Getting started with GIS Career

GIS career is developed to help you find the needed courses you should attend to enhance

your skills at the job you are working. It shows you the needed knowledge to be acquired to

move on in advancing and developing your career path. Starting from GIS end user till GIS

consultant positions you can find your way with different jobs and careers.

As one of our most unique services, we offer training programs designed to meet the needs

of anyone interested in developing a career in the field of GIS in Egypt and the MENA region.

The programs are divided into 13 different GIS career paths, based on the varying GIS tasks

for each role. We’ve selected & developed a series of courses that cover the different

knowledge, skills, and qualifications required for each career path. Some of the career paths

1. GIS End User

Job Responsibilities o GIS end users (knowledge workers) produce a highly presentable GIS maps based on

applications that are built and deployed by GIS developer.

o GIS end users work with the GIS application to work on a variety of daily tasks.

o Use the core GIS software ArcGIS with its basic capabilitiesmaps that are used to serve a variety of purposes.

o They read and interpret maps; manipulate, understand and manage data entered into a GIS database.

o Create and use Geodatabase components that maintain data integrity and prevent errors during data creation and editing in addition to solving common spatial data alignment problems.

This is the fundamental course given to all categories. It is the only block given to the End

Users. It aims at finding a common language between all trainees regardless of their various

experiences and backgrounds. This facilitates the transmission of knowledge between the

categories. So, the results could be summarized in the following points:

1. Giving all the trainees the basic theoretical GIS knowledge required for any GIS user.

2. Being able to differentiate between the different data formats of Esri.

3. Creating a common language between all the trainees using the discussed GIS

terminologies

4. Using the core GIS software ArcGIS with its basic capabilities.

5. Having the ability to imagine what is behind.

2. GIS Surveyor Job Responsibilities

o Observing, receiving, and otherwise obtaining information from all relevant datasources.

o Processing Information -- Compiling, coding, categorizing, calculating, tabulating, auditing, or verifying information or data.

This block is mainly targeting the category of spatial data engineers. It tries to give the

required theoretical background in dealing with different data collection sources. Data

collection is accomplished through a group of practical applications on the most recently and

efficiently used software and hardware. So, the skills the trainee will gain could be

summarized as follows:

1. Having the necessary theoretical background required for a data collector and

producer.

2. Having the ability to deal with the most frequently used software and hardware in the

field of field survey.

3. Being able to deal with raster sources of data either it is from photogrammetry or

4. Supervising the surveyors work.

5. Gaining the required skills for differentiating various types of images and choose the

most suitable according to work needs.

6. Putting the suitable work plan for his team either indoors of office or outdoors.

On-The-Job Training Setup: The trainees will use GPS devices for the practical survey of a

neighboring area the surveyed area will be inserted into the Survey Analyst to be

processed. The trainees will also use local images to practice georeferencing.

Prerequisites:

o Surveying background.

o Basic computer knowledge.

o Familiar with windows operation system.

o Completing the Foundation Track.

3. GIS Data Specialist Job Responsibilities

o Check, prepare and load source data.

o Use a variety of automation techniques required for making quality control on data.

o Use a variety of Map production editing techniques.

o Analyzing, collecting, storing and creating GIS data.

o Testing data to ensure its integrity.

o Compiling and presenting data on maps; helping in the upper management decision making process.

o The GIS data specialist is also expected to act as a consultant for others who utilize the GIS data contained in the geographic information systems.

This course aims at building the trainee’s knowledge of producing maps starting from the

advanced editing techniques used in producing spatial data to passing by the techniques

required for making quality control on data. Besides, it will teach the trainees the advanced

techniques used in map cartography and layout production.

On-The-Job Training Setup: As a pilot training the trainees will define the requirements

of their data production process. They will use the ArcGIS suite for implementing that

editing techniques, and they will produce data, apply editing techniques and QA/QC

methods.

4. GIS Cartographer Job Responsibilities

o Apply a standard cartographic workflow to efficiently and effectively create maps using ArcGIS.

o Apply basic cartographic design principles.

o Create maps that are easy to interpret and properly designed for the audience and delivery medium

o Balance cartographic theory and principles to deliver effective maps

o Researching, selecting and evaluating map source data for use in the preparation or revision of maps and charts to various scales.

