A WORD FROM PASTOR JEFF SILVERNAIL

October Messenger – Pastor Jeff

“For he [Jesus] is our peace; in his flesh he has made both groups into one and has broken down the dividing wall, that is, the hostility between us.

Two times in the last few months I have led a seminar on “Faith and Politics,” first at the Hartwick Summer Institute of Theology and then recently a shortened version for the Hudson Mohawk Ministerium. As such I have thought about and heard lots of discussion about why we are so divided at this time in our nation’s history.

Part of the reason is how we receive information. With a wealth of news and opinion channels and web sites we tend to gravitate to certain ones, usually the ones that confirm our view of the nation, the culture and the world. One of the places I get my news is the Google News Feed. But even if you did that too, we aren’t looking at the same thing. The algorithms will select different stories for each of us depending on our interests.

As such there is a strong tendency for all of us to inhabit an echo chamber. Our biases are confirmed. Contrary opinion and information become less apparent. And it becomes easy to separate into “us” and “them.”

In this environment I find our church communities to be a great gift. For church is the gathering in which we leave our echo chamber and live in community united by Jesus who breaks down the walls between us and becomes for us a bridge bringing us together.

In this new community centered around Jesus we don’t have to agree with one another and yet we can listen to one another. We can learn from one another. We can love one another.

Why? Because Jesus loves us – all of us.

Blessings in Christ,

Pastor Jeff

DID YOU KNOW??

The Lutheran Church is the oldest Protestant tradition. Martin Luther issued the “Disputation of Martin Luther on the Power and Efficacy of Indulgences” that became known as his “95 Theses” in Wittenberg on Oct. 31, 1517. Lutherans went viral nearly 500 years ago!! Martin Luther and his allies used the new media of the day, pamphlets, ballads and woodcuts. They circulated them through social networks to promote their message of the reformation of the church. Following the practice of naming a “heresy” after its leader, the name Lutheran originated as a derogatory term used by Johann Eck during the Leipzig Debate in July 1519.

Martin Luther preferred to describe the reformation as “evangelical,” which is derived from the Greek word meaning “good news.”Lutheran teaching can generally be summed up by “Three Solas”: (1) Grace Alone; (2) Faith Alone; (3) Scripture Alone. The split between the Lutherans and the Roman Catholics began with the Edict of Worms in 1521, which officially excommunicated Luther and all of his followers.Luther’s Small Catechism (“Der Kleine Katechismus”) was published in 1529 for the teaching of children at home by their parents. Luther’s Large Catechism consisted of works addressed particularly to clergymen to aid them in teaching their congregations. The Book of Concord or “Concordia” (1580) contains documents that explain what Lutherans believe. It includes the three creeds of the ancient church and Reformation writings such as Luther’s Small and Large Catechisms, and the Formula of Concord.

  ELECTION DAY LUNCHEON 2018

I know you wonder why this is in the newsletter so early, but we need to start planning so there is not a last minute rush to get things organized. Looking at the calendar, the end of October will be busy with Pantry and Trunk or Treat and November 6th is Election Day.

Again, Carol Gibbs has graciously accepted the task of organizing our pie campaign. Please see her at church or call her at 518-279-1469 and let her know what pies you will have for her.

Dining room staff will also be needed as we know of at least one of our waitresses will not be able to help out and we maybe down a dishwasher. If you volunteer any time for set up or clean up, that would also be appreciated.

We will have take-outs and you may order pints and quarts of chowder to be pick up on Sunday or Election Day. Price of the chowder is $ 9.00 for quarts and $ 4.50 for pints. Please contact the Shanahans at 518-279-9552 to place your order.

WONDER WHAT IS HAPPENING TO YOUR SODA BOTTLE DONATIONS?

Sue Alderman always took care of them. Sue Anthony would like to continue doing it in Sue's memory. They took the money and donated approximately 20 Thanksgiving baskets to Lansingburgh and Tamarac schools. Lisa
