At the end of a challenging week of ‘British weather’, I am delighted to share with you this bumper edition of our Newsletter, full of great examples of the wonderful opportunities open to our students at Bow. This week is also the time for us to welcome our next cohort of students; Year 6 pupils across the country now know which secondary school they will be attending next year and we are pleased to welcome those who will be with us. They have an exciting menu of activities over the next few months which will bring them in to school several times and provide plenty of opportunity for them to meet new friends and to learn their way around the school. Amongst the many events and opportunities running in the school that encourage our students to be ambitious, I am pleased that this Newsletter highlights the work of our young engineers. Participating for the first time in the F1 Challenge, some of our students made a very strong impression in the competition. This is a school–based competition, but extends into University where engineering undergraduates compete against each other on the track at Silverstone in real F1 cars that they build themselves. Our team will now be thinking about what they need to do to get ready to be a part of this. The talent at Bow is certainly being uncovered at the moment.

This edition, once again, celebrates the sporting, artistic and musical talents of our students and the staff that work with them. Bow is increasingly successful in many different sports, has great connections to bring in such talent as that of the Lincoln Jazz musicians to the school, and has exhibitions of our work in public arenas.

I am also really pleased that Bow has been able to be a part of the very important commemoration events surrounding the centenary since the end of World War 1. We have, for some years, been able to send students and staff on prestigious tours of the Battlefields sites and to take part in key international events. This year is no exception and our students and staff

have once more taken part in the preparations for the international events that will be broadcast around the world later this year.

At the end of last half term, the Year 7 Into University cohort took part in their second Workshop which focused on the importance of homework. Led by the volunteers from Into University, the students looked at different approaches to completing homework, including effective planning and adopting a positive mind-set that sees homework as a valuable learning tool, rather than something negative. All of the students were eager and engaged, rising to the challenge of the different activities, and worked very well with the students they did not know.

YEAR 7 INTO UNIVERSITY WORKSHOP MS ELDRID

Just before we broke up for the half term break, all of Year 11 were involved in Head to Head interviews - a full day event that provides each student with the opportunity to have a mock job interview with a local businessperson and receive valuable feedback on their CV and interview technique. A lot of the students were understandably nervous beforehand but rose to the challenge of the interviews. Students said that they received excellent advice and tips from their interviewers that they will be able to apply to the real world when interviewing for jobs or colleges/universities.

At the end of the event, a number of the interviewers spoke really highly of our students and said how impressed they were with their confidence and achievements.

ENGLISH LITERATURE WW1 BATTLEFIELDS TOUR MS KHATUN

”Men marched asleep. Many had lost their boots, but limped on, blood-shod. All went lame;

all blind”

Wilfred Owen

“Overall, I massively enjoyed the experience of meeting new people from different schools as well as learning about the great writers of WW1. This trip allowed

me to have a greater understanding of English Literature as well as WW1

history.”

Jannatul Rashid, 9O

During February half term, four students had the privilege of visiting Belgium and France on a very special centenary WW1 tour. During this four day tour, students were lucky to walk through historical sites and cemeteries remembering the fallen soldiers who sacrificed their lives.

Pupils were given the opportunity of reading, interpreting and critically thinking about the literature written by men and women whose lives changed as a result of the conflict.

This year Bow School entered the F1 in Schools STEM challenge for the first time and competed in the Regional Final on the 9th February. The challenge:

to design and build a model F1 car to be raced down a 20 metre track, propelled by a shot of compressed CO2.

On the day the teams had to present their car (which had to meet many strict regulations) as well as a design and engineering portfolio. They also had to create a pit display and give a verbal presentation.

As this was our first year, we competed in the Entry Class which meant we could not qualify for the National or World Finals, but there were prizes to be won in the Entry Class and Bow School’s team ‘Pink Lightning’ won the Fastest Car Award, Future Stars Award, Portfolio Award and the Pit Display Award.

The ‘Pink Lightning’ team were made up of Muhammad Ibrahim Hye, Toffazul Hussen, Daniel Evans, Ronnie Williams, Yamin Mohammed and Said Hasan.

