BAPTISMS - BAUTISMO: Parents are advised to call the appropriate Rectory for a preliminary interview. Saint Joseph Parishioners must attend a preparation class on the 1st Wednesday of the month at 7:45 PM prior to the Baptism.
Baptisms are held on the 2nd and 4th Sundays of the month at 1:30 PM. Our Lady of Good Counsel Parishioners are required to attend a preparation class. To arrange a date call Lena Artusa.
Baptisms are celebrated on the 3rd Sunday of the month at 12:30 PM. Saint Joachim Parishioners: All arrangements are to be made through parish.

We encourage those planning a marriage to contact the appropriate Parish before booking the Reception Hall. FAST AND ABSTINENCE All Catholics who have reached their four-
teenth year are bound to abstain entirely from meat on Ash Wednesday and all the Fridays of
Lent. All Catholics between the ages of eighteen and fifty-nine
inclusive are also bound to observe the law of fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. This means limiting oneself to a single full meal and avoiding food between meals. Two other light meals, which together do not equal a full meal,
may be taken during the day.

An orientation meeting will be held at Our Lady of Good Counsel Church on April 2nd, at 11AM, for any students in 3rd through 7th grade interested in be-coming an altar server for Our Lady of Good Counsel and St. Joachim’s. At least one parent must attend the meeting. You will receive information about the responsibilities involved and a schedule of the training dates at the meeting.

PAX CHRISTI LI PEACE - AWARD LUNCHEON, APRIL 9 Pax Christi Long Island will present its annual Peacemaker of the Year Award this year to Claire Deroche, social justice coordinator for the
Unitarian Universalist Congregation at Shelter Rock (UUCSR, in Man-hasset. The Peace Award luncheon will be at the Islamic Center of
Long Island, 835 Brush Hollow Road, Westbury, on Saturday, April 9 at 11AM.
As social justice coordinator Claire provides support to UUCSR social justice initiatives, works closely with the Social Justice Committee and the Socially Responsible Investment Subcommittee, and collaborates
with the congregation’s religious education program.
In years past, Claire worked as a teacher, religious education profession-al, and volunteer director at Catholic parishes and non-profits in Maine
and New York. From 1986 to 1992 she served with the Maryknoll Sisters in La Paz, Bolivia.
In the 1980s, she served as Maine state coordinator for NETWORK, the Catholic Social Justice Lobby. She was also was active with Pax Christi and organized their first state-wide retreat led by Rev. Daniel Berrigan,
SJ. Claire has a BA in English from St. Joseph’s College in North Wind-ham, ME and an MA in Biblical Studies form Providence College.

ANNUAL COMMUNION BREAKFAST
Open to All Parishioners “The Future of Diocese of Rockville
Centre Parishes” On Sunday, April 10th, in the Monsignor James Kelly Parish Center at ST. AGNES CATHEDRAL, the St. Agnes Knights of Columbus will host a Communion Breakfast after the 9:30 am mass. The guest speaker will be Father Tom Moriarty. He is the pastor of three area parishes – St. Joseph’s in Hewlett, St. Joachim in Cedarhurst, and Our Lady of Good Counsel in Inwood. Father Tom is the first pastor in the diocese to lead multiple parishes at once. All are welcome to share a delicious breakfast and good compa-ny, while hearing a unique perspective on the future of parishes on Long Island. In addition, the winner of The St. Agnes Knights of Co-lumbus scholastic essay contest will read his or her es-say. The topic is “Discuss the Major Challenges Facing Young Catholics in Society Today.” The cost of the breakfast is $20 per person, free for chil-dren 5 and under. Palm Sunday of the Lord’s Passion Misericordiae Vultus: The Face of Mercy is Pope Francis’ official decree announcing this Jubilee Year of Mercy. But Francis had already declared that Jesus “has shown the face of God’s mercy” back in 2013 on his first Palm Sunday as pope. Francis de-scribed Luke’s account of Jesus’ entrance into Je-rusalem: “Crowds, celebrating, praise, blessing, peace: joy fills the air. Jesus has awakened great hopes, especially in the hearts of the simple, the humble, the poor, the forgotten, those who do not matter in the eyes of the world. He understands human sufferings . . . has bent down to heal body and soul.” Entering Jerusalem, Jesus looks at all of us with love, Francis continued, at our sicknesses and sins. “A beautiful scene, full of light—the light of the love of Jesus” (Pope Francis, Palm Sunday homily, March 24, 2013). May this Jubilee Year’s Holy Week and Triduum make us Jesus’ own light-bearers and love-givers to all who long to see the Face of Mercy.

