TransformationIn Tractate Rosh HaShanah in the Talmud, the rabbis have a fun debate over when a variety of biblical events took place. Rabbi Eliezer teaches that among the events that took place in the month of Tishri, it was on Rosh HaShanah that Joseph was released from prison in Egypt. (Talmud Rosh HaShanah 11a)
Why teach us this? What is the connection between Joseph’s release from prison and the celebration of the New Year?
From the moment his brothers sold him into slavery, Joseph was constantly struggling. First he was a servant to Potiphar, but after refusing his wife’s advances, Joseph was thrown in prison. And while he languished in prison, he interprets the dreams of the baker and the cup-bearer, but is forgotten until Pharaoh has dreams he can’t understand.
And then, in one day, it all changes. Joseph is brought up from the prison, given a bath and a change of clothes, and comes before Pharaoh to interpret his dreams. Joseph begins Rosh HaShanah a forgotten prisoner and ends the day
the second most powerful man in the world. The process of transformation often looks
quick and easy. One day, a cocoon opens and a beautiful butterfly emerges. But we know it took weeks of great effort from when the caterpillar spun the cocoon to when the butterfly is born. Transformations are always the result of journeys of work and time.
Joseph began his journey of transformation as a petulant, insolent young man who was the bane of his brothers’ existence. But through his struggles in Egypt he grows wise and understanding. He realizes that the greatness he dreams of will only come about by following the path God shows
him. While Rosh HaShanah was a day of sudden change, it was only through a long journey of struggle that Joseph was able to realize his transformation.
This year for all of us at Temple Beth El, we will realize what seems a sudden transformation. Passing through the doorway into our new Welcome Center, down the grand hall past our new Sisterhood Gift Shop, our Beit Midrash adult study center, our new Beck Family Chapel and new areas devoted to community and learning, we will arrive in the sacred space of the Singer Sanctuary to celebrate the New Year.
But this journey of transformation has been years in the making. From our original ideas of renovations born almost fifteen years ago, through the struggles of the Great Recession, to the last five years of careful planning, development,
design and construction, this Rosh HaShanah is the culmination of a long journey of transformation.
Watching a butterfly struggle to come out of the cocoon can be excruciating to watch. But it is that struggle that helps the butterfly squeeze the fluids from its nascent
body to allow it to fly. Without that struggle, the butterfly will never take wing.
So it was with Joseph, and so it is with us. Rosh HaShanah will be a day of transformation for us only if we are willing to struggle. If we use these days before the New Year to look hard at who we really are, and we endeavor to grow and change, then indeed Rosh HaShanah can be a day of release and transformation.
As we celebrate the New Year 5780, let us give thanks for the journey that has led us to the realization of years of dreams, and let this sacred moment launch our congregation and each of us on the next stage of our journey in life.
And then, in one day, it all changes... Joseph begins
Rosh HaShanah a forgotten prisoner and ends the
day the second most powerful man in the world.

A MESSAGE FROM THE TEMPLE PRESIDENT
BY MARK SUNSHINE TEMPLE BETH EL [email protected]
Our New Home Temple Beth El’s new buildings are awe inspiring.
I mean “WOW!!” What else can be said other than WOW!!
Six months ago, we expanded the Beck Family Campus and it remains the most inspiring educational campus in Florida.
And now that Phase Two construction has finished, the Schaefer Family Campus is one of the most stirring Jewish buildings found anywhere.
But, no matter how extraordinary these structures are, they are just buildings – mere brick, mortar and glass.
We need to convert these buildings into our home.
Already the Beck Family Campus is alive with the joyous sounds of parents and young children attending our Early Learning Center. And, when the smallest children go home, the campus is renewed with our elementary, middle and high school students and their parents, learning about ethics, religion and life.
Every day at the Schaefer Family Campus we enter and bring with us our most important possessions – family relationships, joys, sorrows,
aspirations, disappointments and successes. The Schaefer Family Campus is where
we celebrate baby namings, B’nai Mitzvah, weddings, anniversaries and birthdays.
It is a safe harbor from some of the roughest things in life as well. Congregants come here when they have suffered a loss and need a place to mourn, or need the wisdom and guidance of our Clergy when life, marriage, children or jobs aren’t going as planned.
The new Schaefer Family Campus buildings are constantly filled with congregants attending worship, classes, “Beyachad” — the new family learning program — or helping those less fortunate.
And, of course, both campuses are great places to make enduring friendships and have fun.
However, to make the most of our new facilities, we must be willing to give ourselves permission to leave cynicism at the front door and be inspired.
And inspiration begins right at the entrance to the new Schaefer Family Campus. The lobby wall immediately reminds everyone of what’s most
important – to love the stranger, love our neighbors as ourselves, and love God. Starting with a simple glance at the lobby entrance wall, we learn how to be better people today than yesterday and even better tomorrow than today.
And, that is the purpose of our beautiful new buildings — to inspire us to be the best that we can be and to live life to its fullest.
L’shana Tova. Wishing you all the best for a happy, healthy new year.
Meet Rabbi Amy Grossblatt Pessah BY RABBI DAN [email protected]
As a synagogue, Temple Beth El seeks to be many things to many people, but central to our mission is to inspire each of us to actively engage in pursuing spiritual growth.
To help us in that endeavor, Temple Beth El has recently engaged Rabbi Amy Grossblatt Pessah as a part-time adjunct member of our clergy team.
Rabbi Pessah is no stranger to Temple Beth El. She has taught in our adult education program for almost 20 years,
including leading a cohort of Adult Confirmation. In addition, she has served as an advisor to our Jewish Spirituality Task Force and was the featured leader of our Sisterhood Women’s Seder in 2018.
Enjoy the privilege of learning with her in our monthly Jewish Meditation series, and in several continuing education programs she will lead this year on Jewish Spiritual Parenting, Jewish Mysticism, and in other facets of our congregational life.
To make the most of our new facilities, we must be willing to give ourselves permission to leave
cynicism at the front door and be inspired.

