Shabat Beha’alotecha
Hashem speaks to Aharon and describes the workmanship of the Menorah to him, and tells
him that the
lamps must give light towards the body of the candelabrum. – Hashem orders Moshe to purify the
sons of Levi, sprinkling upon them the waters of expiation, cleansing all their flesh and washing their clothes. –
They then shall take offerings to present to Hashem, after having come before Hashem, and after having the chil-
dren of Israel support their hands on the Leviyim. After this the Leviyim shall come to perform the service at the
Tent of Appointment, thus they will be entirely given to Hashem, instead of the firstborn sons of the Children of
Israel. Hashem informs the Leviyim that only those of twenty-five years of age to fifty may take part in the service.
On the first month of the second year of the exodus from Egypt, Hashem commands the Jews to make the Pesah offer-
ing on the fourteenth day of the month, and celebrate for the first time Pesah in the desert. – On the day that the Taber-
nacle was erected, a cloud in the shape of fire rose above the Tent. The Children of Israel would journey forth and would
encamp where the cloud settled, for as long as the cloud remained over the Tabernacle. On Hashem’s orders they remained
at the camp and on the order of Hashem they journeyed forth. – Hashem commands Moshe to make two silver trumpets, and
these shall serve for the calling of an assembly and for the lifting of the camps.
On the twentieth day of the second month in the second year, the cloud rose from above the Tabernacle and the Children of
Israel left the wilderness of Sinai, according to their groups. Upon the Ark travelling, Moshe would say: “Rise up Hashem and
may your enemies be dispersed and those that hate You, flee”. And when it came to rest, he said: “Come Hashem, to the myri-
ads of the thousands of Israel.” At that moment Moshe begged his father-in-law to stay with them.
The people began to complain, and Hashem heard it and his anger was kindled. Moshe, unable to tolerate the cries of all the
families complains to Hashem for having laid the burden of the entire nation upon him. Hashem tells Moshe then, to gather
seventy elders, and He will send meat to the nation, not for one day, but for a month.
The Perasha ends, by telling us that Miriam spoke badly about Moshe and criticized his wife to Aharon . Immediately Hashem
called them and reprimanded them for their bad actions and Miriam became leprous. Aharon and Moshe prayed to Hashem
that He forgive Miriam and that He heal her from her punishment for Lashon Hara.
Beautifying Misvot
Gemara in Baba Kama (p.9) discusses the value of “Hidur Misva”-to perform Misvot in a beautiful fashion, and not just fulfill the
minimal requirement. The Sefer Hasidim (Rabbenu Yehuda HaHasid of Germany, d. 1217, Siman129) elaborates on this princi-
ple, based on the Pasuk, “Kabed et Hashem MeHonecha-Honor Hashem with your wealth.” He says that just like one buys a
beautiful jewelry box to hold his valuables, so too one should buy a beautiful case for his Tefilin and holy books. This is the
source for buying a nice Tefilin and Tallit bag. If one stores his physical possessions nicely, how much more so he should keep
his spiritual ones.
On the other hand, in Siman 878 he writes that one should not delay performing a Misva until he is able to do so in a beautiful
way. For example, he shouldn’t pass up the opportunity to buy a simple Etrog or Sefer Torah, because he is holding out for a
special one. As soon as he is able to do the Misva, he should immediately seize the opportunity.
The Mishna Berura (Rav Yisrael Meir Kagan of Radin, 1839-1933, Siman 656:6) discusses the Gemara that says that one should
spend up to one-third more for the beautiful Misva. If one spends more, that is “G-d’s part.” He cites Rashi that explains that if
one spends even more than the required one third, he will receive the reward not only in the next world, but also in this world.
The Mishna Berura also brings an opinion that someone who is very wealthy should spend even more than one-third.
SUMMARY: It is better to seize the opportunity to perform a Misva in a simple manner than delay until it
can be performed beautifully

corner of light."