With Flu season right around the corner, we offer the following suggestions.

Holy Communion: Priests, Deacons and Eucharistic Ministers should be especially encouraged to wash
their hands before Mass begins.
Communion from the Cup: The faithful should refrain from drinking from the cup when one has a cold.
Greeting of Peace: The faithful should use good judgment and limit contact with others when sick.
Mass Attendance: If one is sick, there in no obligation to attend Mass, personal prayer
and reflection is encouraged

PHYSICIAN ASSISTED SUICIDE There are two physician assisted suicide bills currently in committee in the NYS Legislature: A.5261B (Paulin) / S.5814 (Bonacic) and A.2129A (Rosenthal) / S.3685 (Savino). A law-suit has also been filed by an assisted suicide advocacy organization to overturn NY's ban.
New York's current law prohibits assisting in suicide by anyone, including doctors who prescribe lethal doses of drugs. This law was challenged in 1994 and upheld as constitutional by the US Supreme Court in Vacco vs. Quill in 1997. The 2011 Code of Medical Ethics of the American Medical Asso-ciation states, "Allowing physicians to participate in assisted sui-cide would cause more harm than good. Physician-assisted suicide is fundamentally incompatible with the physician's role as healer, would be difficult or impossible to control, and would pose seri-ous societal risks." The 2015 position statement of the Medical Society of the State of New York reads in part, "Compelling argu-ments have not been made for medicine to change its footing and to incorporate the active shortening of life into the norms of medi-cal practice." The NYS Catholic Conference position paper on assisted suicide states, "New York State rightly spends millions of dollars each year in efforts to prevent suicide…. legalizing assisted suicide would send an inconsistent message by saying that some lives are not worth living. This double standard would be based entirely on disability, as patients fear "losing autonomy" or "being a bur-den" to others because of their disabilities from terminal illness. Lifting New York's ban on assisted suicide would provide a dead-ly, unnecessary option to patients, many of whom fear pain, de-pression and abandonment. These persons can be significantly helped through pain relief, palliative care, and the hospice envi-ronment and compassionate loving care." La liturgia oficial de la Iglesia para el Domingo de Ramos es algo paradójica. Entramos procla-mando Hosannas con cantos y vítores y al poco tiempo estamos gritando: “¡crucifícalo, crucifí-calo!” Según el rito la lectura del Evangelio y la consagración de la Eucaristía se hacen dentro del templo, pero se comienza afuera del templo con la bendición de los ramos. En Estados Unidos y otros países latinoame-ricanos se usan palmas en lugar de ramos. En Europa, normalmente, se usan ramos de olivos. Últimamente en Colombia para proteger la pal-ma de cera del Quindío, se les ha pedido a los fieles que usen ramitas de plantas o ramos de flores. Estoy de acuerdo hay que proteger el am-biente, pero admito que prefiero las palmas, ya que es difícil poner un ramo de olivo o de flores detrás de una imagen sagrada colgada en la pa-red. Esta es una costumbre latina que nos recuer-da que los “hosannas” y el “crucifícalo” del do-mingo de ramos nos acompañan todos los días del año.

