Coral reefs

benefit a healthy

world by

providing:

Habitat – More than 1 million types of ocean species live in the reef Medicine There may be medicines that have not been discovered yet hidden in the reef Protection – The reef creates a natural fence protecting beaches and coastal towns.

Living coral reef with a colorful variety of different species

Dead coral reef – no color, no fish, and no variety

Coral Reef Alive vs. Dead

The reef forms an eecosystem for different plants and animals to live in. Just like in a rainforest on land a variety of different plants and animals live in a coral reef. Some people call coral reefs “underwater cities”. This is because they are a shelter and habitat for more than 4000 different types of fish!

“The Rainforest of the Sea”

Dangers to Coral Reefs Today many coral reefs are in danger. People

dump harmful chemicals in the ocean that can kill coral reefs. In some places people catch too many fish. When the fish are gone, the animals that eat the fish can also die. The whole coral reef ecosystem can become sick and die. These threats are dangerous. Thankfully people are starting to be more aware of how delicate and special these reefs are. Many people are making great discoveries about what we can do to help this special part of our world.

The Life of Coral Reefs Coral looks like a brightly colored rock in the ocean. But

did you know it is actually a living animal? Coral lives in warm shallow seas. They group together in colonies. Colonies have different shapessizes and colors. Some look like colorful plants or strange underwater trees. When coral dies the skeleton stays. The skeletons form layers and layers of coral rocks. Living coral lives on top of the rock. When all the colonies form togetherwe call this a reef.

ART CHALLENGE: Creative COLOR Wheels!

Color Wheel: A Circular visual tool that shows all the colors of the spectrum and how they relate to one another.

1. Check out the Color Theory Keynote (also posted on Schoology) for an artist’s color review!

2. Create your own creative color wheel piece using materials you find at home. Your piece can be a permanent or temporary art installation piece. For example, you can create a drawing or painting or collage meant for display in your home OR you can arrange found objects or even edible items into a temporary color wheel on a table or the floor and take a picture! You must include all the six primary and secondary colors. 3rd-5th grade should also include the tertiary colors, for a total of 12 colors in your color wheel.

Examining Film Scores

Hello Sycamore! This week, you will look closely at music that is written by composers for movies and television. Composers are people who write music, professionally. Sometimes, composers specifically write music for movies and TV shows. These pieces of music are called “Film Scores.” Film scores are used to portray characters, storylines, and settings (times and places) in movies or TV show.

*Choose one of the following Film Score Activities to complete at home, this week. Submit your responses for a Caught in the ACT Card.*

Activity #1: Assess a Film Score From Your Favorite Movie or TV show

Choose a movie or TV show that you enjoy. Watch some of the movie or one of your favorite scenes, and listen closely to the film score. Then, answer the following questions…

1) What movie or TV show did you choose for this activity? 2) What kind of mood or feeling do you think the composer is trying to convey in the scene that you watched? 3) How does the film score composer use music and instruments to express that mood? 4) Did the composer use specific instruments to express moods or characters? If so, how? 5) Did the composer use instruments to portray different actions (walking, skipping, etc.)? If so, how?

Activity #2: Assess a Cartoon Film Score

Click on one of the links below and watch the cartoon clip. As you watch, pay close attention to the film score. Then, answer the questions.

Tom & Jerry Wile E. Coyote &. the Roadrunner Bugs Bunny Tweety and Sylvester

1) Which clip did you choose to watch? 2) How did the composer use music to express different moods throughout the cartoon? 3) What specific instruments or instrument families do you hear throughout the clip? 4) How does the composer use instruments to express moods or characters? 5) How are different instruments used to represent the sounds of different actions (walking, skipping, etc.)? 6) How does the speed or intensity of the music change to enhance movements and actions throughout the clip?

*As an extension activity, do some research on the composer who wrote the music for the movie or TV show that you selected. See if you recognize other films or TV shows that they wrote music for.

SUMS General Education Opportunities Energy is All Around Us!

ALL Grades! Don’t forget to be saving some recycled supplies for next week’s engineering activity. Things to save would be: empty paper towel rolls, empty toilet paper rolls, cardboard, cereal boxes, popsicle sticks, straws, newspaper, tin foil, plastic cartons/bottles, etc. You will also need a marble or small ball. :) Thank you, Mrs. Opela

May 4 - 8

Kindergarten A force is a push or pull. When force is used to move things, work is done. Energy is the ability to do work. Watch this VIDEO to learn about force, work, and energy. Look around your home and see if you can find any toys or objects that can be pushed or pulled in different ways to create movement. What do you think would happen if you pushed softly on a ball? What would happen if you pushed hard on a ball? What happens when the magnets from your refrigerator come close to each other? What happens when the magnets get close to the refrigerator? Write your observations in your Science journal.

1st Grade A force is a push or pull. When force is used to move things, work is done. Energy is the ability to do work. Watch this VIDEO to learn about force, work, and energy. Find different round object/balls in your home. See what happens if you push softly on a ball? What happens if you push hard on a ball? What is the cause of the movement? What happens if you push a ball on a soft surface (like carpet or grass)? What force is acting on the ball on the soft surface? What happens if you push a ball on a hard surface (like tile or concrete)? Does the ball go faster, slower, or farther? What other toys can you push or pull in different ways to create movement? What happens when the magnets from your refrigerator come close to each other? What happens when the magnets get close to the refrigerator? Write your observations in your Science journal.

2nd Grade Sound is a type of energy we can hear. Watch this VIDEO to review sound wave energy. What causes sound? What is volume? What is pitch? Use different household items to explore the difference between loud and soft sounds. Try making up a song that includes different levels of volume. Use your voice to explore high and low pitch. Compare and contrast your pitch with someone else in your home. Is it higher or lower? Write your findings and observations on sound energy in your Science Journal.

3rd Grade Sound is a type of energy we can hear.

4th Grade Electricity is a type of energy. Watch this VIDEO to review electrical energy. Go through your home and try to find at least 10 different sources of current electrical energy. Is each source a direct current or alternating current? What is the energy output (the energy effect produced, example: light and heat from a lamp) from each source? Write all your observations and findings in your Science Journal.

5th Grade When force is used to move things, work is done. Energy is the ability to do work. Watch this VIDEO to review force and motion, and this VIDEO to review gravity. In your Science Journal, define gravity, force, motion, friction, weight and mass. See if you can find two balls with different masses/weights in your home (a small bouncy ball and a heavier baseball for example). Create an inclined plane (a slope or ramp) with books and a piece of wood or cardboard. Place the inclined plane on a smooth, hard surface such as tile or concrete. One at a time and without exerting any extra force, let each ball roll from the top of the inclined plane and measure how far the ball travels. What force was acting on the ball as it rolled? Which ball rolled farther and why? Now try placing your inclined plane on a soft surface such as carpet or grass and repeat rolling the balls and measuring their distance traveled. Did they not roll as far? Why? What forces were acting upon the balls this time? Write your findings and observations in your Science Journal.