F1 IN SCHOOLS STEM CHALLENGE MR SPENCE

As well as the team, we invited a group of 14 students to come along to the final so they could experience the day and see how fun and challenging STEM projects can be. All of the students left the event inspired by the incredible work that had been done by other students competing in the Development and Professional Classes with a number of them promising to get involved in the challenge and compete at that level next year.

The following Year 8 students took part in a Hockey tournament against Stepney Green and Sir John Cass Schools. They won in 5 games and lost in 1, resulting in an overall win. They were fantastic and represented the school brilliantly.

Huge congratulations to the team who showed determination mixed with high levels of ability and technique: Bradley Porter, James Holbrook, Arayo La Torre-Cruz, Sultan Sheikh, Lucas Santos, Md Abdus Samad Azad, Adil Islam, Mohammed Amin, Mahir Islam and Sultan Islam

A special mention to Arayo La Torre-Cruz and Sultan Islam - top goal scorers and great team players.

place out of 11 schools (which is a fantastic result considering this was their first ever netball competition). Our Year 8 Netball Team came 2nd, narrowly missing 1st place by one goal.

I am very proud of both teams - they played so well as a team and demonstrated brilliant sportsmanship towards the other teams in the tournament. They have made all of Bow School very proud.

Year 7 Netball Team - 3rd place

Year 8 Netball Team – 2nd place

We excitedly look forward to the Summer Tower Hamlets Netball League, beginning after the Easter Holidays.

On Friday 2nd and Wednesday 7th of February, the Y10 GCSE Art cohort went to The Estorick Collection in Islington. Whilst there, students had the opportunity to explore and celebrate artworks from a range of Italian artists including Gino Severini, Giorgio De Chirico, Giacomo Balla and Umberto Boccioni. All students involved were wonderful ambassadors and will surely take inspiration from the experience.

ART A LEVEL EXHIBITION MILE END PAVILION MS MCEVOY

Thank you to all students, staff and parents who supported us in attending the A Level exhibition at the Pavilion on Thursday night which was hosted by UAL. It was an inspiring night for our students to see the standard of A Level work from other schools but also to help them develop ideas for their own work. It has also, hopefully, shown them that if you are talented and enthusiastic about art there are a number of careers in art and design you can pursue.

On Friday 23/02/18, 30 Year 13, 11 and early GCSE Art entry Year 9 students went to the Tate Modern so that they could look at artists and explore their GCSE controlled test title ‘Fragments’.

The students explored the gallery on their own and returned with drawings and photographs of artists who can help them to develop their own personal ideas in class.

The students’ behaviour was exemplary throughout and we look forward to seeing the artwork that they make as a response.

Equalitynoun-“The state of being equal, especially in status, rights, or opportunities”

During February, we have been celebrating Mother Languages Month, a month where we celebrate, understand and explore the beauty of all the languages spoken by the Bow Community. Students have been learning short sentences in different languages during tutor time, taking part in an exciting flag competition and we also screened “I am Malala” for our Equalities Film Night.

Well done to all those form classes who took part in the competition, and congratulations to 7E for their absolutely amazing WINNING entry!

With their winning flag of Montenegro, displaying the multitude of different languages spoken there.

A very big thank you to our Diversity Ambassadors for creating all the activities for February, judging the competition and for encouraging the rest of the school to embrace diversity.

EQUALITIES @ BOW MS KAMALI

Jazz at Lincoln Centre Youth Band Perform at Bow School On Tuesday 27th February we were exceptionally lucky to have two free performances by one of the finest Youth Jazz Bands from America. The Jazz at Lincoln Centre Youth Band performed two roasting sets to year 7 and 8 in the Waterside Theatre playing big band hits by Duke Ellington and Bill Evans amongst others. The band comprised players from ages 14-18 and were truly phenomenal musicians, drawn from all across the tri-state area in America.

LINCOLN JAZZ MR BOURNE

Their ensemble, skill and star soloists were all world class, and we hope this inspires younger Bow Students to take up saxophone, trombone and trumpet here at Bow School. They are performing at The Barbican this week (where we visited in January) and we wish them all the best on their short UK Tour.