Welcome NEW and returning MEMBERS
If you haven’t visited the Schaefer Family Campus recently, you will be pleasantly surprised when you arrive. The long awaited renovation of the main public spaces (Phase 2) made possible by the generosity of all who supported the Fulfilling the Promise Capital Campaign, is finally complete. We are thrilled with how everything turned out. Our members and guests will be welcomed to an inspiring and contemporary new building whose brilliance now matches the high level of excellence that has always taken place inside the walls.
Construction is also finally complete at the Beck Family Campus. The expansion of our west campus has allowed us to increase our Early Learning Center and Religious School
enrollment (six new classrooms), as well as provide a much needed multi-use space suitable
for assemblies, family worship services, indoor children’s play and party rentals. We built an additional playground to accommodate the increase in students, and a much-needed staff/teen lounge. The final county approvals for this project were secured in July 2019 and all spaces are now in use.
The final phase of the Fulfilling the Promise Campaign renovations (Phase 3) is the addition of the new administration building at the Schaefer Family Campus. This new building will span the south end of the existing Courtyard and will house all of the Schaefer Family Campus staff (Clergy, Mausoleum, Education, Administration and Finance) in one contiguous office area. This will allow for better collaboration and efficiency. Phase 3 also includes the renovation and beautification of what will remain of the courtyard, providing a lovely outdoor space suitable for worship services, life cycle events or pre-function party space when the weather is pleasant. Phase 3 also includes the expansion and renovation of the public restrooms in the hallway between the Social Hall and Atrium. This final phase of construction will be complete by the summer of 2020.
The final phase of the Fulfilling the Promise
Campaign renovations (Phase 3) is the
addition of the new administration building at the
Schaefer Family Campus.

Despite hunger, disease and slave labor, the Jewish inmates of Terezin held onto their humanity by staging plays, composing opera and using paper and ink to record the horrors around them.

Just as we attain greatest mental health in dealing with our neuroses, healthy relationships result from confronting prejudices openly. Using Deborah Lipstadt’s recently published “Anti-Semitism Here and Now” as our inspiration we will look at this painful topic.Rabbi Mark Winer was born in Utah, raised in Texas and graduated from Harvard. He was ordained at Hebrew Union College (HUC-JIR,New York) and received a Ph.D from Yale in sociology, contemporary Jewry, race and ethnic relations, sociology of religion, and social psychiatry. Beth El TalksSTORIES FROM OUR COMMUNITYYom Kippur AfternoonWednesday, October 9, 2019 at 1:30pmHoly Service – The Spiritual Power in Giving of our Lives Schaefer Family CampusFor thousands of years, Judaism has taught that we connect to God through sacrifice. Come and hear three inspiring stories of personal sacrifice, and learn how life is truly enriched when we give the gift of our selves.
BILL SCHWARTZ Lessons Learned from D-Day and ServiceSeventy-five years ago, thousands of young men stormed the beaches in Normandy and fought to repel the evil onslaught of Nazi aggression. Among
them was Bill Schwartz, who will share his experiences from that fateful day, and the lessons we all can learn from the service of the “Greatest Generation.”
LILIANA ABRAMSON Loving The StrangerGrowing up in Santiago, Chile, Liliana Abramson learned the values of family and care. Nine years ago, when Thelma Geetter, a single woman in the congregation with no family, began to decline with dementia, Liliana stepped in with extraordinary compassion and devotion to guide Thelma’s care and ensure her needs were met. Liliana will share her experiences of what it feels like to be and love the stranger.
RICHARD BLUESTEIN Building Sacred SpaceIn 2014, Temple Beth El called on Richard Bluestein, noted architect and artist, to lead the congregation’s renovations of the Schaefer Family Campus. For five years, Richard has poured his
acumen and passion, heart and soul, and hundreds and hundreds of hours into every square inch of our new campus design. Richard will share with us his experience of building sacred space, and what the lessons this project means for us all.

