To Latiff, sketching is not merely sketching but more of a spiritual, emotional, and intellectual experience of capturing the atmosphere. In Latiff Mohidin’s own words, “A sketch is not really to catch the floating moment, but the atmosphere. not only what is there but also what isn’t there.” This sketch “Wetlands” makes up part of the study of what would be Latiff Mohidin’s Wetlands series. Movements have always played an essential role in Yusof Ghani’s works. From the rhythm of the Tari Series, to the flight of the Biring, and the grace of Seger-ak, Yusof Ghani has always captured the energy and of movements and emulated it on canvas. In his recent series, ombak,Yusof Ghani chose to replicate the toughest movement yet, that of nature. as enigmatic as always, ombak is a series of an artist going back to his roots. The avid traveler who has tirelessly traveled the world look-ing for inspirations, Yusof has looked closer to home for the inspiration of this series, having been brought up near the sea.

a series consisting of three parts, ombak captures Yusof Ghani’s personal journey. The series starts off with red, a period of disaster, pain, and misery, to a more contemplative period with cerebral colours such as white, and ends with a redemptive period of blue. for ombak series, Yusof has gone full abstract, on and relied solely on his strokes and emotions to dictate what would become the series. nyaman with its layers of predominately red and blue suggests itself a transitional period for Yusof. one that contains some of the pain and misery in his life while suggesting that redemption will soon take after. With nyaman, Yusof Ghani suggests no signs of slowing down as he continues to enrich the Malaysian art culture.

Yusof Ghani’s successful art journey began when he graduated with a Bachelor in fine arts from the George Mason University, Virginia, USa in 1981. he then obtained his Masters in fine arts from then Catholic University of america, Washington DC, USa in 1983. Yusof ’s works are stroke-based renditions is known for his strong lines and spontaneous marks on dynamic compositions. his hallmark series Tari, and subsequent series Protest, Topeng I, II, III, Wayang, hijau, Segerak, and Wajah are highly sought after making Yusof Ghani one of the leaders in abstract expressionism in Malaysia. Yusof Ghani began work for his Topeng Series after his visit to Sarawak where the cer-emonial masks used by ethnic Kayan and Kenyah inspired him. Drawn by their mythical powers, the Kayan and Kenyah tribes used masks for everything from worshiping the Gods, curing illnesses, and spiritual cleansing. To Yusof Ghani, the masks were not only a cultural statement but it also repre-sented the façade in which he set about on a journey to unmask himself. Dark, strong colours are coupled with Yusof ’s bold strokes gives the masks a dark cynical look which despite its horror, is meant to reflect Yusof Ghani’s attitude towards the Kenyah’s masks where the more grotesque the masks, the more potent its powers to cure and protect.

Staying true to his philosophy, awang Damit uses the canvas not only for aesthetics, but to deliver a strong message. Ikon Semudra II represents the shape found in front of boats. As his father was a fisherman and his mother a housewife, braving the rough seas was never an option, it was a necessity. and during the rough seas, it was often the Ikon Semudra which stood between a safe return or a cap-sized boat as can be seen with curving blue strokes, suggesting the impending waves. awang Damit reminds us that challenges will always lay ahead and we should never run from it but face it as the Ikon Semudra does.

awang Damit is one of the most recognized abstract expressionists in Ma-laysia. he graduated with honours from Mara Institute of Technology (UiTM) in fine arts in 1983 and was awarded the Best Student award that year. he then obtained his Masters in fine arts with the Catholic University of america, Washington D.C. in 1988. awang belongs to the second generation abstract expressionists in modern Malaysian art and has been lauded for his series Marista (2002) and Iraga (2011). In 1992, a work from his eoC series titled farmer’s Song clinched the Painting Prize at the coveted 3rd Salon Malaysia and he also received honourable Mention at the 1994 and 1995 Philip Morris Malaysia art awards. awang has held various exhibitions both in groups as well as solo including the Intipati Budaya – Satu Sintesis show at the Shenns fine art, Singapore (1994), and Bentuk and Makna by Galeri Seni fSSR, UiTM (2000). awang Damit has held positions as the Curator of the art Gallery and head of the fine arts Department before being appointed an associate Professor in 2000.

Untitled I can be viewed from many perspectives where each one yielding different results, a goal set out by Ibrahim hussein the moment he picked up the graphic pen. his untimely demise may have robbed Malaysia of one of its greatest artist, but Ibrahim hussein’s work still continues to amaze us.

Dato’ Ibrahim hussein received his formal art training at the nanyang academy of fine arts in Singapore in 1956 and moved to London in 1959 where he studied at the Byam Shaw School of art, where he was the top student for 3 consecutive years. Widayat studied at the Indonesian fine art academy (aSRI), Yogyakarta, where he became known as a lecturer of the Indonesian Institute of fine arts (ISI) Yogyakarta as well as a prominent artist. Since 1950 to 2002, Widayat participated in numerous art exhibitions in Indonesia as well as internationally, in countries such as Singapore, Thailand, Japan, hong Kong, netherlands, Italy, United States, and australia. Widayat is said to be a maestro after affandi, as published in the book “educator and Painter” by ISI Yogyakarta in 1988. Widayat was also a revolutionary artist, and master of gardening and graphics arts. Widayat was the first artist whose exhibition was largely exhibited in the Singapore art Museum, one of the most important museums in Southeast asia on September 2007 and it was held for the duration of two months. according to Prof. Soedarso Sp Ma, Widayat’s artistic works can be levelled with the works of henri Rousseau (a france surrealist artist) who has been his great inspiration.Widayat paints freely, and is unburdened by anything except that he always attempts to infuse contents, giving significance to his imaginary space by means of symbols and indications. Looking at Widayat’s works, we are taken to the archaic nature and to the daily life, without perspective, and without criticism for something. We may remark them as beautiful and alluring, crowding our retinas, innocently accepting reality, fascinatingly interpretable, and mystically thrilling space.

