Third Sunday after Trinity1030 June 17 AD 2018

The Lost Sheep, Henry Ossawa Tanner, 1922

What man of you, if he has lost one of them,

does not leave the ninety-nine … go after the one that is lost, until he finds

it?

And when he has found it, he lays it on his shoulders, rejoicing!

St Luke 15:7

Third Sunday after Trinity Father David is in Chevetogne this weekend. Our service will be led by the Reverend Canon Geoffrey Allen.Opening Hymn: 555 Praise, my soul, the King of heavenThe Collect:O LORD, we beseech you mercifully to hear us; and grant that we, to whom you have given a hearty desire to pray, may by your mighty aid be defended and comforted in all dangers and adversities; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Old Testament Lesson: 2 Chronicles 33.9-13This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.Psalm 55:17-23

17  As for me, I will ’ call upon ’ God : and the ’ Lord ’ shall ’ save me.18  In the evening and morning and at noon-day will I ’ pray and that ’ instantly : and ’ he shall ’ hear my ’ voice.19  It is he that hath delivered my soul in peace from the battle that ’ was a’gainst me : for ’ there were ’ many ’ with me.20  Yea even God that endureth for ever shall hear me and ’ bring them ’ down : for they will not ’ turn nor ’ fear ’ God.21  He laid his hands upon such as be at ’ peace with ’ him : and he ’ brake ’ his ’ covenant.22  The words of his mouth were softer than butter, having ’ war in his ’ heart : his words

were smoother than oil, and yet ’ be they ’ very ’ swords.23  O cast thy burden upon the Lord, and he shall ’ nourish ’ thee : and shall not suffer the ’ righteous to ’ fall for ’ ever.

-2-

Glory be to the Father ’ and to • the ’ Son : and ’ to the ’ Holy ’ Ghost; As it was in the beginning is ’ now and • ever ’ shall be : world without ’ end. A ’ — ’ men.New Testament Lesson: 1 Peter 5:5b-11Clothe yourselves, all of you, with humility towards one another, for “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.”Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you, casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you. Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. Resist him, firm in your faith, knowing that the same kinds of suffering are being experienced by your brotherhood throughout the world. And after you have suffered for a little while, the God of all grace, who has called you to his eternal glory in Christ, will himself restore, confirm, strengthen, and establish you. To him be the dominion for ever and ever. Amen. This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

Gradual Hymn: 385 Be thou, my guardian and my guide

Gospel Acclamation: Alleluia  (4x) Welcome with meekness the im- ’ planted ’ word that has the power to ’ save • your ’ souls. Alleluia  (4x)

The Gospel: St. Luke 15:1-10 Gospel is announced, we respond: Glory to you, O Lord

Now the tax collectors and sinners were all drawing near to hear him. And the Pharisees and the scribes grumbled, saying, “This man receives sinners and eats with them.”

So he told them this parable: “What man of you, having a hundred sheep, if he has lost

one of them, does not leave the ninety-nine in the open country, and go after the one

- 3 -that is lost, until he finds it? And when he has found it, he lays it on his shoulders, rejoicing. And when he comes home, he calls together his friends and his neighbours, saying to them, ‘Rejoice with me, for I have found my sheep that was lost.’ Just so, I tell you, there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who need no repentance.

“Or what woman, having ten silver coins, if she loses one coin, does not light a lamp and sweep the house and seek diligently until she finds it? And when she has found it, she calls together her friends and neighbours, saying, ‘Rejoice with me, for I have found the coin that I had lost.’ Just so, I tell you, there is joy before the angels of God over one sinner who repents.”After the Gospel is read we say: Praise to you, O Christ
