Seasonal Yoga Teacher – linking the energy of nature to the body. Small friendly classes to suit all ages and abilities. Busy Beacon Hill mum, Emma Higginson, couldn’t have imagined how successful her business networking idea would be when she launched it five years ago. Set up to get the word out about her decorated cakes business, Yours Tastefully, Emma’s Facebook group, Business Mums Networking Tastefully (BMNT), took off like a rocket the moment it was set up. “So many local networking groups met in the early evening,” she said. “Which was just when my husband was coming home from work, and I was putting the children to bed. As a busy mum, it just wasn’t accessible for me. So one evening I set up the Facebook page. By the end of that week, 300 mums had joined. By the end of that first month I had 4-500 signed up; all local women, mums working from home or running their own businesses.” It started just in the Haslemere area but then quickly expanded to cover Farnham and Petersfield. The page is used every day by hundreds of mums, all asking questions, giving advice and generally supporting each other, as women so often do. Many of them have become good friends through the group. “There are no egos,” said Emma. “It’s very supportive. It’s just women helping out other women.” This feeling of support is echoed by the many members (now around 700) of BMNT. Andie Wyatt set up Horses of the Wild, clothing for ‘tweens’, a year ago. An experienced clothing designer, having worked for many large brands including Fat Face, she wanted the chance to go it alone, seeing a gap in the market. Her collection of ethically-sourced, natural fabric clothing is for girls who “love dancing to their favourite playlist as much as cartwheeling across open spaces.” Andie said: “For our first collection we have printed indigo-dyed and tie-dyed cotton jersey, cotton voiles, naturally cooling crepe and super light denim.” The company is based in Grayswood “and fuses quirky British aesthetics with the crafting of expertise of india to create a unique look,” offering wholesale opportunities and and selling direct from the e-commerce site. BMNT has been very supportive, she said: “We are all just mums trying to do what we’re passionate about, while juggling house and children.” Angela Thompson from Thursley tries to fit work around her four sons. She used to work advising small businesses but needed something that would fit in with family life. She now runs an online jewellery business, but her main business and passion is yoga. “I used to live in LA and had an amazing yoga teacher there, who was 84 years old,” she said. “Once the boys were old enough, I decided to go on a training course and learn to be a yoga teacher. I also practise EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique) and I’m learning reiki. I am currently taking a therapeutic gentle yoga training course as I have found myself working more and more with people with health- or age-related conditions that really benefit from gentle yoga and relaxation. “BMNT has helped directly i.e. providing new clients, but it’s mainly a support network for me,” she said. “It can be lonely working for yourself so it’s nice knowing there are others out there if you need them. For example, the other day I was looking for a venue for an osteoporosis yoga workshop that I am holding on June 13th and immediately up popped suggestions. I found a lovely quirky little venue in someone’s garden that I would never have found otherwise.” Architect Sarah Baillieu is director of her own practice in Headley. The business deals with everything from residential projects to new build and refurbishments, extensions, conservation and listed buildings. “I’ve engineered the business to fit round family life,” she says. Her office is at home but kept separate. “I have employees working in the office, and everyone seem to respect the division.” She has three children. “I kept the business running quite small until the youngest was in reception class,” she said. She has found BMNT very useful. “You’re networking with like-minded people. I trust the people in the group to be reliable and honest. They’re all professional mums, doing a good job for a fair price. It’s wonderful. In fact, a lot more business is done between women now. I’d say, ten to fifteen years ago, my clients were nearly all male. Now women are much more involved. They’ve gained confidence and realised they’re perfectly capable.” Sarah Baillieu Krissy Taylor Angela Thompson Kate Renninson business Mothers of Solene Schuiteman said: “I consider myself a very lucky person because I love what I do. I have a corporate background which ended when I became mother of twins nine years ago. Long commutes, working in the City of London did not feel right with raising babies. Working from home in Haslemere was the obvious choice. I first used my marketing and admin skills as a ‘virtual office assistant’ but then discovered the aloe vera based products of Forever Living. I was exhausted and battling with weight issues. The changes were incredible and I found myself recommending them with great success.” Solene is also a reiki master, getting very positive feedback from the women at the most recent BMNT meeting. With her new business, inbalance4life - formerly known as Everyday Aloe Vera - she offers healing reiki treatments whilst carrying on sharing the benefits of Forever’s aloe. She said: “The BMNT has been a brilliant platform to advertise and to meet other entrepreneurial mums. We exchange services and also tips, develop friendships and partnerships. It’s a fantastic network to be part of!” The Lannoy School of Performing Arts is a dance and performing arts school run by local mums Danni Lannoy and Natalie Stewart. Danni has a background