Maxine DeHartMaxine DeHart needs little introduction in the Okanagan. She juggles 3 jobsand numerous Board postings along with a social life that would be the envyof many and exhaust most! A Kelowna City Councillor, Sales Director atthe Kelowna Ramada Hotel and Straight from DeHart columnist. Her list ofaccolades and honours is too long to list…hence the reason we are here.

A long-time supporter of United Way, and a passionatecommunity advocate. Last year marked the

grand finale of the Maxine DeHart RamadaHotel Drive Thru. The Drive Thru has raised

over $850 000 for the Central Okanagancommunity! After that incredible journey,Max decided to step away from theDrive Thru – a well-deserved break. However, Max and United Way continueto have discussions on partnering toraise money for the community.

We are so proud to be able to honourMaxine, her sponsors and volunteers after

20+ years. And so happy she agreed to be onthe hot seat!

Phil Johnson

For four hours a day, five days a week, Phil Johnson is themorning show host at AM1150 - News/Talk - Kelowna. In those 4hours he will have between 8 and 12 conversations...speaking topoliticians, musicians, authors, inventors, housewives, businessowners, sports personalities… in addition to Daniel O’Harahis producer, and Ted Farr who anchors the news portion ofthe program. That’s a whole lot of talk. Politics, business, life, lives, the deeply personal and human stories, little stories aboutpeople being people, all are deeply fascinating.

These days people ask, when are you going to retire? Theanswer…when you have “the best job in the world,” would youretire? He’s honoured to be one of those chosen to” roast”Maxine DeHart… an iconic figure in this place we all call home.

The Roasters PanelRick Webber

Rick Webber recently retired from a career inbroadcasting that spanned more than forty years. After nearly 29 years as the face and voice ofGlobal Okanagan News, Rick signed off as anchorin July.

Rick was born in Winnipeg, but as the child ofan air force officer, he moved extensively acrossCanada. Rick moved to BC in 1978, where hemade the switch from programming to news. After working at several radio and TV stations

Having lived all across the country, Rick quickly realized the Okanagan is the bestplace in Canada to live (and motorcycle) and he never left. Rick is now enjoyinga break from the rigid deadlines of broadcasting, and has been keeping busyemceeing community events, and even roasting the occasional city councillor...:)

Loyal WooldridgeEntrepreneur and community advocate Loyal

Wooldridge was the only fresh face elected to

Kelowna City Council amongst 8 incumbents

in 2018. The 33-year-old local business owner

said it felt surreal as the results started

coming in, showing he might win a position

on council.

Loyal owns and operates Loyal Hair on St.

Paul Street. Growing up in Creston in an

RCMP household, he’s lived in Kelowna since 1993 graduating

from Mount Boucherie Secondary School before opening his

business at the age of 21.

In his role as an elected official, with a strong business mind and

compassionate social heart he is excited to encourage the City

of Kelowna to grow in a responsible, sustainable way that future

generations will be proud of.

Kelowna gave Ryan their vote ofconfidence and elected him toCity Council, Nov 15th, 2014. Manyyears before he moved to Canadafrom Scotland in 1991. He feels weoften forget as Canadians just howtough it is to become Canadian. Itis a gift he cherishes and it driveshim to fight for the best for ourcommunity daily. He has had theopportunity to work with children

with disabilities as a CEA at SD#23 and the Okanagan Boys and Girls Clubs. He has shared his home with an adult with disabilities for the past 14 yearsunder a contract with CLBC, and now runs the Creekside Theatre (in theGeorge Elliot High School) as his day job.

Over the past decade he’s had the gift of creating or programming some ofthe most loved cultural events we have in the Central Okanagan including:Music in the Park, West Kelowna, Pianos in Parks , Arts on the Avenue,Buskers on Bernard, New York New Years, Kelowna, and Winter BluesFestival, Lake Country

His passion for arts and culture is rooted in my career as a singer/songwriter.He is married to Kimberly Donn and he lives in a nook of Kelowna behindthe airport with his two daughters, Bella and Lyla. He ran a boutique socialmedia marketing business, Nudge Media, for a few years before joiningKelowna City Council & that skill has been very helpful as he aims to stayconnected to his supporters. https://www.facebook.com/ryandonnkelowna/

It’s a dog’s breakfast, it’s a mixed bag,no, it’s a train wreck. Those are the kindsof terms we use to describe the kindsof things that hit the stage at this localcomedy scene, so it’s no surprise it hastaken the name, Train Wreck Comedy. It started as an open mic comedy showevery Wednesday night in downtownKelowna at O’Flannigan’s.

Rob Balsdon came at Train Wreck ona pretty fast track himself. At age 19,he would drive from his hometown,Newmarket, Ont., to Toronto, about anhour each way, just to go on stage for

five minutes. He’s been all across Canada, as an emcee, middle actand in the last few years he’s been headlining comedy clubs fromcoast to coast. He’s worked with some of the top performers in thebusiness, sharing the stage with comedy greats such as Brent Butt(Corner Gas) and Gerry Dee (Mr. D). Balsdon sees Kelowna as agreat town for comedy.

Rob is now the proud Daddy-O to a beautiful baby girl born JUSTTWO WEEKS AGO!! Harper and Mom Amanda are doing greatand allowed Dad to escape the diapers for a few hours to be ourspecial guest MC for tonight!

Maxine was one of the firstpeople in the community I metwhen I started with the CapitalNews in late August of 2000.It was during the time whenplanning for that year’s DriveThru breakfast were in fullswing. My publisher at the time,Richard Sadick, wanted me tocome with him to a breakfastmeeting for the drive-thru andmeet Max. When we talkedabout this in the midst of thenewsroom there was nervouslaughter from my co-workersand some of that “Are you readyfor this?” snickering going on forpoor unsuspecting me.

The general consensus backthen is Max was not someoneyou just met, she was someonewho had to be experienced, kind of like a hurricane in a fineChina shop.

So Richard and I walked intothe Ramada meeting room, with me looking to have myfirst introduction to Max. BeforeI could really react, this short

blond-haired woman camerunning toward me, armsreaching out and proceeded toplant a welcome kiss right onthe lips. It caught me off-guardbecause even my parents, never mind my relatives, evergreeted me like that. If I thoughtabout it that much beforehand,I would have expected somesort of casual hug or shakingof my hand, welcoming me toKelowna. But nope, she greetedher new Capital News boss ina way that I have seen her domany times since to others.

You get pulled into thathurricane, and you realizequickly it’s a pretty good place tobe accepted.
