SPRING IS HERE!!!

Listening to the birds chirp, the peepers come up and watching everything grow. It is like a new beginning.

It is time for elections of officers for the 2018 PPA Board, at our Spring meeting in Pittsburgh, a new beginning.

Serving as a board member requires very little time. Typically, we meet three times a year, usually in January, August and October. The meetings are held in Altoona, which is the most central area for Pennsylvania. The meetings are held on a Saturday from 11:00 AM till 300 PM. Board members are reimbursed up to $150.00 for travel expenses. We also have our general membership meetings which are held at the spring and fall congresses.

This issue includes an over all of the board positions responsibilities. Exposure to new thoughts and ideas may trigger a shift in the way you think which may result in achieving effective results for

advancing your career and the practice you work in. If you are not ready to hold a board position there are committees ie: Education, Girl Scout Patch, Library, Membership and Monitor Committees. If you are interested in any position please contact any current board member.

I have served on the board for several years in various positions. It has given me a great since of accomplishment, not to mention the wonderful friends that I have made.

Please join us in Pittsburgh for the great education that is planned. PPA will also be recognizing the Para of the Year and the new award the Young Para of the year Saturday evening along with the POA awards.

Looking forward to seeing you in Pittsburgh.

Yours in Optometry/Paraoptometry,

Vera J Kohler CPOA

Explained is HOW corrective lenses actually work to restore proper vision to patients affected by these conditions. Included in this comprehensive overview are: Physical properties that impact prescription lenses: Lens curvature, Index of refraction, Specific gravity (and more), as well as Properties which effect visual performance: Aspheric design, Abbe value (chromatic aberration), Light transmittance (and more).

immediately into practice when they return to work. The program begins with best frame selection techniques, centering primarily around which types and sizes of frames are most appropriate for which types of patient prescriptions – including hyperopic, myopic and presbyopic considerations. From there, the presenter will work participants through: Standard Bench Alignment (Pantoscopic, Face Form and Temple angles), Trouble-shooting Misaligned Frames (Bridge Xing, Variant Planes, Skewed Bridges, Temple Spread, Temple Fold Angle and Equalizing Pantoscopic Tilt), Customized Fitting and Adjustments (Bridge and Nose Pad alignments, proper Temple and Ear Piece curvature to match patient feature and Commonly Needed Frame Repairs (custom tailored review of items requested by the audience).

There have been no Packets sent out for the Girl Scout Awareness Patch. Fifteen patches have been sent out. I will be following up with the leaders to find out when they anticipate giving their troops the patches. Testimonial

Is customer service important to the success of your practice? Does it free your time to see patients if your staff can discuss the details of lens options, design, and blue light? Are your patients happier and more likely to return if your staff can discuss the details of vision and insurance plans at the time the appointment is made, when the patient arrives, and as they order eyewear at check out. Would you agree that being a good doctor is not enough? We need a well-trained staff to be successful in practice, to improve our efficiency to treat more patients, and to get home on time at the end of the work day to spend time with family and friends, or just unwind.

So, how do you train your staff? Yes, we have a training manual. Yes, we utilize online trainings, and lens experts to talk to our staff. But I find nothing can replace the live training that can be found at conferences, like the POA Congress.

Please support your staff by funding their education at the Congress. If you cannot send all your staff every year, then rotate who attends, so everyone can benefit from this education, comradery and break from the office. Not only does my staff learn valuable information, they meet other paras, so if they have question later, they have a network of people to call.

I know I owe my practice success to my exceptional staff. They understand that they perform a professional duty. They understand that I rely on them. They understand that what they do is more important than just a nine to five job.

So, please, let your staff know that you value their work and you want to support them. Send them to the Pennsylvania Paraoptometric Association Education. Encourage them to sit on a Pennsylvania Paraoptometric Committee or the board. Then watch as they grow into a staff that makes your patients return and makes you the best doctor you can be.

Girl Scouting offers a variety of opportunities and challenges. With this in mind, the Pennsylvania Paraoptometric Association would like to offer the Girl Scouts the opportunity to earn a Vision Awareness Patch, which has been approved by the Girl Scout Council. PPA is an association committed to promoting the quality of eye care. We believe the activities required for the girls to earn the patch will make them more aware of the importance of vision and good vision care. The girl’s efforts may even spark an interest in Optometry or related fields. The patches are $1.00 each. If the troop is interested in the Vision Awareness Patch, please call Cindy Whitman @814-366-2095 or fax your request to (814) 368-5855Attn: Cindy.
