TAEYC Newsletter
Summer 2011 www.taeyc.org
When you were a child do you remember the joys of summer? Some of my best memories include making mud pies, riding my bike, playing in the sprinklers, cook-outs with my family, and eating a freshly cut open watermelon. Summers have changed from when I was a child, however, that gives us more reason for us all to help children feel the same freedoms and excitement that we remember. We have a rare opportunity during the early years of child’s life to make those memories that they will look back upon one day and say “remember when…..” During the last year and half as I have served as your president it has helped me focus on what “service” really means. You serve families everyday as you provide a safe environment, offer a healthy meal, or create opportunities for children that pro-mote exercise and brain development. I am encouraged from our First Lady Michelle Obama’s launch of Let’s Move! Child Care. You can find much more information about this initiative at http://www.healthykidshealthyfuture.org. This effort can change the way children think about nutrition and healthy lifestyles. Read more about the simple five goals and take the quiz to see how your environment ranks….you might just be sur-prised. I hope you will join us in Memphis at our annual conference. This will take place on October 12th – 15th and I will look forward to meeting those of you who are attend-ing for the first time. The conference committee has been hard at work and has put to-gether a wonderful program. It’s also election time for TAYEC to select new officers. I encourage you to take advantage of the opportunity you will have to vote. I want to thanks all of our nominees for their willingness to lead this association. You are caring for our most precious resource – the children of Tennessee! Please take pride in this important job – and let us know how TAEYC can help you in this journey for children! Debbie Ferguson TAEYC President
Greetings from our TAEYC President

I love that my degree and job consist of equal parts Education and Business because I feel an
affinity to both. Although guiding the children and teachers is the very best part of my job, I am
also fond of the accounting part and have thoroughly enjoyed serving on the TAEYC Finance
Committee these past two years. It would be my honor to serve as your TAEYC Treasurer.

on the TAEYC Board. Lin stated, “I am so honored to be nominated for the position of NAEYC Affili-
ate Representative to serve a second term. Since elected I have tried to represent Tennessee and TAEYC
membership well. It has been a pleasure to call attention to the various services and systems we have in
our state that support TAEYC and those who work with young children. We have been accepted to par-
ticipate in the NAEYC state summits for the last two years which has placed us in a better position for
being aware of National trends and giving recognition to those who work with Tennessee‟s children. If
elected, I will strive to continue to provide excellent representation for our state. Thank you.”

SECA Representative-Elect
Lisa Maddox-Vinson My name is Lisa Maddox-Vinson and my journey began at Middle Tennessee State
University in the Early Childhood Department. I always knew I wanted to work with
children and make a difference in their lives. During my time at MTSU I worked in a
preschool, teaching in every room wanting to now where I belonged in this beautiful
world of children. I had always adored children's book and thought if I could find a job
that did both what a perfect world. It happened; I worked at the Laverne Public Library
as the director of children's services for seventeen years. I planned all the programs for
children and worked with every department in the city doing activities for children. I
was also the public relations director for the library and attended meetings supporting
children. It is during this time that I was asked to serve on the board for the Rutherford
County AEYC. I served on that board for many years and I am so proud that I got to be a part of this
organization. This is where my relationship with Tennessee Association for the Education of Young
Children began. In 2004 I started a new journey my own business; Get Connected With Lisa! My busi-
ness travels nationally doing trainings for teachers on many topics such as books, props, and how to use
them in the classroom. I do storytimes for children with activities that bring books to life. I also work
for the Austin Peay State University TECTA program as an Orientation Coordinator. During my
time with the APSU TECTA I had the responsibility to launch the new affiliate Two Rivers AEYC. I
had the honor of serving as the first president of this organization and it has been my privilege to watch
this organization grow. I have served as TAEYC „s SECA representative for the past three years and
would be honored to get to serve another term. It is such an honor that everyday the job we do as this
organization changes lives! As my journey moves on I look forward to the children and adults that I will
encounter. Thanks!
Cathy Waggoner
Cathy Waggoner graduated from University of TN Martin in 1973 with a degree in
education and a marriage license that has been good for 38 years, 3 children, and 5
grandchildren who are perfect in every way from their grandmother‟s view.
Her first experience in early childhood education was with Head Start in 1968 as a
teen volunteer when it was a summer pilot program in her hometown. The passion
grew as she worked with various programs including a faith based childcare center
for 20 years, as an assistant teacher, teacher, and last as director for 15 years.
Since 2004, she serves as administrator for Promethean Foundation, a scholarship
program for at-risk preschool children in Obion County. This program has brought
her into a close working relationship with many of the support agencies that make a difference in the
quality of the childcare environment. She served as President of the Northwest Chapter of TAEYC
and most recently serves as the Membership Chairman for TAEYC. In 2007, she served on the
TAEYC conference committee for Memphis. Other positions she has held or is currently serving
include Advisory Boards for TECTA, CCR&R, UTM Child and Family Grant Program, Obion
County and Union City Pre-K, and Northwest TN Boys and Girls Club Board of Directors.
She participates on the Vanderbilt Peabody Pre-K Research team as an assessor. She serves
on the Union City School Board since 2004. As a regular SECA conference attendee, Cathy
has found this organization valuable as it addresses the regional issues facing southerners.
As with TAEYC, membership in SECA is an advantage to any professional seeking to meet
the needs of young children.