PASSION The word “passion” connotes deep, focused engagement. It also relates to passivity, interesting-ly. The deeply passionate person in the Gospel nar-rative from Luke is Jesus. He appears passive, but he is not. He is wholly self-possessed and wholly present for the one day that begins on Thursday evening at his last meal with his apostles and ends with his burial before sunset the next day. Then follows the long Sabbath silence. The narrative of the Passion is read whole and without pause on the Palm Sunday of the Passion. This story, found in each of the Gospels, is unchanging. We are the ones who change. Each year, we bring ourselves with another year’s history to hear and heed the story we so bad-ly need. Life has its way with us, and we look again to the Passion narratives to learn to follow.
PASIÓN La palabra “pasión” conlleva un profundo y deter-minado compromiso. Pero es interesante que también tiene relación a la pasividad. La persona profundamente
apasionada del relato evangélico de Lucas es Jesús. Parece pasivo pero no lo es. Está totalmente consciente de sí mismo y total-mente presente al día que comienza el jue-ves por la noche en su última cena con los apóstoles y termina con su entierro antes de la puesta del sol el día siguiente. Entonces le sigue el largo silencio del sábado. El relato de la pasión se lee entero y sin pausa el Domingo de Ramos en la Pa-
sión. Esta historia, que se encuentra en cada uno de los evangelios, no cambia. Somos nosotros los que cambia-mos. Cada año, nos presentamos con otro año de histo-ria para escuchar y hacerle caso a esta historia que tanta falta nos hace. La vida nos traquetea y de nuevo volve-mos a los relatos de la Pasión para aprender a seguirle.

Three years ago, as we made the shift in the Eucharistic Prayer from “Benedict” to “Francis,” we named a “treasure” in our tradition. From apostolic times, the Church has sent disciples on mission with a mandate to proclaim the gospel. Paul and Barnabas and Timothy come to mind as men invested with responsibility for community and mission. First we see bishops, “overseers,” good men appointed by the acclaim of their people, the center of leadership, of prayer, of word and sacrament. Their territories were small initially, small enough to get everyone into one room and for the bishop to know every-one’s name. In time, men were appointed to function as a council of advisers, “elders,” or presbyters. That isn’t a comment on chronological age, rather it indicates the maturity of their wisdom and faith. Before long, and only when the bishop was absent, some of these men “stood in” for him to do what bishops usually did: preaching, presiding at Eucharist. The deacons had a strong and visible role in liturgy and service, especially in the care of the poor, but were gradually overshadowed by the new importance of the presbyter. As the Roman Empire first tottered and then collapsed completely by 476, bishops increasingly became civil servants to maintain order and dispense justice. Conferences and duties summoned bishops away from their home posts, and presbyters were entrusted with the sacramental and preaching duties, even though at one time runners were sent out from the bishop’s Mass to bring fragments of the host to drop into chalices as a sign of the church’s unity around its bishop. What day is today? Ask most folks strolling home from church today and they will reply “Palm Sunday.” Not too long ago, today was known as the “Second Sunday of the Passion,” and in 1970 it was renamed “Passion Sunday.” This made some sense, since the procession recalling Christ’s entry into Jerusalem is usually only celebrated once in a parish on this day, but the Passion is proclaimed solemnly at every liturgy. In its most recent incarnation, the name for this day includes both aspects of the celebration: “Palm Sunday of the Passion of the Lord.” In the United States today, most worshipers are provided with palm branches, although in northern Europe pussy willows are favored, and in Italy olive branches are the norm. When our calendar was reformed, the entire structure of the week to come was revised even as the traditional name, “Holy Week,” was retained. The major benefit of the restructuring of our calendar is to help us see that the Triduum, the great three days beginning at sunset this Thursday and extending until sunset on Easter Sunday, is at the heart of the Christian life. Today, as you ponder the Lord’s Passion, you may consider your response to so great a gift. Centuries ago, good Christians vowed to go on pilgrimage to Jerusalem. Today, at least once in your lifetime, promise to participate faithfully in the liturgies. Now begins the Church’s annual baptismal retreat: don’t be left out!
