6 Aabir Singh Baoni - Profile 10
Jitendra Baoni
“In My work of art I create images that symbolizes liberty and represent freedom from the physical restrictions of the earthly mundane life
Born in the princely state of Rewa, Madhya Pradesh in India, Jitendra Singh Baoni is an artist deeply concerned for society. He expresses his concern not only through art but also through active blogging and working as an academician in various disciplines. Working as a freelance artist, Baoni did his masters in graphic art from MSU Baroda.
His artists’ residency in Berkely, San Francisco was a great opportunity for him to create wonderful lithographs and exhibit in San Francisco where he got a good feedback from contemporary graphic artists.
Most of Baoni’s work is a direct result of his reflections with the turbulence that happens in the everyday world today. “In everyday news you find people dying as a result of terrorism, communal riots, missing people and suffering without food and shelter. Therefore my artworks reflect images that symbolize freedom from the everyday shackles of the system.” The artist through his art wants to depict a world free from human restrictions and suffering. He quotes Rabindranath Tagore: “Where the mind is without fear and the head is held high.” His work is not about the urban or the rural, but about a certain section of the society which the world actively chooses to turn a blind eye. His landscape is full of elements like birds, books, flying figures denoting that education has not been able to bring the desired freedom that every individual pursues in life. Baoni feels that art is the only medium which is devoid of any restrictions. “A lot has changed in art in India in the last 15 years and it is possible to explore and experiment a lot today with different medium and materials. It is a continuous learning process.”
Baoni had his first solo exhibition at the Baroda Fine Arts Faculty in 1992 and also has had numerous shows since then in India and abroad, including those held at Berkeley, San Francisco US in 2003, Private viewing in Chicago, US in 2003 and the Nehru Centre London in 2003. His most recent solo show was at Kala Art, Berkeley, San Francisco in 2007, where he attended a residency program. He has held several solo and group exhibitions around the globe. Baoni has been actively participating as a speaker and lecturer at academic institutions including the National Institute of Fashion Design, Delhi. He is also interested in sculpture and recently made a concrete sculpture 14feet high for a corporate building in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, India. Jitendra Baoni lives and works in Baroda as a freelance painter.
Baoni, has held various art workshops with street children organized by SAHMAT, and also with University students at APIED, Vidyanagar , Fine Arts Faculty,Vadodara, MRID, Vadodara. He has been a regular faculty with NIFT Delhi for a year and also held design workshops at various design colleges.
