Welcome

Hello and welcome to the ninth Lancaster Jazz Festival. Following on from overwhelming responses from last year we’ve expanded the festival again to bring even more excellent and exciting jazz and contemporary music to Lancaster.

We’re kicking it all off with the Festival Launch at Lancaster Brewery on Wednesday 11, holding another excellent Youth Jazz Night on Thursday 12, and on Friday 13 we’ll be hosting the Jazz North northern line showcase day - adding an extra day of performances in Sun Square - before heading back to Lancaster Brewery in the evening for our first headline performance. Saturday 14 and Sunday 15 are packed out with performances in Sun Square, The Hall and the Storey finishing both days with headline performances at the Dukes.

It’s going to be another great festival and we hope to see you there!

Born out of the snake-pit of Leeds house parties and now released into the wild, Vipertime draw on the mesmeric forms and harmonies of 1970s ethno-jazz. Refracting this influence though post-punk, '60s garage, free jazz and afrobeat they create irrepressible improvised music for the dancefloor. Forming in early 2018 as a free improvising group, the band recorded the ‘All Our Heroes Are Dead’ EP which received widespread radio play.

With a permanent line up featuring members of Roller Trio, World Service Project and Wandering Monster their upcoming debut album finds Vipertime in sharp focus and with lethal intent. Unleashing pounding drums, skittering percussion, snarling bass and impassioned saxophone moving between driving riffs and agile improvisation.

This will be a perfect kick off to this year’s festival.

Nishla’s original songs have a delicate, quirky but deceptively simple air about them – she has a quietly commanding presence and a relaxed but assured delivery that wins over audiences instantly. Her often dreamy and melancholic aura is offset with her energetic and imaginative band of Manchester’s finest young contemporary improvisors.

Formed out of a residency at the Sage Gateshead in 2018, the quintet has played Nishla’s lyrical, story driven tunes at Band

A Jazz Jamaica alumni, Camilla’s love of fusing African and Western Music to make her own unique style is a key reason why she is a firm fixture on the new London Jazz scene alongside peers such as Nubya Garcia and Shabaka Hutchings. Her music is politically minded and heavily linked with African history and slavery in particular. Her latest album looks at tales that slaves passed onto their children through generations and, whilst full of sorrow, is essentially a story of hope for black people and mankind that we can one day live together in harmony.

Forward-thinking UK trio Vula Viel released their second album, ‘Do Not Be Afraid’ earlier in 2019, continuing their singular musical journey centred around the gyil (Ghanaian xylophone).

The band’s set confidently weaves sparse polyrhythms and intricate rhythm structures around bandleader Bex Burch’s gyil lines and take the instrument’s sound into new territory. The gyil and occasional vocal textures are underpinned by the powerful and insistent bass of Ruth Goller (Acoustic Ladyland, Melt Yourself Down, Let Spin) and drummer Dave Smith, introducing a rough, post-punk edge to the band’s sound.

Described as “Ghanaian minimalism”, with the unassuming ability to blur the lines between atmospheres – Vula Viel’s sound may nod to Steve Reichian jazz, but influences don’t

27

stop there: one can hear echoes of Bill Laswell and the irresistible energy of Arthur Russell.

We are very pleased to have this band performing in the intimacy of the Round at the Dukes, this will be one not to miss.

Vicente Magalhães writes music that pays tribute to his Portuguese nationality. Whether he does this by exploring certain indigenous rhythms and traditional chord progressions or by re-arranging and re-imagining old folk tunes the output is a singular one and very under explored. The end result is an intriguing and engaging set of modern jazz pieces that are deeply rooted in Portuguese history and culture. The resulting sound of the band is fresh and full of original ideas and the voice of Raquel Alvaro is really quite special.

Led Bib, known for their boundary stretching rock and jazz, that garnered them a Mercury Prize nomination and a fistful of prestigious awards, set off last year in the hull of a boat in east London, together with lyricists and songwriters to create a suite of songs. Emerging from their underwater session, elements of their groovy, heavy, improvised sound remained but they were now set against fragile vocals and poignant lyrics, taking them into a much gentler song world. The result of the session, is called 'It's Morning' and comes out in September. In the spirit of a classic LP it features two sections of music and at this concert the band will perform and expand upon the album. The

music is very much a journey from start to finish and this will be fully reflected in the live show.

Led Bib have been together for 15 years and have released nine albums to huge critical acclaim. This album promises to bring them to new heights with its mix of the classic 'Led Bib' sound and this new broadening into the world of songs.
