PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

SuDSFLOW spacers (GB Patent no.1104484.9) providea precise method of installation to all types of flagpaving giving consistent and accurate joint widths –thereby allowing almost any modular paving to be usedas permeable paving. When combined with a suitablesub-base any domestic or commercial pavementsystem can be installed to meet any existing orcurrently proposed SUDS legislation. Its function is toturn any standard modular paving units into source-control water attenuation paving system via the totalinfiltration method.

(450 x 450 flags).

STRUCTURAL INTEGRITYMAINTAINED TO PAVING

SuDSFLOW spacers are designed to be equal to orexceed the compressive strength of the nibs onconventional permeable block paving units.Additionally SuDSFLOW spacers are normally able tobe used close to buildings, as they allow dispersal ofinfiltration similar to natural vegetation. So the 5mguidance provided for by Buildings Regulations forsoakaways (which provides for a single pointdischarge) need not apply.

FEATURES

• Architects are not limited to the range of purposemade permeable paving – with SuDSFLOW mostmodular paving units can be used in a permeablepaving scheme

• Local Authorities – a range of permeable paving is nolonger required for repairs and maintenance

• Turns a domestic driveway into one large soakaway

• Designed and manufactured to comply with the Draft Legislation Flood and Water Management Bill

• Clean and controlled water discharge

• SuDSFLOW is designed to absorb rainfall at the samerate as it would on unpaved ground

• SuDSFLOW paving will allow rainwater to infiltratedirectly into a suitable sub-grade allowing it toattenuate before release

• Spacers provide a consistent 10mm joint width

• Puddle-free paving

• Ice-free paving

• Made from 100% re-cycled materials.

With SuDSFLOW paving it is usually unnecessary toincorporate gullies, drainage pipes, drain runs and flow control mechanisms associated with traditionaldrainage. The voids in the sub-base retain water until itcan drain naturally back into the water table.

PRECAUTIONSAreas in excess of 100m2, areas subject toheavy loading, frequent vehicular trafficking orareas with a relatively impervious sub-grade willrequire a specialist sub-structure design by asuitably qualified Civil Engineering professionalWhilst the sub-base material is described as opengraded – (and thus can ‘store’ water) it must still becompacted in the usual manner.

The SuDSFLOW construction detail i.e. TheSuDSFLOW construction detail (below) is designedfor pedestrian pavements and low-usage domesticdriveways but can be used commercially with anadequately designed sub-base.

It is recommended that permeable paving should betreated at least once annually with Resiblock Bio-Wash to prevent weeds/grass growth in the joints.

Should there be issues with the jointing materialremoval and/or staining of the paver surface werecommend sealing with Resiblock Envirofix(www.resiblock.com).

DOMESTIC DRIVEWAY

Pre-InstallationTest to determine the permeability of the ground.Dig a hole in the area to be paved approximately600 x 600mm and deep enough to clear the topsoil, leaving the sub-soil exposed. In this sub-soil, dig afurther hole 300x300x300mm and fill with water. Ifthe hole empties within 24 hours then the ground isprobably suitable for a SuDSFLOW driveway.

Jointing MaterialUse a no-fines self-locking aggregate ideally 4-6mm hard clean crushed stone.

Bedding Course (Laying/Screed)2-6mm clean hard crushed stone (angular, no-fines). Depth 30-50mm.

Sub-BaseNo-fines coarse graded aggregate (CGA) cleancrushed stone 4-20mm or 4-40mm aka Type 3material (30% voids) Depth 180-300mm.

Geo-textilesThese can be used in 0-3 places in the substrate – in particular consider a geo-textile between the sub-base and bedding course. However provided there isadequate interlock between the aggregate particles –geo-textiles can be an unnecessary cost imposition.

Additional BenefitsBioremediation of hydrocarbons

Retention of Heavy metals

The potential capacity to deal with rainfall intensities50 times greater than that required by the regulations

Can be used with both pavers and flags.

OVERVIEW DATA

Environmental ValidationIt is the Resigap Ltd stated intention for SuDSFLOWto become one of the best validated permeablepaving systems and as such strives to comply withthe requirements for the Code for SustainableHomes, BREEAM, the EU Water FrameworkDirective and the DEFRA Future Water document.

The use of SuDSFLOW spacers in combination withsuitable paving units and bedding materials shouldaddress water management, pollution removal andrainwater recycling issues.

Infiltration SystemSuDSFLOW spacer permeable modular pavementsystems allows rainwater to directly infiltrate intothe subgrade. SuDSFLOW can also however beused as part of a Tanked System allowing rainwaterto attenuate before release; additionally the samesystem can be useful where difficult orcontaminated sub-grades are encountered.

Lower construction costsConstruction costs incorporating SuDSFLOWspacers can be less expensive than conventionallydrained surfaces as it is not necessary to incorporategullies, drainage pipes, drain runs and flow controlmechanisms that are required for conventionaldrainage. Additionally our suggested sub-base (1.8 tonnes/m3) is open textured and therefore has

a greater spread rate than traditional Type 1 (2.2tonnes/m3). Specialist permeable paving units are notrequired potentially adding further to the cost savings.

Control of run-off/Discharge waterFor rainfall occurrences with minimal rainfall depths(<5mm) there should be no effective run-off from aSuDSFLOW pavement. Run-off during heavy periodsof rain is virtually eliminated. A design incorporatingSuDSFLOW spacers allow water to infiltrate throughvertical channels within the pavement at a rate of upto 10,000mm/m2/hour. Further the compacted sub-base has voids of around 30% of volume whichshould allow storm water to be attenuated within thesystem and released in a controlled manner over aperiod of time.

GENERAL TECHNICAL DATA

On porous ground, and where there is adjacentflower beds and/or lawns consideration should begiven to leave gaps at suitable intervals along thehaunching to allow the bedding course toadditionally drain into those garden areas.

If there is cause for concern that standing water willsoften the sub-base in an unlined system, anominal fall to an outfall should be considered.

Occasionally if the sub-base is silty or plastic itmay be necessary to stabilize it or partially replaceit with a granular capping.

The total depth of the sub-base may be dictated bythe expected loading/desired water storage/subbase strength.

The amount of water which can pass through apermeable flagged pavement is dependent on theinfiltration rates of the joint filing, laying course andpermeable sub-base materials and not the proportionof open area in relation to the flagged surface.

SHW clause 805 4/40mm (crushed concrete)bound with 2/6 3mm crushed concrete aggregateto EN12620. Graded crushed concrete to EN12620(re-cycled materials will add significantly to theoverall sustainability of the project).

PLEASE NOTE: Because rainwater will pass

through the driveway (rather than drained off

of it) and the environmental nature of

construction in general occasional –

settlement should be expected and paving can

be lifted to simply repair.

It is not feasible for permeable pavements in

general to provide a structure which will

withstand the greatest rainfall that has ever

occurred. It is therefore more economic to

tolerate periodic flooding rather than to design

a system for every intense storm.

If in doubt re sub-base consult the Interpave

‘Permeable Pavements Manual’.
