Acting Mayors Report

I have the privilege of doing the Mayors Report while Peter Darr is away.

In all the travelling that I have done, it is a pleasure to return to Robe and see how the town is developing, yet still retaining a harmonious balance between the historic charm and the new buildings. It is nice to see the door complete on the Customs House and special thanks are due to Ian Bruce for his efforts.

With respond to the Marina, ratepayers seem not to be aware that a working plan of the Marina is on the window of the Robe Marina Office at Lake Butler. Moreover Peter Duffy is very willing to answer questions when he has the office open. Equally informative is the newsletter about the Marina Corporation activities that Malcolm Kentish will be shortly distributing to all ratepayers.

Peter Wilkin Council Elections Councils are part of the democratic framework of Australia. The community elects their Council Members every four years. The next Council Elections will be held in November 2006.

Sporting and Community Assistance Program The District Council of Robe has established the Sporting and Community Assistance Program to provide financial assistance to sporting, recreation and community organisations within the Council area. It is anticipated that the funds sought will exceed the funds available, and therefore applications will be assessed against the following criteria.

• Ability of the organisation to achieve the objectives of the assistance program. • The projects ability to improve the existing sporting facilities. • The contributions offered by the organisation towards the project. • The overall effect of the project in relation to the town with respect to the provision of sporting facilities to locals and tourists. • The need to ensure financial stability of the organisation. • The degree to which the proposed project will assist the organisation. • The positive impact the project will have on the youth of the area.

Applications will be received on the Application Form up to 5pm Friday 29th September 2006 and to be assessed at the October Council Meeting. Advice to successful organisations will be forwarded after the Council meeting.

For Application Forms and further information contact the Chief Executive Officer, Rob Kay on 87682003.

Who said “computers rule the world” Recently I found an article which said “How to make your computer as easy to use as your telephone….” and “How come it’s so easy for Grandma?”……. Well you just had to read on with an opening like that…..didn’t you? Here’s why….It begins with the assumption that you know nothing about computers. Every step is explained in plain English….there’s no confus-ing computer jargon. You’ll learn how to go anywhere in the world! In-stantly!”the world wide web” at your finger tips. You’ll learn how to acquire software FREE. How to create and send messages to people around the world. Learn financial planning…workable budget…send family photos FREE. Learn a secret way to get FREE stereo sta-

tions from around the world…..on line! Create files, short cuts, ad-dress books, create posters and greeting cards! Talk to anyone anywhere in the world FREE for up to 15 minutes……and in small print “you’re welcome to try the course in your own home. No conditions, 100% money back guarantee. Computer Book

$24.90”……guess what, we have a great computer book for borrowing which addresses many of these computer thrills or better still please come into the Library and register your interest in participating in a computer course which we would like to plan for Adult Learners Week. Your expres-sion of interest is invited now. August has been children’s month with lots of interesting science theme things to enjoy with Professor Rob Morrison visiting Robe Primary School, Kingston Community School and Kangaroo Inn Area school. Professor Rob Morrison OAM, The President of Royal Zoological Society, writer of many science text books and the Curiosity Show Man…a total fascinating experience to meet and talk with him and his wife Penny, a textile de-signer and quilter. I was disappointed I did not get a chance to see his show but the children’s reports are as fol-lows: - “We learnt how to blow a raspberry”……how inter-esting! With a little more prompting…. “I learnt that there are different ways you need to “make a raspberry” to play wind instruments on different length and size pipes.” “We learnt how to make musical instruments too.” August was also Children’s Book Week and the Robe Pri-mary school has the privilege of having the books and the resource ideas for a month. It will be interesting to see what book reports filter back from the different year levels. Books and more books were the focus ….my daughter and husband have just returned from Samoa where they taught in a village school with little resources. The Robe Primary

We would like to thank the District Council of Robe, Robe Tourism and Traders and the Women in Black for helping to sponsor the making of a Chinese Dragon, which will be making it’s debut at the Christmas Parade on the 17th December 2006.