In 2002 Raduan was awarded the Pahang State foundation Scholarship for his and Masters in fine art (painting) from the University of Wolverhampton, UK and in 2007 was once again the recipient of the state scholarship for his Masters in fine art (printmaking) from the Camberwell School of art, UK. Raduan Man laboriously incorporates both art disciplines for his works by intricately carving out wood blocks and transposing the images on to canvas. The use of canvas as oppose to paper gives Raduan a sturdier material to work with, enabling him the room for experimentation to form the artistic statement which has shaped him today. Layers of blocks are imprinted, with each block contributing its unique characteristic which gives depth and complexities to Raduan’s work. Raduan has participated in over 30 group exhibitions and has held 7 solo exhibitions including fresh Markings, nn Gallery, Kuala Lumpur (2003), Beyond Print – Raduan Man, Gallery Chandran, Kuala Lumpur (2009), and Living Metals, Purple houz fine arts, Petaling Jaya (2012).

every piece by awang Damit has its own narrative. observations and lessons which he has gained in life are conveyed on the canvas as reminders for the future. for Iraga “Garut dan Belatak”, awang Damit looks back to a time of poverty. Born in Poland, Stanislaw Kors graduated with a Masters in fine arts from the academy of fine arts, Wroclaw, Poland in 1967. Growing up during the communist rule of Poland, Stanislaw soon branched away from his peers with his branch of art, one he calls intra-realism. Intra-Realism is a mix between super realism and abstract. Stanislaw’s art are non-representational abstract creations of great amorphous shapes suspended and exploding in space. having been brought up during World War II, Stanislaw immersed himself into his subconscious mind as he seeks to disassociate himself from the cruelty of men for inspiration. The surreal paintings painted with the delicate technicities of super realism were the results of Stanislaw’s soul searching for a greater universe.

Stanislaw Kors participated in over 20 group exhibitions and 30 solo exhibitions internationally. he has participated in the Polish Contemporary art, Dusseldorf, West Germany (1976), South african association of arts, West Gallery, Pretoria, South africa (1984), and ex-Chiesa delgi Scolopi, Castiglion fiorentino, Italy (1998) and held solo exhibitions in venues such as the ambassador Galleries, new York, USa (1997), fiore Internationale de Paris, france (1975), and Galeri Petronas, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia (1995) to showcase his branch of intra-realism art. Born in 1945, Kelantan. Chuah Seow Keng is recognized as one of Malaysia’s leading artists and is very well known for his batik and watercolour paintings. In 1968 he was awarded a scholarship to study at the Suddeutsche KunststoffZentrum in Wurzburg, Germany. While attending this academy he specialized in fiberglass sculpture, a difficult, but rewarding art medium. While being recognized as an accomplished sculptor, Seow Keng is also acknowledged as a masterful batik artist. his abilities as an artist were noticed at a very early age. he was exposed to the art of batik painting by his father Dato’ Chuah Thean Teng, who pioneered batik painting as a fine art form. Seow Keng excels in this intricate art technique and was chosen to demonstrate his batik skills at the International freundschaftheim in Buckeburg, Germany. During 1974 Germany’s Television Channel Zweites-Deutsches fernsehen-Trans-Tel made a documentary film of Seow Keng and his brothers who demonstrated the art of batik painting for German viewers. Seow Keng returned to Malaysia after completing his studies in Germany. Soon thereafter, in 1970, the Malaysian Singapore airline (M.S.a.) commissioned him to do a fibre-glass relief sculpture entitled “Space” for their lpoh office. The following year M.S.A. commissioned another fibre-glass sculpture entitled “Time & Space” for its Penang office. Seow Keng also created the “Bank Crest”, a fiberglass sculpture commissioned by the Bank Negara of Malaysia and that sculpture is currently being displayed at the entrance of the Bank Negara in Penang. Another fiberglass sculpture entitled “CoMPoSITIon” is on permanent display at the Yahong art Gallery in Penang, Malaysia. This batik painting harvesting depict a charm and fabric of rural life. Seow Keng has brought the liveliness into the painting. Its’ content, the use of warm colours and its composition offer a long lost scene from the past. here, ladies are depicted with wide hips and ample bosoms – a common symbol of fertility, strength and nursing capabilities. It is one of the key characteristic of the Chuah’s artistic inheritance.

The Food Chain depicts the natural order, not in its gory, sadistic sense of survival of the fittest, but with a lighter, blissful take so commonly associated with the father of Batik Painting, Dato’ Chuah Thean Teng. Light pestle colours of green, pink, and grey are used for this painting where the smallest fish lay comfortably in the bigger and they both have the unfortunate position of being supper for the cat. The cat, of course, being on top of the food chain is depicted having a nap, contented with having fed and being on top of the chain. Dato’ Chuah’s use of pestle and charming figures gives the painting a sense of harmony and acceptance of what is otherwise a cruel reality.

In 2007, as part of the aBn-aMRo and Wawasan open University, Teguh had a brief stay as a resident artist in Malaysia.
