Delighted with the development, the northside councillor, Kathleen Leddin has congratulated Limerick City Council on developing such an attractive amenity for the city but in a letter to the council’s director of services, Caroline Curley she points out that while many dog owners and their pets are enjoying the walk, it would be a useful addition if dog litter bins were installed on the boardwalk. “I’ve been asked by many of my constituents to bring the matter to your attention - there are numerous walkers, joggers and tourists availing of the Clancy Strand boardwalk and the O’Callaghan Strand riverside walk every day.. “It would be a very useful addition to the boardwalk amenity if dog litter bins were provided so that the owner could dispose of the foul left by their pets in a hygienic and tidy way,” she states. In her letter to Ms Curley, Cllr Leddin recommends locating the bins along Clancy and O’Callaghan Strands between the Treaty Stone and St Michael’s Rowing Club, which, she says, would encourage dog owners to use and would “greatly enhance the amenity for all. “Such bins are commonplace in other countries and a quick search on the internet shows many useful examples.” The councillor enclosed an image of one such bin and is recommending to the council that it be considered for the boardwalk and riverside walk. She has also identified a local manufacturer who has expressed interest in the project. Cllr Leddin is awaiting Ms Curley’s reply. LIMERICK city dogs and their owners have taken like a duck to water to the new boardwalk, running from the Treaty Stone along the river bank by the Curragower Falls and on to the Robert Byrne Park on Clancy Strand.

“Such bins are commonplace in other countries and a quick search on the internet shows many useful examples.”

The councillor enclosed an image of one such bin and is recommending to the council that it be considered for the boardwalk and riverside walk. She has also identified a local manufacturer who has expressed interest in the project.

Cllr Leddin is awaiting Ms Curley’s reply.