By Rabbi Eli Mansour
Rabbi Azulay: In the Keriyat Shema Al Hamita that we read be-
fore going to bed, we recite the 91st Perek of Tehilim, the Perek
of Yoshev Beseter Elyon. What's the connection to reading this
before one goes to bed?, Plus on Motsae Shabbat we read this
Perek as well but we add the Pasuk of ויהי נועםbeforehand and we
repeat the Pasuk of אורך ימיםtwice at the end; what is the
significance of this? This Psalm speaks about Hashems protec-
tion over the Jewish Nation from fear and from prosecuting an-
gels. That is why we recite this Perek while following the casket
of the deceased; in order that the prosecuting angels should be
eliminated and only the defending angels should speak. We
read this before we lay to sleep because we need more protec-
tion at night as night is represented by judgement, and sleep is
considered 1/60th of death. - If you count the words from ויהי
.you'll see that there are 124 wordsאורך ימים until the end ofנועם
Then when repeating the Pasuk of אורך ימיםonce more, like we do
on Motsae Shabbat, you've arrived at 129 words. 129 is the nu-
merical value of the words כלי זיןwhich means "weapons", to
teach us that this Perek is is a protection for us, just as a so-
phisticated weapon. Also, in the entire Perek of Yoshev Beseter
you'll notice that there isn't one letter זי"ן(which also means
weapon), to teach us that we don't rely on weapons to protect
us, just the protection of Hashem. - The key to getting this pro-
tection is hinted to at the beginning of the Perek. יושב בסתר
,"means "he who dwells in the shleter of the Supreme one עליון
this refers to the simple Jew who has put his entire faith in Ha-
shem and is a sincere servant to His will. That is someone who
easily merits to Hashems protection. - May it be His will that
Hashem protects all of Bnei Yisrael from all forms of evil and
may we soon see the Mashiach speedily in our days. Amen.

Rabbi Kadoch: One of the most fascinating stories in the Torah is the La-
shon Hara spoken by Miriam about her brother Moshe and her consequential
removal from the camp for 7 days due to her skin illness. One of the inter-
pretations discussed as to what she actually said includes her disbelief that
Moshe separated from his wife for so many years as he received prophecy.
She claimed that herself, Aharon and many others received Divine communi-
cation and yet they did not have to separate from their spouses. If this expla-
nation is true, then Miriam, was in fact looking out for her brother (and sister
in law), not god-forbid slandering them. Nevertheless, this was considered
Lashon Hara and punishment was necessary.
According to some explanations, Moshe was present when she said these
words. That is why the following Pasuk states "And Moshe is the most hum-
ble person from all persons on the face of the earth." Moshe could have
simply responded to her that his prophecy is much different than theirs. His
comes from a much higher place in Heaven. As a matter of fact, this re-
sponse is actually stated by Hashem when he reprimands her. Nonetheless,
in order that he didn't glorify himself in front of her and sound egotistical,
he chose to remain quiet and let "God do the talking."
Notice that the word ,עניוwhich means humble, is spelled without the "yud."
One of the reasons given for this is because Moshe (and Aharon) showed a
slight lack of humility in the story of the Mei Meriva (water from the rock).
Moshe claimed to the Jewish People "Can WE take water out of this rock?"
when he should have said "Can HE (God) take water out of this rock?" By
giving credit to himself, he lost the letter "yud" in the word .עניו
Another explanation is that the word "anav" spelled without a "yud" can be
pronounced "Anu" (they answered). When Bene Yisrael saw that Moshe was
standing right there hearing Lashon Hara about himself and chose to remain
silent, all of them exclaimed "And Moshe is the most humble person from all
persons on the face of the earth."
Humility is learned from three Jewish figures in history: Avraham, David and
Moshe. Avraham compared himself to dust and ashes, David compared him-
self to a worm but Moshe took it one step further; he compared himself to
nothing. That is why the word מאדis used in the aforementioned pasuk, for
otherwise it is extra; to teach us that his level of humility was one level high-
er than both Avraham and David's. The acronym of the word מאד
is דוד. אברהם משה Moshe is listed first. This explains why in Pirke Avot we are
requested to act in "very lowly spirit" - .מאד מאד הוי שפל רוחThe Mishna precedes
the teaching with the words .מאד מאדHow should we act? Like :מאדMoshe,
Avraham and David. Shabbat Shalom