A big thank you to Kurt Florimond for his assis-tance in getting the project off the ground. Kurt’s artistic and creative knowledge during the making of the dragon was much appreciated.

We would like to thank everyone involved in help-ing to apply for the grant and to the 23 people who gave up their time to participate in the con-struction of the dragon - thank you.

Robe Tourism & Traders Association

NEWS

Spring is Here! At Robe Tourism & Traders, we love the arrival of Spring. For Spring &September heralds the beginning of a new year as such for the Robe Tourism & Traders Associa-tion - on September 7 the association will hold it’s AGM, it’s a time of reflection and celebration of the successes over the past 12 months, and the plan-ning of the next 12 months and beyond. As you would all be aware from your own holiday-ing experiences - there are some very exciting tourism destinations right throughout Australia to be discovered. - Destinations that are vying for our visitors, and our visitors $$$$.

Planning Ahead: As an association we are very aware of this and planning ahead is vital if we are to stay ahead for the other destinations. With this in mind the Association has put together a Busi-ness & Marketing Plan that will provide a working document to guide the association through the next 12 months and into 2008.

Marketing: The Association has just finalized a joint advertising campaign with the local Caravan Parks to promote Robe throughout Australia in the Caravanning Australia guide, and we are currently discussing more joint television coverage with Limestone Coast Tourism in Western Victoria.

Robe Village Fair & the Discover Robe month are not far away, and as always the hard working committees of both these events have put together a fantastic variety of activities to excite all ages.

Chinese Dragon workshops: held in the Robe Institute in August were extremely well attended, and a big THANK YOU to the hardworking volun-teers of the Robe community who have brought life to the dragon and our Chinese heritage.

A Sad Farewell: On September 11 we farewell Peter & Lesley Wilkin, who have contributed so much to the Robe Tourism & Traders Association, and promoting Robe as a holiday destination. I know that the township of Robe will miss them both in so many ways, and I would like to thank Peter & Lesley for their unconditional commitment to Robe over the many years.

On Sunday 30th July 2006, one hundred (100) friends, relatives and visitors attended the ROBE Golf Club, to support the Police Day.

After breakfast (Crumpets) sponsored by Mark Muir from TIP TOP Bakery Naracoorte, eighty – six (86) golfers commenced the two (2) ball Ambrose competition. New Indian Opening Batman Sec Dean ‘Woody’ Woodward was warming up and praying for a better day. Hmmmmmmmm, Hmmmmmmmm. Many swings, duff hits, laughs and the magi-cal words were heard from the 10th & 3rd tees as many golfers had not pulled out the drivers for many years or never had a hit. A noted drive off the 10th Tee was by sponsor Michael Loiterton from FSP who in fact is a committee member at Blackwood G.C. (H/C 17) hit his drive 15 meters, crossing the roadway straight into a planter box. Lucky for Mr. Magoo alias Nippy, he just moved his Rolls Royce from his great parking position, (in front of the 1st & 10th Tee).

The day was mard by inclement weather. One would say that there were more than female & male cracks of thunder, lighten-ing and torrential rain. The AIS track & field team would have been proud of the PBs as golfers turned into track stars.

Sponsor Robe Hardware/Club President Graham Clements was a welcome relief driving his Magna sedan hastily from the Club house along the 2nd fairway towards Sponsor Terry Mulraney from SA Police Credit Union whom put up a $250.00 Hole – In - One for the 16th hole calling the competition off due to the in-clement conditions and not that the hole-in-one was still safe. At this time most golfers had used the Over-length Drivers, The Beer Googles and the Bicycle Handle Putter and was well into having or should I say had a great time????? Sponsor Batman (Graham & Cheryl Pollard) from Pelican Houseboats Berri had the little golf cart servicing the golfers with tea, coffee and Home made fruit cake from Balmoral mayoress Toby Salter. Talk about Robbery at High Noon, (It’s more like robbery at the 14th hole) by Dicky Salter and Wozza Tucker. You will see wanted posters on lamp posts near you soon. Fantastic job, Robin Hood would be proud.

