The additional titles on this list are SUGGESTED summer reading books. If students prefer, they may select their own additional books to read with the help of parents/guardians, school librarians, teachers, and the staff at the public library. The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan After learning that he is the son of a mortal woman and Poseidon, god of the sea, twelve-year-old Percy is sent to a summer camp for demigods like himself, and joins his new friends on a quest to prevent a war between the gods. Among the Hidden by Margaret Peterson Haddix In a future where the Population Police enforce the law limiting a family to only two children, Luke has lived all his twelve years in isolation and fear on his family's farm, until another "third" convinces him that the government is wrong. Dogsong by Gary Paulsen A fourteen-year-old Eskimo boy who feels assailed by the modernity of his life takes a 1400-mile journey by dog sled across ice, tundra, and mountains seeking his own "song" of himself. Freak the Mighty by W. R. Philbrick Eighth grader Max has learning disabilities. His new friend Freak has birth defects that have affected his body but not his brilliant mind. Max and Freak discover that when they combine forces they make a powerful team.
