ServicesBORE HOLE INVESTIGATIONSThe detailed investigation of the sub surface conditions is best
carried out by advancing bore holes in selected locations in
the project site. GEOTECH has the facilities to perform such
drilling work in the overburden and in the bedrock. Extensive
sampling of the soil, on site field tests and monitoring and
observation of the sub surface conditions during drilling adds
to the information that can be provided to the structural
engineer for his designs. Such drilling sampling and laboratory
testing of samples are carried out under strict supervision and
in accordance with the standard codes of practice. In general
the specification and recomendations of BS 1377 are adopted,
while other local and international standards are used as
required by specific projects GEOTECH has the experience and
facilities to carry out both on shore and off shore drilling work,
MACKINTOSH PROBE TESTA simple and economic testing method, to gather preliminary
data on sub surface conditions. Such data may be adequate
for the designs of foundations for lightly loaded structures, as
this provides a very economical method of determining the
thickness of soft deposits such as peat.

surface variation of the flow of current. The information
gathered is of value in prospecting for ground water,
assessing the quality of rock/soil masses, map the interface
between saline and fresh water and similar applications.
PLATE LOADING TESTPlate loading tests are carried out to determine the
bearing capacity of soils. This test is covered by C P
2001:1957, ASTM D 1194-72 and BS 5930:1981.
PULL OUT TESTPile foundations of telecommunication towers, power
transmission line towers and structural elements such as
soil nails or rock anchors which are sometimes used to
stabilize a potentially dangerous soil or rock slope have to
be able to resist tensile forces.
These foundations use the friction developed between
the foundation (or structural element) and the soil/rock
overburden in contact with it as part of the resisting
force. Designs are carried out based on various theoretical
models assuming friction parameters for the soil/rock
overburden to estimate a safe carrying capacity for such
piles or anchors.
Pull out tests are required when it is necessary to confirm
the validity of the design and ensure the safety of the
structure supported by such foundations or structural
elements.
The testing of piles is done as per ASTM Standard D 3689-
90.
The objective of the test is to obtain the required design
parameters using the results of the ‘Load-Displacement’
measurements for both Loading and Unloading Cycles.
THE CONE PENETRATION OR
CONEPENETROMETER TESTThe Cone Penetrometer is a versatile device for in situ soil
testing. Without disturbing the ground, it provides
information about soil type, geotechnical parameters
like shear strength, density, elastic modulus, rates of
consolidation. It is also called the “Dutch Cone Test”. Today,
the CPT is one of the most used and accepted in soil
methods for soil investigation worldwide.
The test method consists of pushing an instrumented
cone, with the tip facing down, into the ground at a
controlled rate. Most modern electronic CPT cones now
also employ a pressure transducer with a filter to gather
pore water pressure data.CPT testing which also gathers
this piezometer data is called CPTU testing.
GROUND WATER TESTING & SURFACE WATER QUALITY TESTINGThe facilities available with GEOTECH for drilling work is
also used to provide specialist services in water supply
projects. In addition to the testing of water quality in bore
holes, special investigations are carried out to monitor
ground water and surface water quality. Several such
investigations have been carried out in Monaragala and
Hambantota districts and in the Republic of Maldives.
RESISTIVITY TESTThe electrical resistivity of soils are required for certain
projects, where the geophysical characteristics are
important ex. power plant projects. The test is conducted
using electrodes driven into the ground to measure the