5. GIS Analyst Job Responsibilities

o Envision, design, and develop new software functionality.

o Write comprehensive technical documentation on software tools and GIS methods.

o Enhance product quality by creating, reviewing, and executing high quality test plans.

o Analyze, assist with, and drive customer issues.

o Participate with management and development teams on planning for future releases.

o Produces a variety of high quality geographic and demographic materials for marketing purposes.

o Uses well Geographic Information Systems (GIS) fundamental concepts, practices and procedures; with an emphasis on analytical work.

o Supports the activities of GIS Specialist including support for analytical mapping jobs for production; provides support and assistance for extra workload as needed.

This block is only targeting the GIS analyst. It tries to give him the required theoretical

background for a GIS analysis including the methodologies of GIS analysis. Besides, it

introduces a group of tools that could be helpful for the analyst. It illustrates ArcGIS

Extensions for different usages. So, the results of this course could be summarized as follows

1- Teaching the analyst the methodological methods for GIS analysis

2- Documenting the work and making reports.

On-The-Job Training Setup: The trainees will learn to analyze a sample model and create

sub-models of the original one. Analysis will be made on the sub-models and specialized

tools will be used to represent that model and find an optimum design and analysis of

that model.

6. GIS Database Designer Job Responsibilities

o Building the spatial sense for the database designer.

o Dealing with spatial data in several types of database software.

o Awareness of CASE tools and modeling

o Basic understanding of software design techniques including object-oriented analysis and design (OOAD) techniques using the Unified Modeling Language (UML).

o Ability to use the CASE tools for modeling a local database.

o Apply Esri design methodology and best practices to develop appropriate solutions and technology strategies that address business workflows and technical requirements with special focus on the geodatabase

o Review existing ArcGIS-based enterprise systems and provide recommendations, considerations, and improvements in systems design, application technology, operational performance, system administration, and technology migration

o Perform enterprise software installation, configuration, and performance tuning services

This course helps the targeted trainee gain the basic skills required for a database designing.

It teaches him how to design Geodatabase. Beside that the user is taught how to administrate

Geodatabases created using RDBMS.

7. GIS Database Administrator Job Responsibilities

o Responsible for database administration tasks over one or more of various RDBMS.

o Installing the Database software & creating a database instance.

o Managing the database instance & Database storage structure managing users &

schema objects.

o Export & Import Data including the GIS data

o Database Backup & Recovery & manage versioning

o Managing Database Replication

o Performing database performance tuning and table indexing

o Handling DB crashes and problems by learning the suitable tabs and techniques for

9. GIS Desktop Developer Job Responsibilities o Responsible for taking documented software requirements and software design model

and developing various applications, systems and products using different technologies like JAVA & .NET with minimum technical supervision required.

users. This advanced Phase shows how to customize and extend ArcGIS applications by

building custom COM components. Students learn the fundamentals of the application

develop a type of Case study or Pilot Study to employ all what they learned.

10. GIS Web/Enterprise Developer Job Responsibilities

o Design, develop, and maintain public-facing Web mapping sites and applications

through concept, design, and implementation phases.

o Work with existing design templates to maintain corporate branding and image

including implementation of specified standards.

o Ensure cross-browser, cross-platform integrity of Web designs.

o Maintain knowledge of current trends in Web application development.

ArcGIS Server provides a set of software components and a framework for developing

centrally managed GIS applications. This advanced phase introduces the ASP.NET Web

Application Developer Framework (ADF) and teaches how to build custom ArcGIS Server

applications. Students learn about the available libraries, application programming interfaces

(API), and server development guidelines, and how to develop different types of Web

applications. Students build applications ranging from ASP.NET Web applications that use the

This block is Local course dedicated to Managers in GIS Units delivers a useful background on

GIS data gathering and the GIS Organizations work and what they produce. Also it extends to

GIS project Management phases in daily activities for GIS projects.

On-The-Job Training: By completing the on-job training, managers will be able to manage the

GIS work, day to day operations, and follow up the project sub-tasks. Managers will be

familiar with Microsoft Project as part of managerial and operational follow up. They will be

able to easily choose different products that will satisfy different projects.

o Promote and align Esri’s technology platform within customer organizations.

o Identify and plan for customers’ business and technical goals.

o Serve as a trusted advisor and advocate for Esri customers.