Panic stations surfaced when No sandwiches had been arranged but thanks to Cyclone Tracey, Sponsor Marilyn & Michael Loi-terton, Cheryl Pollard, Postie Claire Delaine, Audrey Laurie, Balmoral Mayoress Toby Salter & butter fingers Batman this task was completed.

Lunch was a mixture of lamb on the spit donated by Andrew Goldsworthy bangers, & cube roll professionally prepared by Chef Whisker Giles, Hunter and Gatherer Rooter Ludwig , Sun-tanned Surfie Warren Ludwig and overseer Phil Tanner & Mr Magoo.

All meats were married up with salads the Robe Golf Club ladies prepared, thanks to Wendy Leopold and Helen Lynch for coor-dinating the lunch spread. A special thanks to all who assisted in the kitchen, all golfers appreciate your efforts. Xxxx

Saturday afternoon saw the visit of Sponsor Bill & Bill (Jr) from Morris Bakery, Naracoorte with the afternoon tea which caused the mud flaps of there vehicle to drag on the bitumen. VICpol members Sea Hunt ‘Chuck’ Keating, Peter ‘Kerrie Webb’ Mailes & Geoff ‘Popeye’ Barcham, survived Kangaroo alley Penola/Casterton Rd, wiped the sleep from there eyes, carried on like last week at Bal-moral Police Charity Golf Day.

Mount Benson Angling Club Update

Obviously salmon knew that our first competition was for them. David Pritchard and Shaun Hill trav-eled from Adelaide after hearing reports of catches at the Gums. It was great to catch up with them

again. With schools staying well out behind the surf breaks at the Gums, baits disappeared and crabs seemed the most active. Although ten vehicles lined the beach on Saturday evening (some interstate and some club

members) catches were elusive. Two members fished Longbeach catching good salmon around 2.4kg, some fished Stinky Bay for salmon and mullet and others fished the Gums. Robert Pitt landed the heaviest salmon 2.8kg. Our out of competition saw Spanner producing a Salmon at 2.880kg only for Mick Tonkin out catching and weighing one at 3.171kg. One angler braved the very wet and thundery Sun-day a few weeks ago and persistence paid off by catching 8 bream one just over the 1kg mark.

Next competition in September is for most varieties.

See you on the beaches or at the BBQ.

Robe Golf Club News The feature event for this month

was the Police Charity Day. To say that the day had everything would be an understate-ment! The weather was unbelievable. At various stages we had it sunny, cloudy, windy, very windy, very very windy, drizzly and rainy. Then we were all able to enjoy be-ing pelted by hailstones. The final “coup de grace” was the arrival of thunder and lightning, bringing a premature ending to the golf. Spir-its undeterred everyone retired to the clubhouse to engage in much “hospitality”.

Congratulations to Dave Clarke and his help-ers for organising the day. Over $3000 was raised for charity which was fantastic, as was the large number of people who played. Not everyone was able to enjoy all of the novelty strokes around the course but they were well received - the placement of the hole in the slope in the 9th, the hole not on the green on the 5th, the broomstick driver on the 8th, the bike handle putter on the 14th, and who could forget the distorting goggles on the 15th!

Shot of the month goes to a certain greens-keeper who I shall call “Bob” to mask his identity. As we know putting is not his strength. However he showed his hidden tal-ent with an unbelievable putt at the 14th on Police Charity Day. Using the bike handle putter with aplomb he calmly sink a 5m putt across the slope, with the shot never in doubt.

The men winners for this month were Brenton Hole, Ryan Dew (monthly medal) and Bill Quinlan - Watson. I don't have the ladies re-sults on hand so I am unable to publish them this time.

That’s all for now
