Madeleine McCann disappeared on the evening of Thursday, 3 May 2007.

She was on holiday with her parents and twin siblings in the Algarve region of Portugal.

The British girl went missing from an apartment, in the central area of the resort of Praia da Luz, a few days before her fourth birthday, and has still not been found.

Madeleine's parents, Kate and Gerry McCann, have said that they left the children unsupervised in a ground floor bedroom while they ate at a restaurant about 120 metres

(130 yards) away.

The McCann's originally claimed they found the shutters and window of the children’s room open.

They phoned relatives that night saying: ‘An abductor broke in and took Madeleine’.

But when police and the managers of the complex declared there was no sign of forced entry, they soon changed their story, saying they must have left the patio doors open.

The window had been cleaned the day before.

Only Kate McCann’s fingerprints were found on the window.

More facts The Policia Judiciaria (PJ) initially believed that

Madeleine McCann was dead, that Kate and Gerry McCann were somehow involved and that the body was concealed.

The PJ carried out a reconstruction of the events that

took place on the night that Madeleine McCann disappeared in the hope that it would clarify various contradictions certain witnesses statements.

If they were correct and Maddie was in fact murdered, the McCanns could not have hidden the body alone – which would have meant they had to have had help from a third party.

However notwithstanding the reconstruction it is still unclear what happened exactly on the night.

The other possibility is that she was in fact abducted.

The McCann's friend Jane Tanner insisted she’d seen someone carrying a child close to the McCann's’ apartment at 9.15pm the evening she was reported missing. But she changed her description of this person several times.

Later, one of the McCann's detectives said she might have seen a woman, not a man. She claimed that when she saw this man, she walked past Gerry McCann and a friend, Jez Wilkins. But neither of them could remember seeing her.