Finding the space and time to fit in everything we’d like to be doing is nearly impossible. Yet, there are times when that effort can have a large unseen impact. Making space to connect with friends and meet new people in your community not only strengthens your tie to that community but it models the importance to your children.
The Tribal Council is a group of parents who
represent each grade level Tribe and are tasked with helping parents connect with one another. This can be done via Facebook, at Temple events, or by a parent suggesting a meetup inviting other Tribe parents. So take some time for yourself and invite others from your grade to meet for brunch during religious school or a parent’s night out. Looking forward to connecting!
Shadow PuppetsPRESENTED BY DANIEL BARASHSunday, September 15, 2019 • 11:15am • Beck Family CampusWe are pleased to bring this amazing workshop to our Religious School students! Using the ancient art of shadow puppetry, in which shadows are cast upon a lit screen, Jewish stories and folktales from around the world are brought to life, fostering a love of Jewish stories that inspires a life of Jewish learning. Parents are invited to join their children for an hour of fun and laughter.
Temple Beth El will be hosting NFTY-STR Hatikvah Kallah, a fantastic weekend for Jewish middle-schoolers from all over Florida. We are in need of families who are able to host a minimum of three middle school teens from Friday evening through Sunday morning, and provide our famous Temple Beth El hospitality!
Host responsibilities include: providing space for teens to sleep (beds not necessary), breakfast and dinner on Saturday, and transportation to and from the Temple during the weekend.

EARLY LEARNING CENTER
The New Year is a Good Time to Learn about Mitzvot
The High Holy Days are a very special time of year at the Beth El Early Learning Center. These festivals embody so many valuable Jewish concepts for young children. On Rosh HaShanah we welcome in the new year and bright beginnings. On Yom Kippur we think about how we have behaved and learn about apologies and forgiveness. With Sukkot comes lessons of harvesting and the tradition of building a “sukkah” that has been passed from generation to generation. On Simchat Torah, the children get to examine a real
Torah up close, see the parchment, learn how it is written by hand, one letter at a time.
In perfect harmony with this season are the themes of Tikkun Olam (repairing our world) and Gimilut Chasadim (acts of charity and loving kindness). At our Early Learning Center this is the time of year that we launch our annual Mitzvah of
the Month program. What better way to teach our children about these mitzvot than with hands-on learning experiences that help make these abstract concepts real. We acknowledge individual students’ acts of kindness with our Mitzvah Mensch honor. You can’t miss them as they parade to Shabbat in their special colorful capes and masks!
We encourage you to support your children and their learning by participating in their efforts. Speak to them about the importance of these Jewish values in helping our world be a better place. At Temple Beth El we are fortunate to have an active Social Action Committee that plans programs that are fun and rewarding for the entire family. There is lots of information on our website about these opportunities. There is no better way to teach than to lead by example.

SISTERHOOD UPDATE
It has been quite a busy summer for our Sisterhood Board. We have been meeting and planning to create a year full of exciting, thought-provoking, and fun events. We are underway and super excited to see everyone.
Our summer girls’ night out event at Field of Flowers Flower Bar was a fun evening where we learned and created our very own flower arrangements. It was great
to see old and new Sisterhood members!
Before we know it, the holidays will be upon us and we will be gathered together as a community, one so large yet so intimate at the same time. We are truly blessed to have such amazing and engaging clergy and leadership. We try to emulate the inclusion that we feel from everyone here at Beth El into Sisterhood. We are most excited
about the opening of the redesigned lobby,
worship areas, learning spaces and of course our brand new Gift Shop which we like to call “Shuk (marketplace) Fourth Ave.” Sip, shop and schmooze at our Gift Shop Mezuzah Blessing with Wine and Cheese on Thursday, September 12th, and preview the items we will carry in the store. Join us to decorate our Sukkah on Friday, October 11th, and at our Challah Bake with the author of “Braided”, Beth Ricanati, M.D.

