Interviews for broadcast: What questions should you ask?-prepare as much as you can in advance – research the subject-5 Ws: WHAT WHY WHEN WHERE WHO and HOW-open-ended questions-challenge question – accountability, emotion, reflection, surprise -follow a narrative leading from the past (context) to the present-Is there anything else you’d like to add?

Other tips for broadcast interviews:

-don’t speak while subject is speaking but you can use body language to show you are engaged, to respond-use your own personal style, maintain respect-sometimes silence is effective!-don’t pre-judge -a conversation

Using Quotes or clips in your story

-for emotional impact, lively language-for accountability – using the person’s exact words to put them on the record-for accuracy, letting people speak for themselves-to emphasize the person’s viewpoint-do not repeat the quote in your story, but lead into the quote-make sure the quote’s meaning is clear-not at the beginning of the story-attribute your quotes/clips-a quote reflects someone’s personal opinion or an emotion that would be harder or less effective for you to paraphrase – if you can’t put it in better words or make it more concise yourself, then use the quote!
