PERFORMANCE SCHEDULE !!IMPROVISAO - FARRUQUITO Y COMPAÑÍA MONDAY, JUNE 9TH 8:00PM • University of New Mexico, Rodey Theatre • $30, $40, $60, $75 Farruquito reflects the truth and roots of flamenco at his highest level. In the artist's own words, “Improvisao is a return to my roots and a sample of what I've learned in this profession. Singing, guitar and dance are fused with total freedom to create a different show every day." This is a show that transports us to a traditional and magical universe. It is an art in the celebration of life, in which the dancer and his musicians are the center of the artistic creation without any artifice and with improvisation as a leitmotiv. With his scenic proposal, Improvisao, Farruquito returns to the essence of an intimate, authentic and visceral flamenco. His vision is one in which the artists shed every scenic trick to bare themselves in a heroic attempt to be fused with the public through improvisation.

RETOrno - LA LUPI Y COMPAÑÍA TUESDAY, JUNE 10th 8:00PM • University of New Mexico, Rodey Theatre • $30, $40, $60, $75 In this concert, La Lupi faces a retorno (a return) as well as a reto (a challenge). RETOrno is the combination of a lifetime of work and a look at the past. It is a nod to the bailes of yesteryear and to flamenco done on front porches among neighbors. La Lupi emulates this age-old style of dancing in search of the beauty of minimalism and for the mastery of finely executed flamenco. Looking back at the most deeply rooted folklore and the most time-honored flamenco movement, La Lupi pays homage to the bata de cola, the mantón, and to baile with the sombrero Cordobés. While staying true to her own personal style developed over many years, La Lupi once again undertakes a journey down a new path to collect long-established traditions of dance and to combine them with a flamenco that is new and fresh. "At this time, a need to RETURN so I can continue to move forward." -La Lupi

¡AY! - EVA LA YERBABUENA Y COMPAÑÍA WEDNESDAY, JUNE 11th 8:00PM • National Hispanic Cultural Center, Albuquerque Journal Theatre • $30, $40, $60, $75 "I will miss one shadow, one dream...maybe the uncertain feeling of having lived the next second without now...I learned from a beggar that in spaces among dreams are the names of all those things that are nameless by being invisible. And they can be seen, heard, touched...felt, if you take notice. They are only syllables, words, that everyone has pronounced without knowing their meaning; and they are looking to be breathed in vain, feeling that there is someone in the world who has named them, felt them, lived them just for a while.” - Eva Yerbabuena !TENDENCIAS - ALFONSO LOSA Y COMPAÑÍA THURSDAY, JUNE 12th 8:00PM • University of New Mexico, Rodey Theater • $30, $40, $60, $75 "At a time when flamenco is being displaced by an unchecked merging of forms, I put forth my grievance of this circumstance through dance. From my hunger for constant creative growth and with the deepest reverence for the roots of flamenco, arises Tendencias." – Alfonso Losa

A concert that is not defined within the current evolution of flamenco, Tendencias finds expression across a captivating range of dance forms while retaining the integrity of each. Citing a clear purpose, Losa gathers various approaches to dance and unites them with the distinct sensibility of flamenco. Within Tendencias, Losa presents a cast holding profound artistic, technical, and cultural knowledge to meet this artistic challenge head on.

“Wanting to evolve in flamenco while preserving it is my challenge. There are precedents that must be upheld; not just anything is viable." - Alfonso Losa !FIESTA FLAMENCA, GALA PERFORMANCE FRIDAY & SATURDAY JUNE 13TH & 14th 8:00PM • National Hispanic Cultural Center • $40, $50, $60, $70, $90 Fiesta Flamenca is a star-studded evening of music and dance, illustrating the range and dynamic styles presented in Festival Flamenco. In a spectacular display of the most powerful and energetic flamenco, each headlining artist of Festival Flamenco 27, along with Yjastros: The American Flamenco Repertory Company, share the stage for an evening of unforgettable music and dance! Elegance, sophistication, and physical brilliance challenge the audience to experience flamenco in all of its forms. Juxtaposing heritage and innovation, this vibrant display of artistry can be found in the distinct characteristics of flamenco.

WORKSHOP DESCRIPTIONS !

Students study colocación (placement), estilización (stylization), posturas (postures), brazeo (armwork), floreo (handwork), vueltas (turns), taconeo (footwork), and compás (phrasing). !Patadas por Bulerías y Tangos Intermediate/Advanced Students learn to improvise in a juerga (social) setting. The class will place emphasis on the cante as the guide. It will begin with simple phrases and develop them into more sophisticated patadas, always keeping a connection to the cante. !Castanets This technique class examines the placement and execution of correct castanet work.  Exercises will be given to develop articulation, coordination, speed, and musicality. The use of the mantón brings a feminine and elegant feel to the dance, it is also a visual element that can de used to accentuate body line and movement. The use of the mantón is a rigorous technique that adds to a dancers strength and artistry. !

MUSIC Flamenco Cante This class is valuable for all flamenco students. It is not necessary to be an experienced singer. Letras (verses) will be studied from various palos (song forms and rhythms) to familiarize the singer, dancer, or guitarist with the various forms, styles and intricacies of Flamenco Cante. !Flamenco Guitar Beginning, Intermediate, Advanced Students will learn compositions, strumming and fingering technique, and strengthen their rhythm and compás. These courses give students the skills to accompany dance and song, as well as develop solo repertoire.  Students will study various techniques and studies appropriate to the workshop level.  !Flamenco Cajón In this percussion class students will learn techniques for playing the cajón (percussion box) for various flamenco palos (song forms and rhythms).  Students will learn or refine their awareness of rhythmic patterning, time and “swing” (soniquete) in this course.  Cajóns will be available to buy and rent. !Palmas In this class the student will study the intricacies of the rhythmic hand clapping and “swing” that is the basis for all flamenco song, dance and music.  The student studies time structure and phrasing in flamenco and investigates the nuance that gives the rhythm life.  This is a must course for all students of flamenco.
