Mrs. Williamson began our meeting with a prayer honoring St. Teresa of Jesus, whose Feast Day is Oct. 15. St. Teresa was a Carmelite Nun who founded convents in the 1500s. This prayer was used by students in the ACTS Class for morning prayer. Students in this class write most of their prayers based on formulas given to them by their teacher. Matt Martorelli ’03 has been hired as an Academic Advisor in our Academic Support Program. Mr. Martorelli is working with students to help them set goals, learn organizational skills, and interact with their teachers. Study hall will be mandatory at least once a week.

Renovation of the Advancement and Admissions offices is complete, which will help to ensure better efficiency in both departments. Jane Leary is still looking for phonathon volunteers; if interested, please call her directly.

The Catholic Youth Spectacular was another big success. More than 3,000 students enjoyed the day of fun activities at Quassy Amusement Park on Oct. 14, as well as a special Mass celebrated by Archbishop Mansell.

The Hospitality Committee requested additional volunteers for Open House on Nov. 7. The Entrance Exam was given on Sat., Dec. 1 at 8am. We are asked to help to pass the word of NWC on to other students and families.

The Saturday Night Live committee also requested volunteers. In its 24th year, the event was held on Nov. 17 (see update on page 4).

The remainder of the evening was set aside for a presentation by HealthSouth. Athletic trainers Shaina Krauss and Stacey Ciarleglio, from NWC and Hall High, spoke about sports health and injury care. Northwest Catholic students and parents are encouraged to tap the expertise of Shaina, our in-house Athletic Trainer, at any time. Please call the school office to learn how to contact her directly.

At the Nov. 20 meeting of the Parents’ Club, West Hartford Police Lt. Don Melanson and Bernard Feeney, a U.S. Postal Inspector, gave a very informative presentation about Internet safety to a small group of parents.

Attendance Reminder: Absent Students May NotParticipate in After-School Activities

All students must be in attendance during the school day and attend class in order to be eligible to attend after-school activities. This applies to all practices, rehearsals, set building, meetings, awards presentations etc. Students must report to school by 11 am to be eligible to participate in after-school activities. If a student is too ill to be in school, then the student is too ill to participate in other activities. Please note: Special circumstances (such as funerals and college visits) are usually exempt from this rule, as long as the school is aware of the matter. This makes communication from parents or guardians regarding tardies and absences even more crucial. Please remember to call the school attendance mail box (236-4221, press 1) as soon as you can so we know where the students are.

A Christmas gift to the Northwest Catholic community: a new and improved web site

Under the guidance of Finalsite (our new web site company) and Laurie Kramer Murphy ’81 (our very able account manager there), www.northwestcatholic.org was born just a few days before the Christmas break. Switching to this new vendor means that control of the content is in our hands, instead of a third party’s. The result? The web site will now have updated and accurate information and photos, and is intended to serve as a worthy companion to the other chief resource for parents: Edline. Please let us know how you like it! (Contact Michelle Murphy, [email protected].)

Northwest Catholic to Host “Relay for Life” in June 2008

We are delighted to announce that the West Hartford “Relay for Life,” supporting the American Cancer Society, will be held this year at Northwest Catholic. Beginning at 4pm on Friday, June 13 and ending at 10am on Saturday, June 14, the Relay is sure to attract hundreds of people from many different fundraising teams who will walk our track to raise money for cancer research. Kaela Paternoster ’09 is the coordinator of the Northwest Catholic team; for more information, contact Kaela at [email protected], or visit http://main.acsevents.org/rflctwesthartford. Please become part of this great opportunity to display the legendary Northwest Catholic hospitality while supporting an excellent cause at the same time!

Calling All Frustrated Parents …

Are you appalled by the way your teenagers speak to you – especially becauseyou would never have spoken to your own parents that way?

Are you reassured (but skeptical) when people tell you that your kidsare much more polite outside your home?

Good news!

Best-selling author Anthony Wolf, Ph.D. (Get Out of My Life, But First Could You Drive Me and Cheryl to the Mall?) says that teenagers’ “outside” personality – their more civilized side – is actually a much better indicator of who they will eventually become. But can you survive as a family until then?

Come and hear Tony Wolf share his insights on the mystery of adolescence at the next Parents’ Club meeting on Tuesday, Jan. 22. In addition to explaining that it’s normal for teenagers to develop a temporary allergy to their parents, he’ll also offer some useful (and NOT useful) ways of dealing with today’s teenagers. Admission is free. (The business portion of the meeting will begin at 7pm; Dr. Wolf’s talk will begin at 7:30pm.) Don’t miss it! Bring a friend!

Saturday Night Live a Huge Success! The receipts have been tallied. The bills have been paid. And the profits are incredible! Co-Chairs Carol Ciotto and Gail Riley are delighted to announce that the 24th Annual Saturday Night Live netted a profit of $37,600!! Many, many thanks to all the parents, alumni parents, alums, faculty, and staff who bought tickets, donated items, baked desserts, set up, served, or cleaned up at the big event – as usual, this was a real team effort, and this success is truly the success of all. Mark your calendars: Next year’s Saturday Night Live -- the 25th anniversary edition! -- will be held on Saturday, Nov. 22, 2008. Plans are already in the works to mark this Silver Jubilee in grand style. Stay tuned!

