Chairman’s CornerAnother month in the book and a rough one it has been for several of our members. We hope that everything will work out and at some future date everyone will be able to look back on the flooding with thanks that the worst was the loss of things and that no person was lost.

One of our members who was flooded is Harvey K. He says his camp is a mess.I know that April is a busy month for the Chapter. We have the  Athens Big-fork cleanup the 8 - 10th and the following week is the spring All Society Mtg near  Little Rock.

Most of us have enjoyed the hospitality of Harvs Camp at one time or another while canoeing. That being said, perhaps Harv could set a work day at some point and we could all give him a hand [ if he hasn’t done it all by himself ] .

So, hidden in the above blather are two of the trips for April. The others are the Grand Canyon Float , most likely full by this time,  and the  Earth Day Paddle on Caddo Lake on the 30th. This event is sponsored by the East Texas Master Naturalists and there will be a cost associated with it. I believe it is $17.00

Hope to see everyone there. I have to see ya since I can’t hear ya.

A permanent secretary would be appreciated! However, Louis Covington said after this month, he’ll be here more. IDF Fund: After much discussion about what to do with the funds, Karen Pitts said the contract stated if we no longer needed the funds for instructors, the money was to go into the chapter general funds. Harvey Kennedy moved the IDF funds be moved into the general funds. Steve Eyler seconded. The motion carried. Boat rental: David Pitts reported that BCOS, the Ozark Society Little Rock, and the Ozark Foundation all invested money to purchase those boats. Total cost was $4,000, with BCOS paying $2,000, OS and the OS Foundation contributing the balance. A discussion ensued on what to do with the boats. Karen suggested a proposal be written up and put in the newsletter so all can read it before voting on this issue. The discussion was tabled until a proposal could be written up. PAST OUTINGS NEW BUSINESS Steve Eyler brought up Harvey’s camp on Jeems Bayou was flooded. When the water recedes, and Harvey is ready, many of us can go out there and help him clean up, and gather his belongings that may have floated away. UPCOMING OUTINGS March 19-20: EVENT CANCELLED Sandy Roerig reported the water on the Black Bayou near Monroe is too high, and the refuge is closed. Along with the information in last month’s newsletter about what they do, here is a short recap of their presentation at our meeting. Jeremy Haas talked about what kinds of knives are legal to carry in Louisiana. Open carry (holstered) of guns is legal in LA. And he spoke of some differences between open and concealed carry. One point: How

will you feel if you actually took someone’s life? Be honest with yourself before you actually pull that trigger. That has to be the only option you have to warrant shooting. Google LRS Self Defense legal force, deadly force for more info. Jim Banks talked about taking care of wounds in the wilderness.1- Stop the bleeding. Tourniquets are wonderful for outer extremity wounds.    For body holes: stuff the wound with gauze, then cover with rubber to prevent air from getting in.2 - Immobilize with a triangle bandage, etc.3 - Deal with shock - use space blankets to keep warm.4 - Call 911 immediatelyThe aim is to slow the progression of the wound. If you have something that impedes you, do not remove it.Two Local Hikes from Pack and Paddle.com

Driskill Mountain (also referred to as Mount Driskill) is the highest natural summit in Louisiana with an elevation of 535 feet above sea level. The hike to the top is almost disappointingly short and easy – but it is great to have summited the high point of your home state.

Once on top – an interesting activity is to sign the register located at the kiosk and then read through to see all the people that have made the trip to the top. You’ll find names from all over the US. These are “Highpointers” who are trying to climb all (or as many as possible) the high points in each state.

The Saline Bayou Hiking Trail is located along the Saline Bayou National Scenic River Corridor beginning just south of Cloud Crossing Recreation Area and ending at Pearfield Launch Site Area. This 3 mile hike follows the beautiful Saline bayou as it snakes its way through central Louisiana. - See more at: http://packpaddle.com/where-to-go/hiking-backpacking/saline-bayou-trail/#sthash.Z3pxHDxj.dpuf
