Crumpfizzely Costumes

The Early Years and Junior Schools kick-started the new academic year by celebrating Roald Dahl Day this week. Each class thought up gloriumptious ways to celebrate and learn more about this famous author and his stories. The children looked fantastic in their costumes and a swizzfiggling day was had by all.

The winners of the Crazy Character Competition were rewarded with a special Bruce Bogtrotter Chocolate Cake. Congratulations to Lily Butt and Alice Bratt! Have a look at the website news pages for more spiffbuzzing pictures!

Year 2 Kitchen Visit Year 2 recently delivered their freshly dug up onions from the Early Years garden to Miss Wiltshire in the school kitchen who kindly used them in her delicious beef and vegetable stew for lunch that day.

Miss Wiltshire then gave everyone a tour of the kitchens and the children were fascinated by the size of the dishwasher. What a lot of dirty dishes we produce at Clifton High!

Saturday 8th September saw exciting hockey and netball matches against alumni teams at Coombe Dingle. The players fought it out in sweltering heat and it was great to see so many former pupils again and with such a fantastic level of skill and fitness too.

The hockey was very physical and the match could have gone either way but the ‘old’ girls managed 4 goals in the last 30 minutes to win 6-1.

The netball saw a strong, talented team of old girls ranging in age from 19 to 29 and an eager young school team. CHS fought admirably but the more experienced alumni won 33-10.

There are many talented players at CHS and a lot of potential in our current teams this year. They all played exceptionally well and we look forward to a very successful season for hockey and netball.

Sporting stories - Alumni matches and the Challenge Shield

The CHS 1st hockey team played again on Monday 17th September to draw for the ‘Challenge Shield’. This annual match between Clifton High and Royal High has been a long standing tradition and a successful event since 1918 when Major Steel had two daughters, one at Clifton High and the other at Royal High and donated a trophy for an annual match between the two schools his daughters were studying at. CHS played their best game of the season so far, displaying great attacking skills and fitness. The match was very physical with many goal scoring opportunities. With a draw of 1-1, CHS have maintained possession of the shield for another year!

Below: the alumni (in purple) and current (in black) netball teams prepare for a good-natured match.

Year 12 students visited inspiring exhibitions at the Royal West of England Academy including “Unnatural - Natural History”, an artistic exploration of an alternative world where the dominant species are not human and natural objects are metamorphosed into unnatural forms. The artwork provided ideal inspiration for the students’ new projects, making observational drawings from animal specimens to create a display for the science block, showing the links between art and science. “Unnatural – Natural History” is on until 23rd September and is well worth a visit.

Year 13 Art and Textiles students took part in master classes in fashion illustration, trends and styling and early photographic techniques such as Cyanotype and Physionotrace at Cardiff School of Creative & Cultural Industries (University of Glamorgan). Classes were run by undergraduate departments so it was a great opportunity to get a flavour of Higher Education in specialist areas.

Year 7 Bonding Trip Year 7 came back from their bonding trip full of stories about their experiences. The highlights seemed to be the challenges they faced, trying new things, being supported by friends, encouraging each other and getting to know new people.

Favourite activities included caving (“probably the coolest thing I have ever done”), climbing, mountain bicycling, canoeing (“the most fund I’ve had in ages!”) and the night walk under a starry sky.

Look out on the website for a full report of the trip together with lots more pictures and comments from the pupils who went along.

Parents of students in Year 13 should please note the following Clifton High deadlines for UCAS applications:

1st October (to be ready for UCAS’ own deadline of 15th October) for students applying to the Universities of Oxford or Cambridge or to any university for a course in medicine, dentistry or veterinary medicine/science.

30th November (in good time for UCAS’ own deadline of 15th January) for all other courses.

Year 13 Futures and Skills lessons this half term will focus on UCAS and other university topics such as funding.

Parents are also welcome to make appointments; if you would like help or advice with any related issues, please do not hesitate to contact Mrs Giles:
