I spent a night out at Wainui Bay with the Year 3 students and counted over 14 awesome parents who were joining in on their child’s camp. Relationships are one of the best outcomes of these events. We all (Teachers, Parents and Students) spend time together and start feeling more comfortable around each other. It is difficult to develop a relationship ‘popping’ into school every now again. If you care about your child’s success at school you must take the time to get to know their teacher, school and friends. This is why we plan camps for Term 1 to provide a relaxed setting to start these relationships. Not so long ago it could be uncomfortable going into a school setting. We really work at this and the feedback suggests we do well in providing a school that is welcoming to parents. Thanks to all the parents that gave up their time. con’t over the page.

Principal’s Korero (con’t from front page)

On Tuesday two Rippa Rugby teams were part of the Far North Rippa Rugby tournament. There were a lot of students from all the local schools. Our students played their hearts out and because of the busy nature of this term had not had a lot of training. They were a very easy group to take out of school, awesome manners and caring of each other. Well done. We also had students compete in the Eastern Zone swimming sports with our students getting in the Top 3 twenty times, Mena and Caitlin in all their events. Impressive work! The Survey that we sent out at the beginning of the term has provided some amazing advice, ideas and directions for the school. The amount of thought that has gone into the feedback is really appreciated and shows how engaged many of our parents are. Lots of comments about Kaitiaki of the Environment, Creativity, Kindness and Outdoor activities which is really exciting. The basics of education are really important (Reading, Writing and Maths) but there are other areas that are important, manners, kindness, environment, creativity and connecting with the outdoors to name a few. I watched our students standing up on paddleboards and kayaking and saw the confidence and skills growing in front of my eyes. All of these things connected together will create a really exciting, challenging and fun learning environment at Mangonui. We now will do the survey with teachers, students and Board members. Once we have got all of the survey’s collected they will be then sent to ‘Sharp Governance’ where they will pick it apart and find trends and patterns. It is really important that ‘we’ (Management) are taken out of the equation as we want to achieve a Vision, Goals and Learning Curriculum that represents the thinking of our community. Board of Trustee elections happen on 3 June. The current Board have only two meetings left before a new Board replaces them. If you are interested in becoming part of the governance team for our school go online to (http://www.trusteeelection.co.nz/). There are some really good resources that explain the basics of becoming a Board member. It is a special position and does involve some time to prepare for meetings so that you are a functional, informed and engaged member. It is not a vast amount but a couple hours before each meeting. Another thing to consider is that the Mangonui School Board should represent our community, Pakeha, Maori, Pacifica, Male, Female, Young, Old, Academic, Sporty, Townie, Rural etc. Times are changing and it would good to see a representation of our unique community on our school Board. Tips for Reading with your children

Page 3: - … that the Mangonui School Board should represent our ... EmmaJane, Lyric, Tatum, Erica, Danielle, Mena, Georgia, Danny, Mena, Patricia, Brooke

1. Choose a quiet time Set aside a quiet time with no distractions. Ten to fifteen minutes is usually long enough. 2. Make reading enjoyable Make reading an enjoyable experience. Sit with your child. Try not to pressurise if he or she is reluctant. If your child loses interest then do something else. 3. Maintain the flow If your child mispronounces a word do not interrupt immediately. Instead allow opportunity for selfcorrection. It is better to tell a child some unknown words to maintain the flow rather than insisting on trying to build them all up from the sounds of the letters. If your child does try to 'sound out' words, encourage the use of letter sounds rather than 'alphabet names'. 4. Be positive If your child says something nearly right to start with that is fine. Don't say 'No. That's wrong,' but 'Let's read it together' and point to the words as you say them. Boost your child's confidence with constant praise for even the smallest achievement. 5. Success is the key Parents anxious for a child to progress can mistakenly give a child a book that is too difficult. This can have the opposite effect to the one they are wanting. Remember 'Nothing succeeds like success'. Until your child has built up his or her confidence, it is better to keep to easier books. Struggling with a book with many unknown words is pointless. Flow is lost, text cannot be understood and children can easily become reluctant readers. 6. Visit the Library Encourage your child to use the public library regularly. 7. Regular practice Try to read with your child on most school days. 'Little and often' is best. Teachers have limited time to help your child with reading. 8. Communicate Your child will most likely have a reading diary from school. Try to communicate regularly with positive comments and any concerns. Your child will then know that you are interested in their progress and that you value reading. 9. Talk about the books There is more to being a good reader than just being able to read the words accurately. Just as important is being able to understand what has been read. Always talk to your child about the book; about the pictures, the characters, how they think the story will end,

Page 4: - … that the Mangonui School Board should represent our ... EmmaJane, Lyric, Tatum, Erica, Danielle, Mena, Georgia, Danny, Mena, Patricia, Brooke

their favourite part. You will then be able to see how well they have understood and you will help them to develop good comprehension skills. 10. Variety is important Remember children need to experience a variety of reading materials eg. picture books, hard backs, comics, magazines, poems, and information books.

Each year Variety provides up to 450 deserving or disadvantaged children with the freedom and independence of their very own bike. Some children have overcome adverse circumstances, in some situations the family is simply not in a position to purchase a bike and in other cases the programme recognises and rewards children who are role models at their school or in their community.
