Checklist of BIRDS of the Audubon Center in Greenwich The mission of Audubon Greenwich is to motivate people to conserve, restore, and enjoy nature, focusing on birds, other wildlife and their habitats, through education, land stewardship, science, and public policy advocacy. Since 1941, thousands of enthusiastic birders have searched the Center’s fields, meadows, forests, and wetlands for birds and have diligently recorded over 200 species of birds. This checklist contains the result of their efforts. It describes the seasonal abundance of species that have been reliably noted at the Center. Space is provided for recording the number of each species found and general trip information. Species that are extremely rare are listed as ‘accidental.’ Visitors are urged to check a field guide in order to assure the accurate identification of birds encountered. Please advise a Center naturalist when a rare species is observed so that its identification can be corroborated. Written field notes of unusual sightings with sketches or drawings are useful for later review. Information about recent sightings, field guides, bird hikes, and help for novices are available at the Center’s Nature Store. # SPECIES SP SU EF LF W # SPECIES SP SU EF LF W ____Warbler, Black-throated Green U R U O ____Cowbird, Brown-headed* A U C A O ____Warbler, Blackburnian U O R ____Oriole, Orchard O R R ____Warbler, Pine U U O ____Oriole, Baltimore* C C C O ____Warbler, Prairie* O R O R ____Grosbeak, Pine R R ____Warbler, Palm C O U ____Finch, Purple O R O U ____Warbler, Bay-breasted O U ____Finch, House* A A A A A ____Warbler, Blackpoll U C U ____Crossbill, Red R R R ____Warbler, Cerulean R ____Crossbill, White-winged R R R ____Warbler, Black-&-White* C C C R ____Redpoll, Common O O O ____Redstart, American* C O C R ____Siskin, Pine U O U ____Warbler, Prothonotary R ____Goldfinch, American* A C A A U ____Warbler, Worm-eating* C C O ____Grosbeak, Evening R R U O ____Ovenbird* C C C ____Sparrow, House* A A A A A ____Waterthrush, Northern O O R Other Species: ____Waterthrush, Louisiana* O O R ____Warbler, Kentucky* R R R ACCIDENTALS ____Warbler, Connecticut R R Anhinga- 9/14/96 ____Warbler, Mourning R R Heron, Little Blue- 6/12/71 ____Yellowthroat, Common* C C A U Ibis, Glossy- 7/26/76 ____Warbler, Hooded* R R R Shoveler, Northern- 10/2/70, 5/15/96 ____Warbler, Wilson’s O O Scaup, Lesser- 4/16/64, 4/15/74 ____Warbler, Canada* U O C Hawk, Swainson’s- 10/12/91, 9/29/96, 10/11/97 & 10/17/97 ____Chat, Yellow-breasted* R R O R R Coot, American- 7/29/65 ____Tanager, Scarlet* C C C R Crane, Sandhill- 10/13/93 ____Cardinal, Northern* A A A A A Yellowlegs, Lesser- 5/14/77 ____Grosbeak, Rose-breasted* C O C R Gull, Bonaparte’s- 10/95 ____Bunting, Indigo* O C U Monk Parakeet- F, 2001 ____Dickcissel R R Woodpecker, Black-backed- 4/9-5/14/61 ____Towhee, Eastern* C U C C O Kingbird, Western- 9/11/95 ____Sparrow, American Tree U R O R Wren, Marsh- 9/95 ____Sparrow, Chipping* C C C O Wren, Sedge- 10/25/98 ____Sparrow, Field* U O O U R Raven, Common- 10/9/95 ____Sparrow, Vesper R R R Warbler,Yellow-throated- 5/3-4/86 ____Sparrow, Savannah O O O Tanager, Summer- 5/10/80, 5/19/85, 5/21/88 ____Sparrow, Fox U O U R Grosbeak, Blue- 10/4/84 ____Sparrow, Song* A A A A A Sparrow, Nelson’s Sharp-tailed- 6/1/74 ____Sparrow, Lincoln’s O O O ____Sparrow, Swamp* C O U U O ____Sparrow, White-throated C O A U ____Sparrow, White-crowned O R R O R ____Junco, Dark-eyed C C U ____Bunting, Snow R R ____Bobolink O U R ____Blackbird, Red-winged* A C A A ____Meadowlark, Eastern R R R ____Blackbird, Rusty R O R ____Grackle, Common* A C C A O Seasonal Status SP (Spring) March – May SU (Summer) June & July EF (Early Fall) August & September LF (Late Fall) October & November W (Winter) December – February Abundance A (Abundant) Often seen in large numbers C (Common) Often seen in moderate numbers U (Uncommon) Usually seen, but could be missed O (Occasional) Infrequently seen, often hard to find R (Rare) Not reported every year, often very few seen * Has nested in recent years _ Underlined - variable numbers, may go unreported for years FIELD TRIP INFO Observer: Date: / / Time: Weather: Comments: 6/03 Checklist compiled by Joseph Zeranski