send holiday packages for Rosh HaShanah,

students. There is no charge, but donations are always welcome. Register

It is an exciting time to be affiliated with Temple Beth El. We just opened our beautiful new space here at the Schaefer Family Campus and it is awesome! My family has been members here for more than 25 years and seeing this new space is something I never thought I would see. I am looking forward to seeing all of you at High Holiday services this year.
Your Brotherhood has been working diligently over the summer planning events and developing new programming ideas for the upcoming year. We kick off on September 5th with an informative and fun evening combining a Brotherhood “Open House” for prospective members, networking and the opening night of the NFL season. Next we are offering group Krav Maga (Israeli martial arts) lessons at the Beck Family Campus with a reserve Lieutenant from the IDF who recently moved to Boca Raton. Our upcoming Sukkot “tasting” event in October will feature some unique spirits (not quite your father’s rye) and we will be hosting
our annual Brotherhood golf tournament at Boca Rio Country Club on November 18th. Our honorees this year are special members of our Beth El community, Dr. Peter and Ilene Wohlgemuth. Their contribution to our community is well documented and they set a wonderful example of what it means to give back. We are thrilled to honor them and we invite everyone to join us on November 18th. The proceeds from this year’s Golf Tournament will go towards the Brotherhood’s Project Rampart which will build a perimeter fence to help secure the Schaefer Family Campus.
For those of you interested in getting involved in Brotherhood, we meet the first Thursday of every month at the Beck Family Campus at 6:30pm. The meetings are open to all Brotherhood members. If you have any ideas for programs or ways we can improve our Brotherhood, feel free to call me at 561-350-7156.
Wishing you and your family all the best in 5780!

Rosh HaShanahApple and Honey Galette
INGREDIENTS1 ¼ cups all purpose flour1/2 teaspoon kosher salt10 tablespoons (1 ¼ sticks)
chilled unsalted butter, cut into 1/2-inch cubes
2-4 tablespoons ice water3 Granny Smith apples, peeled, cored,
cut into 1/8-inch-thick slices
3 tablespoons sugar, divided 1 teaspoon finely grated lemon zest1 tablespoon honey1 egg, beaten (for brushing on
pastry) 2 teaspoons course sugar
INSTRUCTIONSBlend flour, salt and 1 tablespoon of sugar in a food processor. Add the butter and pulse until mixture resembles coarse meal and some pieces of butter are about the size of chickpeas. Add 2 tablespoons ice water and pulse until dough begins to clump together. The dough should feel like wet sand. Add more water if needed. Form the dough into a ball and flatten into a disc. Wrap tightly in plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 2 hours and up to 2 days.
Bring the dough back to room tempera-ture and roll out dough on well floured surface to 1/8-inch-thick round, 14 inches in diameter. Transfer dough to a parch-ment lined baking sheet. Chill 15 minutes.
Preheat oven to 400 degrees.
Combine apple slices, 2 tablespoons sugar, honey and lemon zest in medium bowl; toss to cover all of the apples. Ar-range apple slices in concentric circles, overlapping slightly and leaving 1 1/2 inch border. Fold plain crust border over apples, crimping as you go. Pinch to-gether any cracks. Don’t worry, it should look rustic. Brush crust with egg. Sprin-kle crust edges and apples with course sugar.
Bake galette 30-40 minutes until crust is golden. Remove from oven and slide a knife between parchment and galette. Cool on a wire rack for 10 minutes. Cut into wedges and serve warm or at room temperature. Drizzle with more honey if desired for an extra sweet year.

The Expert In Orthopedic Spine Surgery

Dr. Norton is a world-leading expert in minimally invasive spine surgery and in office treatment of vertebral compression fractures with the kyphoplasty procedure. Dr Norton spends time when not seeing patients, teaching other surgeons cutting-edge minimally invasive surgical techniques. He recently even wrote a book chapter for a major spine textbook on how to do the kyphoplasty procedure in the office.
Throughout his career, Dr. Norton has had a strong interest in academic medicine and has been actively involved in teaching and research. He has authored multiple publications on a variety of topics related to spine surgery in numerous peer-reviewed journals and textbooks. He has received several research grants and has presented his research at both national and international conferences.
Compression fractures of the spine occur most often in people with osteoporosis, after a fall, after a forceful cough or sneeze, or simply from bending over to tie shoes. Fortunately, he can treat patients with an easy solution called a Kyphoplasty, performed in my office in about 10-minutes. After numbing the area, he will simply place a small needle into the broken bone under x-ray guidance. He can then inject a small amount of bone “glue” to stabilize the broken bone. This is a permanent fix and serves to get rid of the pain from the broken bone and prevent further collapse of the bone so you don’t become deformed and hunched over. The pain is gone immediately and you can walk out of the office with just a Band- Aid!Skilled in the most advanced surgical techniques and emerging technologies, Dr. Robert Norton offers expertise in all aspects of spine care. His expertise and excellent surgical outcomes have earned him the nickname, “Miracle Worker.”
