Northview Elementary School Pre-K Newsletter Jan.25-Feb.8, 2018 Reminders/Announcements Please be sure to place all money sent to school in an envelope marked with your child’s name, the amount of the money you are sending, and the purpose for the funds. Please check your child’s backpack and folder daily for important information and their Daily Commitment Calendar. Please make sure your child has an extra set of clothes (shirt, pants, socks, and underwear). Please make sure that your child’s name is labeled inside all of their clothes. Please update your child’s extra clothing to winter clothes. IMPORTANT DATES: *Friday, January 26- two hour early dismissal for students/ professional development for teachers *Friday,February 9-School will be open because it will be a snow make- up day Theme 5 : Stories and Rhymes We are beginning week 3: The first week focuses Nursery Rhymes . The focus is on letters Aa, Bb, Cc, dd, Ee, Ff The second week focuses on Traditional Tales The focus is on letters Gg, Hh, Ii, Jj, Kk, Ll The third week focuses on Fairy Tales The focus is on letters Mm, Nn, Oo, Pp, Qq, Rr Suggestions to do at HOME Practice identifying the letters of their names Have your child count to 40. When you feel overwhelmed or your child does, remind each other to use one of the Calming Strategies we have learned: S. T. A. R. (Smile . Take a deep breath . And . Relax.), The Balloon, Belly Breathing, The Drain, Pretzel, Eye Rest, and Inhale Exhale. Do the calming strategy you choose 3 times in order to fully feel calm. Encourage your child to write their first name, capitalizing the first letter in the name and writing the remaining letters in lowercase. Help your child use the correct pencil grip. Read to your child every night. Have your child make a commitment at the beginning of each day. Give examples of what they can do throughout the day to keep that commitment. If your child is not keeping their commitment during the day, please stop them and remind them of their commitment and the importance of keeping it. At the end of the day, review examples of when they kept their commitment and a plan for tomorrow for the times they did not keep their commitment. Our commitments in February is courage. What are ways you can show courage? You and your child can go to your local Public Library and check out books and educational games and videos for free. Each month for the rest of the school year we will focus on Character Education. For the month of February, we are focusing on Courage. Discuss with your child the definition of courage. Discuss with your child examples of courageous people in history. Reading/Language Arts Language Arts: Identify the letters in their name. Identify and write the letters: Mm, Nn, Oo, Pp, Qq, Rr. Comprehension: Use a combination of drawing and developmentally appropriate writing to share an opinion about an experience or book. Identify the characters, settings, and events in stories. Identify what happened at the beginning of the story, the middle of the story, and the end of the story. Retell a familiar story. Tell how the illustrations support the story. Confirm understanding of text read-aloud and information presented orally. Phonics: -Identify the letter sound at the beginning of a word. -Identify the letter sound at the end of a word. -Identify the letters in their first name. -Identify the letters Mm, Nn, Oo, Pp, Qq, Rr. -Identify the sound each letter makes. -Identify words that begin with each letter sound. Language and Literacy: Use letter-like shapes, symbols, letters, and words to convey meaning Understand and use question words such as who, what, when, where, why, and how. Speaking and listening: - Follow agreed upon rules for discussions ( listening to others and taking turns, speaking about the topics and texts being discussed ) - Speak audibly and express thoughts, feelings, and ideas clearly. - Speak using complete sentences. - Focus on details in the illustrations and text. - Ask and answer questions in order to seek help, get information, or clarify something that is not understood. Math: -Describe and compare measurable attributes. -Sort objects into given categories and self-selected categories. -Identify the attribute by which the objects were sorted.

Suggestions to do at HOME
