March 2013 Issue 3
Spring has arrived
with the promise of
warmer temperatures,
open windows, and
outdoor activities. I
would like to take this
opportunity to thank
the students, parents,
faculty and staff of Avon
Lake High School for a
successful year thus
far. Spring sports and
activities such as
baseball, softball, track,
choir and band
concerts; have kept
many of our students
busy. Students are
already busy trying
out for activities for
next school year such
as: Class Officers,
Merples, Flag Corp, and
Cheerleading.
As our seniors are in
their last semester of
high school and working
towards their future,
and our underclassmen
are working towards
a new school year,
they all are faced with
new pressures and
challenges. Students, here
are some words to
think about from Ralph
Waldo Emerson, “Unless
you try do something
beyond what you have
already mastered, you will
never grow.” Please be
sure to take advantage
of the many technological
communication tools that
we use including: GBW
(GradeBookWizard); Avon
Lake District and Avon
Lake High School website
(avonlakecityschools.org);
Avon Lake High School
Facebook, and Avon Lake
High School Twitter account
listed as AvonLakeHS.
Each newsletter includes
a “SPOTLIGHT ON
STUDENTS” section. If
there is something your
son/daughter is involved in
that deserves recognition,
please share your good
news and mail it to the main
office to the attention of
Mrs. Liesa Wetzig, or have
your son/daughter drop it
off.

25% of teens attended a party where alcohol was served to underage youth in the past two months, while parents thought the number was closer to 15%. (Source: Parents Who Host, Lose The Most: Don’t be a party to teenage drinking Evaluation Report, January 2007)
Every day, 5,400 young people under 16 have their first drink of alcohol. (Source: Center on Alcohol Marketing and Youth with calculations from Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, 2004 National Survey on Drug Use and Health)
Studies reveal that alcohol consumption by adolescents results in brain damage – possibly permanent – and impairs intellectual development. (Source: Alcoholism: Clinical and Experimental Research *Volume 24, Number 2 National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, February 2000)
Children who are drinking alcohol by 7th
grade are more likely to report academic problems, substance abuse, and delinquent behavior in both middle and high school. By young adulthood, early alcohol use was associated with employment problems. (Source: Ellickson P., Tucker J., and Klein, D. Ten-year prospective study of public health problems associated with early drinking. Pediatrics 111(5):949-955, 2003)
What parents should know:
As a parent, you cannot give alcohol to your teen’s friends under the age of 21 under any circumstance, even in your own home, even with their parent’s permission.
You cannot knowingly allow a person under 21, other than your own child, to remain in your home or on your property while consuming or possessing alcohol.
If you break the law:
You can face a maximum sentence of six months in jail and a $1,000 fine.
Others can sue you if you give alcohol to anyone under 21, & they, in turn, hurt someone, or damage property.
Law Enforcement can confiscate any alcohol, money or property used in committing the offense.
Things you can do as a parent:
Refuse to supply alcohol to anyone under 21.
Be at home when your teen has a party.
Make sure alcohol is not brought into your home or property by your teen’s friends.
Talk to other parents about not providing alcohol at events your child will be attending.
Create alcohol-free opportunities and activities in your home so teens will feel welcome.
Report underage drinking to local law enforcement.

Congratulations to the Avon Lake High School String Orchestra on receiving a Superior (1) rating at the Ohio
Music Education Association State Orchestra Adjudicated Event, which was held at Lakewood High School on
Saturday, February 23rd! The orchestra played three prepared pieces for ratings & comments from three judges,
and then sight-read a piece of music that they had never seen before for a rating from one judge. The ALHS
String Orchestra, directed by Dawn Kulikowski, received a Superior rating for the first time in school
history. 2012 was the first year that our orchestra attended this event.

were recognized for their debating abilities. Zach Fechter and Jonathan
Shabab received verbal commendations for their portrayal of Papua New
Guinea in the UN Economic and Financial Council. Verbal commendations
are among the most prestigious awards presented at the conference and are
earned by delegates who exhibit superior skills throughout the conference.
2500 students from 118 schools attended the MUNUC conference. Some of the home countries of the schools
attending the conference are: China, India, The United Kingdom, Mexico, and Honduras. The conference was
held from February 7 through February 10, 2013.
The Performin’ Shoremen will present the hip-shakin’, jukebox musical, All Shook Up, on April 18th-21st.
Inspired by and featuring the songs of Elvis Presley, a sad, square town is turned upside down when a
guitar-playing roustabout, Chad (played by senior, Tom Sweeney), rides in on his motorcycle looking for a
mechanic. The mayor’s strict rules against loud music and indecent behavior are broken as Chad touches an old
jukebox, and it comes to life.
Seeking love and adventure, Natalie (played by senior, Rachel Van Scyoc), the only female mechanic, dreamed
of running away until she instantly falls in love with Chad. Little does she know that her best friend, Dennis
(played by sophomore, Connor Sweeney), has had a secret crush on her for years. Wanting to learn how to earn
Natalie’s love, Dennis becomes a side kick for Chad, and double checks that they aren’t getting too close.
Getting a similar idea, Natalie dresses up as “Ed” and befriends Chad as a man to convince him to date her.
Meanwhile, Chad encourages the citizens to take chances and follow their dreams while trying to smooth-talk
the sultry museum curator, Sandra (played by senior, Meryl Juergens). A hot commodity in town, Sandra is also
pursued by Natalie’s widowed father, Jim (played by senior, Dylan Bomba), but she is captivated by “Ed”.
Mayor Matilda (played by senior, Mikhaila Rice) is not happy about the new chaos in her town, and especially
upset with the new love connection between her son, Dean (played by
sophomore Jack McDonough), and a girl from the lower social class, Lorraine
(played by junior, Rebekah Dovci). The townspeople struck with love escape to
the abandoned fairgrounds to hide from Matilda’s harsh punishments.
This tangle of love stories that'll have you jumping out of your blue suede shoes
features classics such as "Heartbreak Hotel," "Jailhouse Rock," and
"Don't Be Cruel." Encouraging audiences to follow their dreams and take
chances, All Shook Up will run April 18-20, 2013 at 7:00p.m. and Sunday,
April 21, 2013 at 2:00p.m. For tickets call 440-930-8639.
