PART IV : English proficiency

ComprehensionRead the passage carefully, then answer the question on it. Give

answers that are simple, relevant and complete. Your answers should be inyour words as far as possible.

Being able to speak well, listen sensibly read pleasurably, and write skillfully-in English-doesnot happen immediately after one has understood the basic structures and the patterns of thelanguage, This is the unfortunate dilemma that faces students who attend courses in English.

It appears that when it comes to applying themselves to the different situations in life, many5 foreign learners of English fumble through expressions. Some stop dead in their attempt to reply

a question in English. Other stammer, stutter, and grope desperately for words when they wantto ask for simple directions such as, “Where is the nearest cafeteria or post-office or bank?”

Very often, English Language learners who have been able to put together words andphrases marvelously well in class, fall short of reaching home safely and happily after wandering

10 about in English-speaking community for an hour or two. Akiko, for instance, was just superb inclass-even Mr.Atkins said so to everyone and to Akiko herself.

“Good morning, Akiko. How are you this morning?”“Excellent, Mr.Atkins. I have had a good breakfast, and I’m ready for a good English lesson.”“Splendid! How did you come to school?”

15 “My husband brought me right up to the entrance. He was on his way to meet a clientwhose office is close by.”

Splendid, indeed! Akiko was able to put together many of the phrases she had picked up insome of the dialogue exercises she had been through during her Language in Action classes.

Outside the classroom, however, Akiko had to contend with more people than just Mr.Atkins20 and her peers. In the authentic community, language was completely in action. Akiko had a

bewildering variety of expressions thrown at her each time she asked a simple question.“Excuse me, sir, where do I have a post-office?”“Where do you have a post-office? Oh, I see you’re looking for a post-office?”“Yes, yes, a post-office. Post-office-very close?”

25 “Dear me. ‘very close’? Close by, you mean! I don’t know for sure-in fact I think you’re upthe wrong lane, lady. P’raps a neighbourhood police-post may be able to help you-a helpfulbunch of chaps, you know. God-knows down the road maybe”

“Down the road-yes, thank you.”

Page 40: ภาษาอังกฤษ O&A NET (ส่วนที่ 3)

ภาษาอังกฤษ (124)_______________________________ โครงการแบรนดซัมเมอรแคมป 20072007

Akiko thanked the gentleman and walked briskly away, but found neither the post-office nor30 the neighbourhood police-post, for she had walked not down the road, but up the road.

Has the boat been missed? How now, Brown cow!It would appear now, that, for some purposes, it is “no good” thinking that anything will do,

or, all language is useful. In Akiko’s case, it would appear that the right tools of language had notbeen given to her. The common, everyday expression; the variety of common idiom; the

35 exclamations in common speech; accepted phrases with different meanings; and, informal, contracted expressions and words have not come to be part of Akiko’s ideolect.

If Akiko kept going up the road each time she was to go down the road, it would be betterfor Akiko to stick fast to Nippon-go (the Japanese language) wouldn’t it? But, then, there’s away to the top of any mountain, surely!

Examination TechniqueIn answering questions on Comprehension passages : (1) Give only information that is called

for. Do not give information that has not been asked simply because you feel that your answersare too brief. (2) Let your answers reflect the tense of the question-question that have “did”require answers in the past tense ; questions with “does” or “do” require answers in the presenttense. As far as possible avoid using too many words lifted straight off the passage.1. Why was Akiko attending English language classes?

Paragraph 1 (lines 1-3)Q. What is the writer’s main idea in this paragraph?A. Those who take English courses and learn the basic structures of the language often find

themselves unable to apply themselves to the language fluently.Paragraph 2 (lines 4-7)

Q. How do foreign learners of English apply themselves to the different situations they find themselves in?

A. With difficulty.Paragraph 3 and 4 (lines 8-24)

Q. How do they apply themselves to classroom situations?A. Many of them do well. Akiko does so well, she is praised by Mr Atkins, her teacher.

Paragraph 5 and 6 (lines 25-31)Q. What happens to Akiko in an authentic (true-to-life) situation?A. She approaches someone for directions to the post-office. The person presumes that she

knows a lot of English and speaks to her in a way she cannot fully understand. Strange expressions which Akiko hears for the first time confuse her. She ends up worse off than when she started out.

Paragraph 7 (lines 32-36)Q. Why did the writer introduce Akiko’s unfortunate incident?A. The writer described the incident to show that courses may contain language topics thatare not useful to certain practical needs of foreign learners. They may not introduce learners to language that is commonly used by people in everyday situations.

Concluding Paragraph (lines 37-39)Q. What is theme of the concluding paragraph?A. It is one of encouragement. The writer implies that there is always a way to reach the top and to overcome a problem.

Now that you have written out the paragraph themes in your own words write your summary(in the space provided on the next page) in one-third the number of words used in the passage.Summary :

................................................................................................................................................................

................................................................................................................................................................

................................................................................................................................................................

................................................................................................................................................................

................................................................................................................................................................

................................................................................................................................................................

................................................................................................................................................................

................................................................................................................................................................

................................................................................................................................................................

................................................................................................................................................................

................................................................................................................................................................

................................................................................................................................................................

Note :After you have written your summary, check your work to see that you have not

(1) repeated points, (2) written out unnecessarily long expressions that, otherwise, may beaccurately expressed in one or two words, (3) made careless spelling, grammatical, andpunctuation mistakes. You need not tailor your summary so that it has exactly one-third thenumber of words used in the passage. You may find that you are five or six words short or inexcess. Do not let that trouble you.

(2) pleasurably(3) safely(4) happily(5) desperately(6) briskly

10. The writer commends that students attending English language courses often find that they cannot apply their knowledge to real life situations. Akiko was excellent in her class and even praised by her teacher, Mr.Atkins. However, one day when she sought directions to a post-office from someone outside the classroom, she did miserably. The writer suggests thatthis inability may be due to course topics being unsuited to real life situations where the language and idiom used are different from the tailored situations introduced to foreign language learners. The writer ends on the note of encouragement, however, saying that all problems can be overcome. (104 words)
