Dear Members, Spring is coming to a close and it’s almost time for summer at Hammock Beach. Let me start by wishing all of the moms a very happy Mother’s Day. May brings us lots of exciting and fun family activities. We’re offering plenty of ways to celebrate mom at Hammock Beach – from a Mother’s Day brunch at the Atlantic Grille to Mother’s Day brunch cruise aboard the Sundancer yacht. Don’t forget to treat mom with some much-deserved pampering at the spa.

Hammock Beach will have lots of other exciting activities happening in May. Stop by Loggerheads to watch the Kentucky Derby in style. Don’t forget about Hammock’s Memorial Day weekend activities including a special menu at Loggerheads, a movie on the Champion’s Event Lawn, and more.

For more information about upcoming activities and events at Hammock Beach, please contact Marianne Murphy.

Our public relations team has also been hard at work getting the coverage for Hammock Beach and our sister properties. We are excited to share these great stories about our properties:

D e a r C l u b M e m b e r s :We hope you had an enjoyable Easter holiday season as we turn the corner toward Mother’s Day, the Memorial Holiday weekend and another busy summer season.

The Memorial Holiday weekend marks the beginning of food and beverage service on the beach and the Lodge Pool deck. This will begin Friday, May 22 and offered until Sunday, September 6, the Labor Day weekend. A special lunch menu will be available daily from 11am-4pm, weather permitting, and the 20% member discount will apply.

We just completed another successful Ladies Invitational golf tournament, along with one of our largest ever, Member & Manager’s Receptions. It was good to see the support and great turnout to hear the New Lodge Update from Prem Devadas, President of Salamander Hospitality. A YouTube video on his presentation will be available shortly. As a result of these events and others, we have had many emails from members complimenting our efforts that we would like to share:

“ Just a quick follow up to the member manager last Wednesday. The event on the lawn was perfect! What a way to end the day...the weather and view were perfect, the food was great, the entertainment was fun, and we were surrounded by our friends. Something relatively simple but oh so nice.” —Beth Kelly

“ Thank you for all you did to help make our interclub event so successful and for accommodating the larger number than expected. The food was wonderful and presented beautifully. There was nothing but raves.” —Barbara Johanson

“ Nobody Does It Better should be the theme song for our Invitational. Again a wonderful event and thank you so much for making us members and our guests feel so special. Please share my appreciation with everyone who contributed to make this so extraordinary.” —Linda Hager

“ The event was wonderful. Every year the ladies invitational gets bigger & better!” —Andrea Kelly-Garcia

Please keep the kind compliments as well as the constructive feedback coming.

Happy Mother’s Day to all our Member Mothers!

Warm regards,

Tim Digby General Manager

Advisory Board of Governors Update, by President Bob VanNostrand

It’s been a busy month for your Advisory Board of Governors that started with a special meeting with Prem Devadas, President of Salamander Hotels and Resorts the day after the appeal period for the Flagler County Commission approval vote expired. The Board listened intently, and like many of yourselves, had numerous comments concerning the first wave of projects: renovations of the Hammock House, Spa and Fitness Facilities and Restaurant alterations. The crux of the meeting was that the Lodge project would be an ABOG topic at every meeting, and in addition to providing input, we agreed to keep membership informed through our monthly updates at the Member - Manager meetings and through the monthly columns that I write. We would encourage all members to communicate ideas, suggestions and concerns to any ABOG member - so we can truly represent the thoughts of the entire club membership. If you’ve signed up and attended any recent club events or activities, you’ve likely noticed that attendance is up rather dramatically. We typically see increased attendance during the winter and spring months, based on part time residents who head north for the summer, but this alone does not explain the large increases in our two monthly member functions nor the increased usage of the golf, tennis, fitness and other club facilities. Each month, Marianne Murphy makes a presentation to ABOG titled Club Updates and that includes a total membership count by membership category. It might surprise you, as it did us on ABOG, that total club memberships have not changed much in the past two years:

December 31, 2012 1096 • December 31, 2013 1101 • December 31, 2014 1081

So why if club membership totals are flat are we experiencing significant increases at various club activities and our monthly gatherings being up over 100 since 2014 levels? The answer is that the most common reason for someone dropping their membership is they were not using it enough to continue - many of these membership being held by out of state owners. These memberships have been replaced, in large part, by new members who are living in the immediate area and consistently availing

themselves of what the club has to offer. You’ve all seen the building boom going on around the golf course, the new roofs at the Conservatory - and many of us now count as friends people who bought property years ago but are only now actually retiring here on a full time basis.