as a professional dancer and teacher and has performed in shows such as ‘Lord of the Dance’ with Michael Flatley plus multiple West End shows and US tours. Following a break to have two children, Danni and Natalie decided to pair up to create a young, dynamic performing arts school with a friendly and welcoming atmosphere and a passion for all things performance. Having started with just eight children, the school has grown significantly since 2012 and now teaches around 300 children and adults each week at both at Lannoy School (based in Hindhead and Grayshott) and at Churcher’s College Junior School and Tormead School for Girls. Natalie has a corporate background and runs the business side of things - she also happens to be Danni’s sister-in-law. Danni said: “The school now teaches Ballet, Tap, Modern, Musical Theatre (LAMDA) and Streetdance to children and adults (the adult streetdance classes have proved very popular with local mums!). Since the beginning, BMNT has been instrumental in spreading the word locally about the school and many of our clients have come to us via the BMNT Facebook page. Much like the ethos of BMNT, we strongly believe in the power of mums as capable and successful businesswomen who can succeed at anything they put their minds to.” Natasha Brittan is an experienced mindfulness teacher based in Haslemere, teaching mindfulness- based stress reduction courses (MBSR) to adults, teenagers and children. “Mindfulness is the cultivation of skills that reduce stress, develop greater focused attention and concentration, thereby increasing our capacity to effectively manage life complexities,” she said. Natasha’s clients vary from corporate, to those living with cancer, and children/teens who are increasingly feeling the effects of life pressures such as exam, social media and self-image. She runs Mindfulness4Ninjas children’s courses in Haslemere and workshops in schools for children and teenagers. She has two teenagers herself and being self-employed allows her to be there for her children and do what she loves - making a difference. “Emma’s positive energy in BMNT inspires and encourages this wonderful business community. Since I joined, BMNT has been so supportive, I have met wonderful friends, lovely clients and their children too,” she said. YogaBellies is a franchise launched by Anna Lewis in Haslemere and the surrounding areas two years ago – different classes are available every day. Anna said: “We are truly passionate about supporting women and that is just what YogaBellies classes are all about - providing yoga, education and support to empower women at all different stages of their lives whether that is during pregnancy, post-natally with baby or yoga for women. We are often so busy in our lives and yoga provides us with space to relax, to breathe, connect with ourselves and to build strong and healthy bodies. BMNT has been an incredible help in launching my business. It is a huge group of supportive business women and we all help each other with our businesses and marketing. It has meant I have been able to network and get to know people so much more easily.” Kate Renninson runs Molly Moocow, offering educational musical fun and movement classes for children. Kate said: “I am a married mum of three who started working for Leigh Fisher (founder of Molly Moocow) when my third child was small, nearly ten years ago and I have just taken over the business. I am very grateful to Leigh for giving me this opportunity and trusting me to carry on such a fantastic small local business that she has developed and nurtured for 13 years. And I feel lucky to have a job that I love and that fits in around my husband and three children. “I have recently had my car wrapped to look like a cow which my children aren’t too impressed with but my Molly Moocow children love it! “I have known Emma since the beginning of BMNT and love the fact that there is support and help available when you need it from lots of ladies all in the same boat.” Krissy Taylor set up children’s clothing shop Dandy Urchins in Churt three years ago, and now runs it full-time, with help from her mum Sue. Just over the road from the village school, she supplies a range of quality clothing for children, as well as educational toys and games, and gifts. She sells items made by other local businesspeople, and provides a base for hairdresser Becky Clarke to offer Friday and Saturday afternoon hair appointments for children. “I love it,” she said. “I do everything: stock control, buying… but it’s so rewarding and the balance with family life is critical.” She said BMNT has been invaluable for getting information and advice on all sorts of business- and mum-related subjects. A local mum photographer did her photoshoot for her for a catalogue. “I love working with other mums - we can relate to each other, chat about kids, and they give you essential feedback. And the children (she has three) are involved, too. My daughter Daisy likes to help choose clothing and my eldest son wants to come in and work in the shop.” Lisa Nugent is an a Self Esteem Coach for children, a Business Coach, has a Diploma in mindfulness, a member of the Godalming Teen Summit, business Professional and mother of three children. I am passionate about empowering young people to exceed their own expectations, to achieve goals and create a positive environment in which to live. I also run workshops in schools, which are fun, exciting and creative. Whether it is designing a “I am Brilliant” box, creating a “Who am I “ canvas, working on friendship qualities or playing games to highlight peer pressure, or relational aggression, the children walk away with powerful messages and creations that they can keep and use in order to reinforce what they have discovered.