CROSSHOLE SONIC LOGGING (CSL)Crosshole Sonic Logging (CSL) is a method to verify the
structural integrity of drilled shafts and other concrete
piles. This test is covered by ASTM D 6760-14
The CSL method provides more detailed results than
Pile Integrity Tests (PIT) testing in the determination of
structural soundness of concrete within the drilled shaft
inside of the rebar cage. This method provides little
indication of concrete soundness outside the cage.
CSL requires steel (preferred) or PVC access tubes installed
in the drilled shaft and tied to the rebar cage.
The tubes are filled with water as an intermediate medium.
After the concrete cures for 3-7 days, a sound source
(emitter) and receiver are lowered to the bottom of a
pair of access tubes and then raised at a constant speed,
maintaining a consistent elevation between emitter and
receiver. A signal generator generates a sonic pulse from
the emitter which is recorded by the receiver. Relative
energy, waveform and First Arrival Time (FAT) time are
recorded, and logged. This procedure is repeated for all the
tube pairs (profiles) in the pile. The data from each profile is
processed and then plotted.
GEOTECH TESTING SERVICES (PVT.) LTD. having
pioneered the introduction of electronic pile testing
technology for the construction industry in Sri Lanka
has subsequently introduced the following state of the
art electronic technologies of testing the soundness of
driven concrete piles. Also indicated are the sites where
the test was introduced
Bi- directional Test - KRRISH Square Development Project (2013)
Crosshole Sonic Logging (CSL) – Southern Highway Project (2006)
Pile Dynamic Analyzer (PDA) – President’s Palace Project (2001)
Pile Integrity Test (PIT) – Ceylinco Seylan Tower Project (1996)
PILE INTEGRITY TEST (PIT)A simple and economic test carried out on concrete piles
to determine the integrity of piles and the presence of
any cracks, voids, discontinuities and other similar defects.
An invaluable method to select the representative piles
to perform the load tests. The cost effectiveness of the
test enables the testing of all the piles in projects with
hundreds of piles.
This test is covered under the ASTM D 5882-07(2013)
Australian standard AS 2159-1995, French standard NFP
94-106-2, among others.
Geotech Testing Services (Pvt.) Ltd.
PILE DYNAMIC ANALYZER TEST (PDA)A more complex and advanced testing technique for
determining the load carrying capacity of both bored and
driven piles, is carried out using the Pile Dynamic Analyzer.
This state of the art electric pile testing technique using
the highly sensitive method of monitoring pile response
to an imposed dynamic load, by strain transducers and
accelerometers, provides the input data for computer
analysis to determine the load carrying capacity of the pile.
This response is captured and stored as digital data, and
is analyzed using proprietary CAPWAP analysis to provide
highly reliable information on the load carrying capacity of
the pile both by shaft friction and end bearing. The test is
covered by ASTM D 4945-12
Comparison of the graphs from various profiles provides
information on the structural soundness of the concrete
throughout the pile.
A more advanced, higher-end analysis that creates a mock
3-dimensional graphical display of the concrete soundness
throughout the pile is known as Crosshole Sonic
Tomography. This enables better definition and location of
zones of doubtful integrity within the pile.

BI DIRECTIONAL TEST A comprehensive testing method termed Bi Directional
Load Test originally developed by Prof. Osterberg in USA,
has been developed to gather comprehensive data on the
performance of bored and cast - in - situ concrete piles
under the applied test load. In contrast to the standard
maintained load test using top loading against a reaction
kentledge system, this method provides a plethora of data
not only from the pile toe but from the shaft resistance as
well.
It has the distinct additional advantage of eliminating the
need for large and cumbersome reaction loads, which
would be impossible in some locations. In addition the
instrumentation of the pile can contribute even more data
on the behavior of different segments of the pile shaft/soil
interface.
Geotech Testing Services (Pvt) Ltd is proud to have intro-
duced this system of testing which is covered by ASTM D
114 3D - 2007 for the first time in Sri Lanka with a test load
of up to 5000 tons.
Laboratory tests on construction materials provide the
technical information on the quality of a product. The data
is used by structural engineers and architects to design
structures best suited for the terrain.
Group Engineering Laboratories (Pvt) Ltd is a fully
equipped soil laboratory offering a wide range of
Chemical, Mechanical and Physical tests on samples of Soil,
Rock, Aggregate, Concrete and Water under laboratory
conditions, as well as field tests. Additionally, individual
analytical schemes for specific requirements are arranged
