SPECIAL NOTES!

Posters & Handouts

The first important step that we can take in our collective effort to promote our up-coming concerts is to distribute the following promotional materials as widely and as enthusiastically as we can.

Posters ~ Large (11 x 17 full colour)

Available at choir now for you to post in high-traffic public locations. (see below for small ones for lower traffic areas)

Since more exposure is always better than less, picking up posters and posting them as soon as possible would be excellent!

Please think of high traffic locations where you could put your posters (make a list over the weekend?).  If someone else gets one posted in one of your planned locations before you get there, or a planned location is otherwise not available, please look for a suitable alternative. We need to make our posters count by getting them all posted where they are easily noticeable by as many people as possible.

Have your own tape and pins so that you don’t have to leave the poster for someone else to put up (they might not get around to it). Don’t leave a poster behind if the decision maker isn’t available…find out when would be a good time to come back and/or look for another high traffic location to post it.

Please take only as many as you are sure you will put up. You can always get additional ones later.

If you are a member of our extended choir community, but not a current GHC singer, and you feel the urge to post some of these large posters you are welcome to ask a choir friend to pick some up for you, or to drop-in to a GHC session around the 8:30 break time to pick them up for yourself.

  Posters ~ Small (8.5 x 11 full colour)

Available on-line now for you to print

These letter-sized posters are excellent for lower profile residential, work or community posting such as residential, work and community bulletin boards (also your car window, fridge doors, etc.). If you feel the urge, please print and post a couple or three in the places that you frequent.  (cont. in right col…

Basic hand-outs (4-up on 8.5 x 11 black text only)

Available at choir to current members and choir visitors as well as available to the rest of our choir community on-line now (to print, cut and distribute).

Carry some of these hand-outs in your pocket, purse or brief case to give to people whenever the opportunity arises or leave a few copies here and there where people might pick them up and read them. Inserting them in your neighbour’s mail boxes is also an option.

GHC Current Singers Only Section Update

I have added a 2 column word document to the Member Submitted Lyric Sheets list in the Current Singers Only section of the GHC site. There is no section formatting in it just the full lyrics in straight text for all the songs we will be singing. It can be used by any current member to create a full lyric sheet for their section by formatting the text to indicate which words their section sings and which they don't. They can also re-format the text size, the number of columns and the page orientation to suit their needs. Once done it can be shared with your section mates by submitting it for me to add to the list.

Special Note:If you don't have Microsoft Word you can download a free copy of the free (open source) LibreOffice suite. Its Writer program has pretty much all the functionality of Word and can open, edit and save Word documents. In fact the whole LibreOffice suite of programs is a free alternative to Microsoft Office.

Admin Team NotesDenis

It's lovely to see so many listings of sectionals, which are so useful for really getting the concert music into our voices and into our bodies. Many thanks all for your hosting and volunteering!

And a word that Greg Greenway - our concert guest - will also be performing two run-out concerts while he is here.

The first is at the Brentwood Bay Village Empourium on Wednesday Jan.31 starting at 8:00. Info here: https://empourium.ca/events.html Advance tickets essential.

The second is at the Victoria Folk Music Society's weekly coffeehouse evening at Norway House, 110 Hillside, Sunday evening Feb.4. The evening starts at 7:30 with an open stage (where I will also be performing) and Greg's set will start at 9:00.

Both gigs will be well worth it to see Greg in a more intimate setting.

Cathy & Dick

We hope you have had a lovely holiday break, as we have, and we're ready to go, into the homestretch! We each led an enthusiastic sectional rehearsal on Thursday evening - thanks to the altos and tenors who came out, and to Nicole and Sophie for hosting the alto group. Plans are coming along well for the concert, the ticket sales and the posters, and we look forward to seeing you all this coming week!

My Mobile Downsizing Sale

In February my daughter will be boomeranging back home. As a result the storage space available to me for all those things I might use someday is going to be severely limited. So…during these last weeks of the season I will be bringing a selection of goodies each choir night (while they last) and setting up a self-serve sale with 50% of all sales income going to our Honouring Fund in support of The Power of Hope. My intention is to post an overview of what will be on offer each night by noon of that day (latest) so that you can come prepared if something interests you. Current Posting.

My Choir Schedule

I plan on being at all choir nights between now and the concerts and you are, of course, also welcome to contact me with any questions, concerns or feedback at [email protected] or 250-920-4160 (9 to 9 daily).

The Post Holiday Break… “WILL I REMEMBER ANYTHING” …Syndrome

Except for those with “unforgettable” memories, and those who would rather practice than succumb to holiday temptations, we will all (new singers and veterans) probably come back to choir next week with hesitations about how well we remember our concert songs.

The best way to answer that question is to stay off book as much as possible for the rest of the season. As has been said before…that way we will learn what we don’t know so that we can focus on learning that rather than going over and over what we already know. (for more on this see the next item)

SINGING “OFF BOOK”

Most of you know that we sing “off book” in our concerts.

For any new folks who may have missed hearing about that…we do so because when we sing confidently from our hearts in concert, without our books between us and the audience, we maximize both our joy in singing and our audience’s joy in listening!