It’s That Time Already: Course Selection for 2008-09Course selection is a very important process; it should be accomplished in consultation with parents, teachers, and guidance counselors. This year, the process will begin on January 23, 2008.

During assemblies that day, guidance counselors will explain the scheduling process, distribute the Program of Studies book and Student Course Request sheets, and remain available for any questions. From Jan. 23-25, students will have teachers recommend and approve their classes by signing their Course Request sheets. Students should take the Program of Studies book home and confer with their parents; over the weekend of Jan. 26-27, they should bring their Course Request sheets home for their parents to sign.

To complete the process, students must enter their course selections for 2008-09 through Edline between Jan. 28 and Feb. 1, 2008. (This process will be explained in school, and directions will be posted on Edline.) Sheets must be returned to homeroom teachers by February 1, 2008.

Counselors and Academic Departments will review selections after the data have been entered. Note: Everyone involved with the course selection process -- students, teachers, and parents -- must sign the Student Course Request sheet.Jan. 23 Assemblies for explanationJan. 23–25 Teachers recommend classes/sign sheetsJan. 26–27 Parents sign sheetsJan. 28-Feb. 1 Students complete selection through EdlineFeb. 1 Signed sheet due to homeroom teacher

It is important for students to consider an entire academic year during the course selection process. The transition from grade to grade involves an increased work load and more difficult concepts. Higher-level classes, honors courses, Advanced Placement work, and leadership roles in the arts and athletics all require more time and effort.

It is important to carefully consider the courses before committing to a schedule for the year. Students may not drop or change a course unless an exceptional situation exists. This status will be determined by the Academic Dean, after consultation with the student’s guidance counselor and teacher. A written note from a parent is also required.

A student who withdraws from a class after 12 class days into a course (yearlong or semester) will receive the grade of “W.” A student who withdraws after completing more than half the course will receive a final grade of “WP” (Withdrawn Passing) or “WF” (Withdrawn Failing). No credit will be given for the course.

*Students are to report to their second period exam room each day at 10 AM. The exam will begin at 10:10 and finish at 11:40.

During exams, students must be in complete uniform. There is no homeroom period; students report directly to their exam rooms. They should remain in the room (even if finished with the exam) until the bell rings for the end of the exam period, or until dismissal is given from the office at the end of the exam period. Students need to report to school only for exam periods. If there is no exam scheduled, there is no need to report to school. Students who may be in the building during a scheduled exam time and do not have an exam must go to the cafeteria or the library and remain there. (Please note that the food service will be available until 10:00 am.) Out of consideration for those taking exams, students may not go to lockers or remain in the corridors during the exam periods. Buses will leave at 12:08 PM. Please remember that exams will not be graded for student whose tuition and fees are not paid.

The Northwest Catholic High School grading system utilizes quarter grades, examination grades, semester averages and final grades. All of these grades will be shown on the report card. Semester averages will include 40% of each of the quarter grades and 20% of the exam grade. Final averages in yearlong courses will be comprised of 20% of each quarter’s grade and 10% of each exam. It is important to be aware of the impact of each marking period and the examination on the semester average.

Health Notes from Marilyn Adamo, RN

Now that cold and flu season has arrived, please take a moment to review some policies from the Health Office. State of Connecticut Laws or standing orders from the West Hartford Non-Public School Director, Dr. Neil Stein, dictate most of these policies. Also, please note that good hygiene in the form of frequent hand washing and covering the cough or sneeze are the keys to staying healthy. Adequate sleep, good nutrition and increased fluid intake help as well.

A licensed practitioner must prescribe all medications that a child takes at school, including over-the-counter medications such as cough syrups, allergy pills, etc. The school nurse is not allowed to accept a medication from a parent alone, with the exception of the pink Tylenol/Ibuprofen form that the parent may sign as it is a standing order from Dr. Stein. Tylenol and Ibuprofen are stocked in the Health Office and can be given as long as there is a signed pink form on file from the child’s parent. All prescription medication should be brought to the nurse’s office in the original pharmacy container with a permission form signed by the parent and the practitioner before it can be administered. It will save you time and insure that this regulation is met if you obtain an authorization form from the nurse (one was mailed this summer) and take it with you to the doctor. Your pharmacy will give you an extra container if the medication needs to be taken at school. If a medication is to be given twice a day, please give the first dose before your child leaves for school and the second dose in the evening at home. Likewise if a medication is to be given three times a day, please administer the first dose at home before school; the second dose can be administered when a child arrives home from school, and the third dose administered at home before bedtime.

To ensure the good health of all of our students, please keep students at home for at least 24 hours after illnesses that include vomiting or fever. Students who become ill at school need to be picked up within an hour of when you are notified.

A note from your child’s practitioner is required to excuse or re-admit a student to physical education programs when an injury is involved.

Please advise the nurse of any change in your child’s health, including new diagnoses, medication taken both at home and school, surgeries, fractures, communicable disease or any social or emotional issues. Students can be very sensitive to many life events that occur in families, and, while they are generally pretty resilient, these life events can affect a child’s health and well-being. Confidentiality is always respected but there are times when, with the parents’ permission, it is important to let a few key people know that there is a problem so we can make accommodations for the student.

Marilyn Adamo, the school nurse, is always happy to speak with parents and can be reached at x123.

Please note:Northwest