So why do I bring this up - because events are filling up faster than ever and our facilities have capacity limits that make it even more important to sign up for events sooner rather than later and risk being placed on a waitlist. Signing up early also carries a responsibility, that is if it turns out you can’t actually make an event, a class or court/tee time, please call and cancel because that’s the only way the waitlist will work properly.

For those of you who are golfers or use any of the facilities at the Conservatory, you’ve noticed the new 24 hour manned security at the main Conservatory gate. The days of zipping past the guard house are over, but the process of clearing security needs to be streamlined and improved. I have met with Tim Digby General Manager of the Club and Pat Maisenbacher, the President of the Conservatory POA to express membership concerns that not recognizing the clubs “Blue Decals” and requiring driver’s licenses and checks of names against daily tee sheets is security overkill. Since then, the process is a little better as guards get to know frequent club visitors - but I will continue to pursue this until access there is as transparent to members as access through the Hammock Beach security gate.

Lastly, many of you attended the April Member Manager meeting where Prem spoke to all attendees about the Lodge project, an approximate timetable, and answered many questions from the audience. The last question concerned the status of lobby negotiations between the Club and Phase 1 Condo Association. I assure you the ABOG has the same level of frustration on this issue as does the membership in attendance at that meeting as was evidenced by the strong reaction to Prem’s statement and while Club Membership is technically not involved in this dispute - we feel as if we have all been held hostage for the past 16 months as this issue drags on. On behalf of the full membership - we call for some definitive action to allow the long overdue lobby renovation to finally move forward.

Drill for Correcting the Over the Top Downswing by Wes Altice, Assistant Golf Professional

An outside to inside swing path is a very common mistake I see in a lot of golfers today. This path leads itself to a two-way miss. The player will either hit a pull or hit the dreaded slice. Players with this type of swing path usually start the downswing with the shoulders and arms instead of turning the body and letting the arms go along for the ride. Below you will find a drill that will help you correct this swing fault.First use a range basket and thread an iron or any other straight object through the spaces in the basket. The iron should be horizontal to the ground with the grip end of the shaft pointing toward you. Next place a ball directly under the end of the iron shaft. See picture below:

Address the ball and begin hitting balls with a half swing making sure you are missing the shaft on the downswing. As you get more comfortable with this you can progress to ¾ swings and then finally full swings. Having the shaft in this position will force you to swing on a shallower plane on the downswing and get rid of your outside to in swing path and start leading to more consistent ball striking.

Below are some images of what the correct swing path will look like:

2015 Ladies Invitationalby Brad Hauer, Director of Golf

This year’s Ladies Invitational was a great success. This year’s invitational committee of Kathy Hodges, Rhonda Miller and Robin Lane helped to make significant successful changes. The event started with the shopping spree that was out of this world. The shopping spree this year was moved to the Atlantic ballroom and Susan Shaw decorated the room with many different types of plants, the room and set up was very well done and the merchandise selections were a hit. After the practice round, the entire field was entertained by a George W. Bush impersonator, who arrived on the Champions Event Lawn by helicopter, much to the amazement of the ladies. George W. Bush” put on a fantastic show and got the evening off to a very festive start. After the show, we conducted our Skills Challenge using our 9 hole putting course at the resort for a putting challenge, the Champions event lawn for Flop Shot and Pitch Shot challenges, while the 18th green held a Chipping Challenge. Our cruise on the Sundancer Thursday night really topped off the week. It was a beautiful evening to cruise the intracoastal and the food was outstanding.

Congratulations to this year’s champions, Jan McMaster and Alice LaFond!!

TENNIS TIP: When on Defense, move Diagonally Kate Lukomskaya, Head Tennis Professional

Many times, we find ourselves chasing a ball down and hitting defensive shots in both singles and doubles. Proper preparation which involves correct positioning can lead you to performing great defensive shots allowing you to stay in the point longer or even turn the point around.

A typical mistake when chasing down a deep shot or a lob, involves the player moving parallel with the baseline. When moving sideways for a deep shot, we rob ourselves of time which prevents us to position properly resulting in loss of balance, not contacting the ball out in front, and a shortened follow through. (WRONG 1-4)

One of the best ways of preparing for a deep shot would be to move on a diagonal away from the baseline. That way we gain more time and are able to set up properly for the shot. By moving diagonally, you position yourself behind the ball which allows you to hit the ball in front of you resulting in a controlled and sometimes offensive shot. (RIGHT 1-4) RIG