By now we should be weaning ourselves off our sheet music. As we do so we will enable ourselves to focus on the feel and dynamics of our songs so that we get them solidly into our hearts along with the words and notes.

While we are still learning our songs at this point it is a good idea to put our sheet music down periodically to try singing without it.

By doing so we will:

a) learn what we don't know so that we can focus our memorization efforts on those bits

b) learn our parts more quickly by ear than by staring at the little dots

c) free our eyes to focus on Siobhan & Denis' directing to get the timing and dynamics of each song

d) find that we can often get lyrics we are missing by watching them mouth the words (but sometimes different sections have different words or timing so be careful)

e) most importantly the more we can sing without looking at our book for the words or the notes the more joy we will get from the singing from night to night as well as at the concerts!

The above information is an excerpt from a more detailed document that can be opened by clicking on:

How To Make The Most Of Your Concert Experience.

NOTEWORTHY WORDSA periodic column in which

GHC Tuesday/Thursday Bass Lee McLeodoffers his thoughts on GHC song lyrics

Pete Seeger’s Bequest

In the “shot” voice of his old age, Pete Seeger half sings, half speaks the words of his song “To My Old Brown Earth” in the moving recording distributed when we last sang it a couple of years ago. So I was surprised to find that Seeger wrote the song not in his 90s, but over a half-century ago

after attending the funeral of John T. McManus, co-founder of the radical newspaper, The National Guardian. Seeger later explained that when he sang

at the funeral he regretted that he did not have an appropriate song. So he went home and wrote “To My Old Brown Earth.” (http://www.chimesfreedom.com/2014/01/29/pete-seeger-to-my-old-brown-earth/)

Nevertheless I think we are entitled to view the song as his musical legacy, a sort of living will to humankind.

The form of the song is a bequest:

To my old brown earth, and to my old blue sky,I now give the last few molecules of ‘I’

The words are spoken as death approaches or even from the dead. Seeger gives his body to his “old” blue sky and brown earth. I think ‘old’ here has the connotation of ‘beloved,’ as one would say, ‘old friend.’ But there is no sentimentality here, no vision of an afterlife, simply the releasing of “molecules,” a literal, even scientific, joining with the elements.

What Seeger gives up is ‘I’— consciousness, individuality. There is even a self-deprecating irony in “the last few” molecules: suggesting the feebleness of age and of any one individual’s power.

The present tense of the next line—“And you who sing and you who stand nearby”—implies that Seeger is addressing those still alive when he has died. But surely he is also speaking to, and for, all those who sang with him—took part in the 20th century movements he helped create and lead—civil rights, social justice, the environment. Singing, then, stands for all expression, all human striving for the better.

The legal phrasing of “I do charge you,” echoes that of “I now give” earlier, and reinforces the force of the commands he is about to give from the grave. First,

I do charge you not to cry.

Not to cry because unity with all is natural and right at the end. But also because his message is not one of despair but of hope.

He enjoins us to

Guard well our human chain.Watch well you keep it strong

The human voice joined in harmony, relationship, community is Seeger’s message here, as it was in life.

His egalitarianism, socialism, environmentalism, are important not so much for themselves as for the links they imply (and try to create) between one human and another. I am reminded of Robert Frost’s lines

Earth’s the right place for love:I don’t know where it’s likely to go better. (“Birches”)

We are to keep our human chain strong “as long as sun will shine,” one meaning of which is forever. But is that word “will” not curious here? As if to give volition to the sun, to imply it might sometime cease to shine? And in the 21st century, it is impossible not to think in this context of post-nuclear cloud, of pollution, of the sun blotted out. The volition is actually ours: we will decide how long the sun shines, at least on earth, on “this our home.”

And with this, Seeger shifts to emphasise our environment, his main ‘cause’ in the later years of his life. Though he had described it as old and brown, he now charges us to keep the earth “pure and sweet and green.” For me, a wistful, yet powerful longing for life is present in these simple words.

The next word of the song is “For,” here meaning, ‘because.’ So Seeger ends with the case he’s making, with his ‘argument.’

For now I’m yours, and you are also mine.

Here’s why we should heed his charge. His physical legacy—molecules—and his human legacies, music and social action, are both now ours. He’s literally part of the earth and sky, and they are our responsibility now. But since he is part of the earth, we are also his children. Mythologically, his old blue sky and his old brown earth, are our mother and father. We owe them our being and our care.

Greg Greenway extra concert!

Our concert guest Greg Greenway will be with us the whole week (Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday) prior to the GHC concerts, and he is also doing an extra concert - great for Peninsula people! - on the Wednesday evening.

On Wednesday Jan.31, Greg will be doing a concert in the lovely and intimate setting of the Brentwood Bay Empourium (corner of West Saanich Rd. and Wallace Drive). This is a wonderful opportunity to see Greg in his "native habitat" of a small coffeehouse evening concert. The evening begins at 8:00. Advance tickets are required, as the seating is very limited. I have tickets to sell and they will be available at choir evenings.

They are $20. Tickets are also available at the Empourium. Don't miss this opportunity!
