Collies embarrassed Dapto at home last weekend, beating the struggling Canaries team in emphatic fashion. The Dogs did it easy, running away 44-6 winners against an out of form Dapto side..With Dapto looking to get their third win for the year, and Collies aiming to bounce back from a woeful seventh round loss to the Butchers, last Saturday’s game was set to be a close encounter. In the opening five minutes Collies were gifted a penalty on halfway, setting up camp in Dapto’s end of the field early in the piece. With the ball in hand on the 30m line, Collies looked poised to score, and if not for some desperate Andrew Madden defence, Jarryd Hogan would have had the Dogs’ first try of the afternoon. Dapto defended well on their line however, and held Collies out - momentarily. Failure to kick on the last tackle of the following set cost Dapto dearly, and before the side had time to get past the finishing post of the greyhound circuit, Collies had crossed the stripe through Jarrod Thompson. Shortly after Thompson’s try, Peni Botika and Jimmy Storer combined to get Collies back down in Dapto’s end of the field, and winger Adam Bouris was the major benefactor from the pair’s hard running, scoring in the corner. In the 13th minute, a long cut-out pass by Dapto’s Cameron Bruest gave the home side a glimmer of hope as Blake Spencer sprinted down the sideline, however referee Michael Chin called the pass forward, much to the disapproval of the vocal home crowd.Dapto’s Jake Anelzark backed up Bruest’s flare with some hard hitting and determined running through the middle corridor of the field. Anelzark’s force was met by some bone rattling Collies’ defence though, through Peni Botika.Collies then scored the next two tries relatively easily. The
second of the pair was impressive though, as Collies’ Mark Asquith gifted Leonard Ropeta a try under the sticks, making the score 20-0. As the standard of heckling from the sideline reached new lows, so too did Dapto’s on field performance, and when the home side gave away their sixth penalty of the afternoon, half time was the only thing that could have saved them. Thankfully the hooter sounded and the sides went into the break with Collies ahead 20-0.Coach David Walsh gave his Dapto side the round’s of the kitchen in the halftime break as the side sat, heads bowed, at the western end of the Showground, Walsh urging his players to lift and produce some better football.Early in the half Dapto’s Michael Maslanka sprinted through the Collies’ line on halfway, and stepped past a handful of would-be tacklers. Stranded on the Dog’s 20m line, Dapto did what they had been doing for the previous 45 minutes - butchered a try scoring opportunity. They let Collies off the hook, and the Dogs scored the next two tries, converting them both to make the score 32-0.Blake Spencer scored Dapto’s only try of the afternoon off the back of a sneaky short kick off from Bruest. Bruest then converted the try from the sideline making the score 32-6. Collies then scored two more converted tries to finish the match 44-6, Ron Kissell scoring in the dying seconds of the match to put the icing on the cake for the Dogs.In the round’s other matches: Thirroul shocked Helensburgh, beating them 18-10; Wests smashed Shellharbour 40-0; and Corrimal scored 28 points and still managed to lose, going down 42-28 to Berkeley.Jared Constable

Barely a week goes by without something dramatic occurring in the media surrounding rugby league players, and the past few weeks have been no exception. The past few weeks have been filled with shocks: National Rugby League CEO David Gallop stood down as the figurehead of our code’s national body; Sam “Third-Man” Thaiday pulled out of the second State of Origin match; and the Tigers have won seven on the trot! One thing that isn’t shocking to see however, is that Illawarra are collecting accolades left, right and centre in the NSW RL scene. The Illawarra Under 15s side has made the CRL Cup Final to play against traditional rivals Newcastle at Morry Breen Oval Wyong this weekend. The Illawarra boys beat Groups 16, 9 and 20 at Dubbo a fortnight ago to earn their spot in the final. We wish all involved the best of luck and have no doubt that they will fly the Illawarra flag with pride.Another representative team flying the Illawarra flag with pride is the Illawarra Women’s side who last weekend won the NSW WRL State Club Championships held in Sydney. In the process of going through the tournament undefeated, Emma Tonegato, Samantha Hammond, Maddison Studdon, Emily Andrews, Tegan Chandler (Helensburgh), Talesha Quinn (Berkeley) and Malama Leatigaga (Wests) were all named in the NSW WRL team. Well done girls!Wests Illawarra’s Paora Kemp is making his way up the ranks in the CRL scene also, gaining selection in the 2012 CRL Southern side to take on their Northern rivals for selection in the NSW CRL side. The Illawarra Coal RL congratulates Paora on his achievement, and wishes him luck with his trial, which is set to take place at Morry Breen Oval, Wyong this Saturday. On a sour note, Illawarra’s charge for First Division CRL glory was dashed in the Country Championships, with our boys going down 29-22 to Central Coast at Wyong in the Qualifying final a fortnight ago. It was hoped that the Illawarra side would dispatch of the newly formed Central Coast side, however this year signals the first time in at least seven years that an Illawarra Division side hasn’t been present in the CRL finals series.Watch this space for more representative updates.Jared Constable

Ladies League . . .Most of you would have heard by now the great success the Illawarra girls had at the State Club championships. They were certainly the surprise packet on the day especially to themselves. If enthusiasm could be bottled we would have a whole pallet on hand.No one could have prepared me for the eventual announcement of the State team and no one could have been more proud in that moment. Special thanks go to Cameron ‘Freddie’ Thurgate, Daniel Lacey and Rod Powell for taking their young charges and instilling the pride and belief in themselves and the scarlet and white jersey. Pam Goodridge and Nicole Beck were also on hand to see to their wellbeing as well as the backbone of the Illawarra Women’s League, Leann Andrews as their manager.Well done everyone!
