What to Look for in Today’s Matches by Matt Lombardi Noon: Laura Massaro (England, age 35, rank 7) vs. Yathreb Adel (Egypt, age 22, rank 20). Over the years Massaro, a former world champion and world no. 1, has kept up with the competition by adding more attacking play to her classic English style. Adel’s own multifaceted game marks her as one of the young Egyptians most likely to break through to the top 10. She beat Massaro in their last match, at November’s Hong Kong Open. 12:45: Paul Coll (New Zealand, age 26, rank 7) vs. Saurav Ghosal (India, age 32, rank 12). Both of these speedsters combine patient play with exceptional retrieving skills. The result is likely to be long rallies, punctuated by some highlight-reel dives. This is their first-ever meeting on the PSA tour. 2:00: Omar Mosaad (Egypt, age 30, rank 17) vs. Greg Lobban (Scotland, age 26, rank 31). Lobban has taken full advantage of a fortuitous draw that’s gotten him to the final 16 without having to play a higher-ranked opponent. That changes today. The powerful Mosaad, nicknamed the Hammer of Thor, is coming off an impressive second-round win over world no. 6 Miguel Rodriguez. 2:45: Tesni Evans (Wales, age 26, rank 10) vs. Millie Tomlinson (England, age 26, rank 25). The tenacious, deceptively athletic Evans entered the top 10 in 2018 on the strength of wins over Laura Massaro and Joelle King (twice). Tomlinson, a Yale grad, lost a tight five-game match to Evans last month in Monte Carlo. 5:00: Tarek Momen (Egypt, age 30, rank 4) vs. Gregoire Marche (France, age 28, rank 32). Marche is nicknamed the Acrobat, but the title fits Momen as well—both players are fast, nimble risk-takers. Expect an entertaining match with spectacular winners and retrievals, along with a few groan-inducing tins when high-risk shots go astray. 5:45: Ali Farag (Egypt, age 26, rank 2) vs. Daryl Selby (England, age 36, rank 19). Selby is a classic wily veteran who likes to exploit small advantages and keep his opponent off balance. It will be a tough trick to pull off against Farag, the reigning Egyptian national champion and one of the most agile players in the game. 7:30: Amanda Sobhy (U.S., age 25, rank 11) vs. Danielle Letourneau (Canada, age 25, rank 39). A year after returning from a ruptured Achilles heel, Sobhy has firmly reestablished herself as the top talent in American squash and a threat to win any tour event. Letourneau is the third-ranked Canadian woman but knocked off her country’s no. 1, Sam Cornett, in the first round. 8:15: Nour El Sherbini (Egypt, age 23, rank 2) vs. Hania El Hammamy (Egypt, age 18, rank 17). At age 23, El Sherbini has already won two world titles and spent 31 months at no. 1 in the world rankings. She’s an old pro compared to El Hammamy, who’s already reached the top 20 despite still having a season left of junior play. 9:00: Nour El Tayeb (Egypt, age 25, rank 3) vs. Lisa Aitken (Scotland, age 28, rank 54). A bout of dengue fever kept Aitken out of squash from 2015 through 2017, but she’s mounting an impressive comeback—in December she won two Challenger tournaments and was named PSA Player of the Month. She’ll have a giant test in the quick, creative El Tayeb, last year’s ToC finalist and, like her husband Ali Farag, the Egyptian national champion.
