ARIA is a non profit, Private
Institution of Social Solidarity (IPSS),
that works with people with mental
health disabilities in psychosocial
disadvantage.
It was created in 1991, by a group of
mental health providers from
Psychiatric Department of Hospital
São Francisco Xavier in Lisbon.

Mission: To help people with severe mental illness acquire the resources
necessary for their rehabilitation and social-professional integration, motivating
their autonomy and participation in their recovery process.

partners where they are weighing the benefits and consequences of our actions;

Activities:
•Vocational training and mental health promotion sessions;
• Development and maintenance of protected residential structures and
social integration community centres;
• Support of social skills development for people undergoing the
recovery process;
• Promotion of exchange of experiences and know-how and
collaboration in local social networks.

providing support and orientation in the search for employment and provide residential and
occupational support, as a complement of social and professional rehabilitation

Responsible for:
Reception, selection, and guidance/orientation of users;
Case management - Social Security, Housing, Health,
Family, and other personal issues.

Aims:
To promote socio-economical autonomy of people with
mental health problems and reinforcement of their socio-
professional skills, through a theoretical and practical
learning framework and professional qualification.
Courses:
- Gardening - 10 Users;
-Waitressing – 8 Users;
- Kitchen Helpers – 8 Users.

Aims:
To provide the target population with residential support in a protected
and rehabilitating environment.
To promote dignified quality of life and, at the same time, stimulate
participation and responsibility in daily life tasks and the community.

Support residential community, to youth and adults with
severe psychiatric problems, clinically stable, who need
significant support, but that may have the potential
development by integrating a psychosocial rehabilitation
program.
Total 14 users

Psychosocial rehabilitation equipment for persons with mental health
disabilities in psychosocial disadvantage. It provides a range of activities
for skills training, occupational, recreational, educational, cultural and
social, in order to promote independence and quality of life.
The aim is to create individual plans of rehabilitation/integration.

mental health in order to participate in
some monitoring activities with users.

Promove-te Project will be suported by Health Minister and will start in next Summer,
during 1 year more.
The success pilot project had ran between Feb 2014 and Oct 2016, with the sponsor
of EEA Grants and Gulbenkian Foundation. ARIA was the promoter of a provision of
integrated care pilot project, clinical and psychosocial rehabilitation, through the
creation of a mobile team that deal with children and young people with mental health
problems between 10 and 25 years of age. This project is based on evidence that
early intervention in mental health problems allows a more favorable development
and reduce its impact on the disability and exclusion procedures.

ARIA Association is one of the entities, connected with Mental Health
problems, that have been invited by the Health Minister and Social Security
Institute to advance, already in this year of 2017 with the network of
continued care through 2 pilot projects, more precisely:
•Home support for 8 visits to mental health users per day;
•Unit Autonomy Training for 12 mental health users

ARIA Jardins Project of ARIA
is a Employment Project that
provide services to general
public and community as
gardening, plumbing and
domestic arrangements,
cleaning (home & offices)
and administrative services.

ARIA Jardins office is situated in Lisbon,
Alvalade at Centro Hospitalar Psiquiátrico de
Lisboa, CHPL , Pavillion 14.
Performs services throughout all the big area
of Lisbon, considering Cascais, Vila Franca de
Xira and Setúbal.

ARIA Jardins started his activity in April 2005.
In first year ARIA Jardins had employed five
people with Mental Health Problems, 4 people in
garden services and 1 administrative, with a
management team of 2 people.
During 10 years ARIA Jardins work as a social
firm with government support.
In 2015 all social firms in Portugal close.
So, we had continued our work changing our
name to Employment Project

Nowadays, after 12 years our project ARIA
Jardins counts with 25 people distributed by
21 disadvantaged psychosocial persons (
17 people with mental health problems, in
process of psychosocial and professional
recovery and 4 people with other problems
such as drugs addition, homeless and long
term unemployment), supervised by a
managing team with 4 people.

- At the begininng of ARIA Jardins project 83% of the capital obtained by
the project came from state subsidies. This situation in 2016 is completely
changed with only 34%, meaning that nowadays there is much less
dependence of project in relation to government funds and a big grow in
services

Difficulty of our workers in carrying out their work without
the guidance of those responsible;
- Lack of supported projects for the integration of people
with psychosocial disadvantage;
- Lack of government support;
- Little wrapping of the business fabric and society;
- Little firmness in social and social economy policies
with the Portuguese state

-Low dedication, willingness and responsiveness of the
users with mental health in the learning of is function.

- In 2011, some portuguese NGOs and Associations (ARIA, Artenave, A3S, Cais
Oporto and Soutelo Social Centre) created a important group called RESIT –
Business Network for Social Work Interventation, making the Promotion of
Portuguese Social Firms, Associations and Cooperatives in National and
European Level, which work with disadvantaged people.
- Since that period this project work as a kind of umbrella organisation, which also
include Cáritas Coimbra, AFUA, Major Municipality of Gondomar, ANARP -
Nova Aurora, ATNP, Associação Portas para a Vida, APDES and Silveirinhos
Association.

- In 2013 RESIT in which Association ARIA belongs, become member of a
important european organisation ENSIE – European network os Social
Inclusion Enterprises;
- In November 2014, ARIA Jardins brings to
European Parliament in Bruxelles 1 user
in the project IN WORK, with a
partnersheep between RESIT and
ENSIE´s Umbrella

- Since 1995 ARIA is a member of CEFEC - Social Firms Europe, and in October 2007
her project ARIA Jardins were recognized as Best Small European Social Firm in Linz.
-In July 2010, ARIA Jardins bring to Cambridge 3 users to CEFEC Social Firms Europe
Conference, beginning a essential interexchange and partnersheep with other
european NGO organisations.
- Between 2012 and 2014, ARIA develop the SET Reality project with CEFEC partners
from Greece, Lithuania, Romania, United Kingdom, Italy, Turquey and Austria that
allows the possibility of 12 users participate in a partnersheep mobility project knowing
other NGOs across the Europe.

- During 2010. ARIA become member of Mental Health Europe and bring
National Focal Point for Portugal. Position that ARIA maintain until today.
- Between June 2012 and May 2015 ARIA become also a Board Member of
MHE.

Why we should continuing this project ?
…. our work provides to disadvantaged employees a good level of
rehabilitation and socio-professional integration, helping people having a
better life;
….this work allow us to fight against stigma associated with mental health
diseases;
…we have already proove that this project is a very good example of best
practices in Mental Health issue
Only this encourage us to continue our job, that we love so much!
