Airport. Terminal
The dramatic increase in air travel over the last few decades has influenced and
continue to influence airport design, size and operations. Airports differ in the type
of traffic they accommodate, the flight distribution and the way in which passengers
and their luggage are serviced. What airports have in common is their goal to get
passengers and their luggage from and to the plane as efficiently as possible and to
bring passengers’ comfort up to the desired standard.
A terminal is one of the key airport components intended to provide proper
airport operation. It accommodates the following elements: arrivals hall
(“ARRIVALS”), departure lounge (“DEPARTURES”), flight information service,

passport and customs control, check-in desks, baggage reclaim area, airport
security, immigration and health control, airlines offices, etc.
Concourses usually located on the arrival and departure floors, are intended
to accommodate peak passenger flows in case of a sudden influx of arrivals, or a
hold-up of departures. An airport information desk (“INFORMATION”),
airline ticket sales, a tourist bureau and a hotel reservation desk
(“ACCOMMODATION”) usually surround the concourse. Besides in the terminal
at the passengers’ disposal are post and telegraph facilities (including overseas
calls), a lost property office (“LOST AND FOUND”) where the passengers can
find their things lost in the airport or left on the plane, and travel insurance brokers
(in some airports travel insurance may be bought from machines). Nurseries and
children’s play areas are also provided for passengers use at most large airports.
Medical centres (“FIRST AID” or “DOCTORS”) may offer doctor’s
consultation as well as vaccinations; large airports may have operating rooms. At
immigration and health control checks are made for blacklisted people, illegal
immigrants, and necessary vaccination certificates.
The operation centre houses central computer controlling flight information
display units. The flight information boards show flight departure times and gate
numbers as well as flight cancellations.
Airline check-in counters (“CHECK-IN”) on the departure floor process
passengers and their baggage. At the check-in desk passengers’ tickets are verified
and their baggage is weighed. The weight data is input into the computer to ensure
that the aircraft’s total weight and centre of gravity stay within the limits. Here
passengers can check that their luggage has been labeled with the correct code for
the destination airport.
Passport control (“PASSPORTS”) and Customs (“CUSTOMS”) are
necessary only for passengers on international flights. Domestic flights need no
customs procedures but there may be a security check.
The outgoing passengers are required to wait for their flight in departure
lounges which are big enough to hold peak-season crowds. As a rule half an hour
before departure when all formalities are completed the outgoing passengers are
taken to their plane by shuttle buses or they go the gates (“GATES”) leading to
piers, jetties, mobile lounges or air stairs.

The incoming passengers after going through the health, passport and customs
control can pick up their luggage from baggage reclaim area (“BAGGAGE
RECLAIM”), take a bus or a taxi to their destination or rent a car.
Nowadays a large number of airports get profit not only from their aeronautical
operations but also from non-aeronautical activities. Their share in the total income
of foreign airports approaches 40–50 %. Commercially-oriented non-aeronautical
activities include different offices, occupied by airlines and governmental agencies,
aviation fuel supplies, restaurants, bars, shops, souvenir and duty-free shops,
hairdressing / barbershop, hotels, banks and foreign exchange facilities, airline
catering services, taxi services, car rental agencies and automobile parking.

Aerodrome
The aerodrome is a defined area on land or water (including any buildings,
installations and equipment) that is used or intended to be used for the arrival,
departure and surface movement of aircraft.
Aerodromes can be of different size, category and purpose, but all of them
include the following elements:

– Airport land side – that area of an airport and buildings to which the non-
travelling public has free access, sometimes referred to as “public side”.
– Airport air side – the movement area of an airport, adjacent terrain and
buildings thereof, access to which is controlled.
– Terminal airspace – the airspace in which approach control service or
airport traffic control service is provided.
The area of an aerodrome used for take-off and landing consists of the runway,
stopway and clearway. On a land aerodrome there may be one or more runways. The
runway is a defined rectangular area, prepared for the landing and take-off run of
aircraft along its length. Runways are normally numbered in relation to their magnetic
direction rounded off to the nearest 10 degrees, e. g. Runway 18, Runway 06. Two or
more runways at the same airport whose centrelines are parallel are parallel runways.
In addition to runway number, parallel runways are designated as L (left) and R (right)
or, if three parallel runways exist, L (left), C (centre) and R (right).
The stopway is a defined rectangular area at the end of the runway within which
an aircraft can be stopped in the case of an abandoned take-off.
The clearway is a strip of the same width as the runway and an extension of the
runway (and stopway if there is one) which is free of any obstacles. A clearway is
not on the ground, but it is a plane extending into the air from the end of the runway
(not the stopway).
On a land aerodrome there are several taxiways. The taxiway is a defined path
established for the taxiing of aircraft and intended to provide a connection between
one part of the aerodrome and another. There is also a rapid exit taxiway or high
speed taxiway or turnoff (HST) – a taxiway connected to a runway at an acute angle
and designated to allow landing aeroplanes to turn off at higher speeds than are
achieved on other exit taxiways and thereby minimizing runway occupancy times.
On a land aerodrome there is a defined area, intended to accommodate aircraft
for purposes of loading or unloading passengers or cargo, refueling, parking or
maintenance, called the apron or ramp. A designated area on the apron used for
parking an aircraft is an aircraft stand.
On each aerodrome there is a Tower – a terminal facility using air / ground
radiocommunications, visual signaling and other devices to provide ATC services to

aircraft operating in the vicinity of an airport or on the movement area. The Tower
authorizes aircraft to land or take-off at the airport controlled by the Tower. The
Tower may also provide approach control services (radar or non-radar).
All mentioned above structural elements provide aerodrome proper operation.

Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport
Anchorage International Airport (ANC) is a major airport in the U.S. state of
Alaska located four nautical miles southwest of downtown Anchorage (Coordinates
61˚10′28″N 149˚59′47″W). Opened in 1951 as Anchorage International Airport, it
was renamed by the Alaska Legislature to honour former long-standing U.S.
Senator Ted Stevens. However, Anchorage had been a major city for flights
between Alaska and other states for many years. The first scheduled international
flights from Anchorage occurred in 1947 by Northwest Airlines to Tokyo. The
original airport had a primary 8,400 foot east / west runway and a 5,000 foot north /
south runway. In 1957 Scandinavian Airline (SAS) began the first service from
Europe to Asia via Anchorage. Using a DC-7 aircraft, service was initiated between
Copenhagen and Tokyo. Anchorage was a common stopover for passengers flying
to East Asia from 1960’s to the 1980’s because Chinese and Soviet airspace were

off-limits and because the first generation of jets and widebody airliners did not
have the range to fly nonstop across the Pacific Ocean.
In the early 1960’s jet service began in Anchorage with the introduction of the
Boeing 707 and Douglas DC-8. The east / west runway was extended to its present
length of 10,600 feet. In 1965 a new satellite terminal was constructed and 2 years
later it was connected to the main terminal building by a covered concourse. A large
parking area was constructed in 1970 and a second east / west runway (designated
Runway 07R–25L) was constructed. This runway was capable of accommodating
all aircraft in the air carrier system. In 1980 a new north / south runway was
constructed, at a length of 10,496 feet, to ensure that the airport was capable of
meeting all aviation demands well into the next century.
In 1982 a new passenger terminal building appeared. The new facility has eight
gates designed for accommodating and servicing all types of aircraft and is being
used principally as an international facility. In 1985 the State of Alaska constructed
five aircraft refueling pads to meet the rapidly developing international air cargo
market. Also in 1985 a new concourse was constructed on the domestic terminal
building capable of handling three jet and five commuter aircraft simultaneously.
Today Anchorage is served by a number of domestic and international air
carriers connecting the markets of Europe, Asia and North America. For the last 10
years Anchorage International Airport has served about 5 million people and
handled a vast amount of air cargo transported between Asia and Europe. Equipped
with some of the most modern facilities in the world available twenty-four hours a
day, the airport is able to continuously provide aircraft support services, assuring air
carriers reliable on-time operations via Anchorage. Anchorage is also considered as
a future connecting point for air traffic to the Russian Far East. During the summer
season 2008, there was one weekly flight to Russia by Vladivostok Air. Also, there
are plans to add flights to Sakhalin in the near future to meet the demands of U.S.
oil companies.
