On the Cover - John Henderson & Genie Holt’s 1998 Torch Red Coupe

by John HendersonGenie and I met in August of 2002 and have been together ever since. Genie recently retired from Boeing after 37 years as an electrical design engineer and I retired from Bechtel Hanford in 2005 after 20 years in nuclear materials engineering. I'm a transplanted New Yorker via Oklahoma, West Virginia, Ohio, Virginia and now Washington. Genie, however, has a much more interesting origin. She was born of Dutch heritage in the Dutch East Indies

(now called Indonesia), moved to Holland at age 5, and moved to Medford, Oregon with her family in 1958. She speaks fluent Dutch and has 4 sisters living in Oregon and California. As I neared retirement, I knew that my one chance to own a Corvette was either now or never, so I began canvassing the local dealers and also searched online. I finally found my 1998 torch red coupe online at Corvette Country in Austin, Texas. After many e-mail and phone conversations with the salesman, together with numerous photos of nearly every square inch of the car sent to me, I decided to buy it... basically sight unseen in person. I had it shipped from Texas to Washington in a closed tractor trailer and it arrived in early December of 2003.

I still remember arriving in the shopping center parking lot in Richland, WA where the tractor-trailer driver was waiting for me. (I lived in Richland until moving to Bellevue in 2005.) The driver walked me to the rear of the trailer and said, “Are you ready for this?” When he opened the doors, there

was this gorgeous car, in pristine condition. I must admit I had been a bit

Page 6: NCRS Jay Cockrum (360) 387-3163 JJJ.Cockrum@wavecable.com NWACC Tim Cox (425) 488-9613 Tim@CorvetteMarqueClub.com NCM Wes Holmes (425) 255-5837 Wes@CorvetteMarqueClub.com CHAPLAIN

nervous about not having gone to Texas to personally see the car, and so I was more than a little relieved to see what great condition it was in. I should also tell you that there were several classic cars in the trailer being delivered around the country so my new baby was in good company.Genie and I joined CMCS in September of 2005 and have enjoyed the many functions and drives we have participated in and the many new friends we have made in the club. Our Vette occasionally needs extra TLC as it is beginning to show its age, with nearly 70,000 miles on it. I replaced the acrylic top last year after the sun screen tint began coming off due to wind abrasion. I also had the sun screen tint on the back window removed since it was beginning to bubble. The original owner had it applied in Texas. I recommend Mr. Tint and Sun on Bel-Red Road in Bellevue if anyone needs to have tint removed or applied. They did a great job and the defroster still works! The exhaust is also new - BORLA Stingers. Everything else in the car is original, except for the usual stuff, i.e. tires, which are currently Firestone Firehawk runflats, brakes and battery. We look forward to many more fun times with our CMCS friends and are already looking forward to both the wineries tour and the Cascade Loop Tour in September.

who have served our country. We’ll hook up with members of the Glass Odyssey Corvette Club at 5PM at a restaurant in Port Orchard then caravan to the Veterans Home in Port Orchard (Retsil). After a short car show display for the vets in front of their Home we’ll give the vets, who want to and are able, 10-15 minute rides over a pre-selected route in our Vettes. This was very popular with the vets in prior years. We need all the Vettes we can get to accommodate them this year. CMCS info: [email protected]

August is officially here and our Northwest official short summer is in full swing. Are you enjoying the weather and your car, or is it still under the car cover in the garage? Well there is no excuse for it to stay under the cover this month, as our calendar is full of activities. Literally, there is something happening every weekend. On August 4th you have the Magnolia parade in the morning, and in the evening you can choose between the Lake City parade or Frogstock at the Everett Aquasox game. On August 11th, we have our monthly club meeting. The weekend of the 18th brings us the latest rendition of Women Only Weekend (WOW), and finally on the 26th we have the third annual XXX all Corvette show and shine. Complete details of all of these activities are elsewhere in this issue. These are just the CMCS sponsored activities. If these activities aren’t to your liking, there are other club activities published in the newsletter and in the on-line event schedule. If you are new to the club and do not understand what some of these activities are about, contact me, or any of the other board members. Our phone numbers and e-mail addresses are listed in the front of the newsletter. Many volunteers in the club work hard to organize these activities and they all do it to provide something fun for you, and the Corvette fraternity, to do.Speaking of volunteers we recently had our second planning meeting for Seattle in September 2008. This is our biennial weekend event during which we host our members and other Corvette owners from all over the Northwest. Yes, there is some work involved, but joining the planning committee is a great way to get involved with the club and to get to know some of your fellow club members. So contact Michael or Jane Armstrong and get involved. We would welcome your ideas.Last month I reported that after months of not having a date, we were presented with a last minute change and given a date for School Daze, our driving event. Well, as you have probably seen in the e-mail message, we had to cancel School Daze for 2007. Due to the late start on promotion, we did not get the number of attendees necessary to make the event financially feasible. Hopefully, Pacific Raceways will work with us to firm up a date for 2008, allowing us to do a proper job of promotion.Remember, you don’t want to have regrets come October and the rain, that you didn’t do enough this summer. August is your opportunity.See you on the road.

NWACC Autocross ScheduleBy Tim Cox

NWACC (NW Association of Corvette Clubs), of which CMCS is a member, has four sanctioned autocrosses this year. They are:Date Location Sponsor7/29/07 Portland Rose City9/9/07 Shelton NWACC9/30/07 Everett NWACC10/14/07 Shelton NWACCIf you have wanted to try a speed/handling competitive event with your Corvette, then autocross is a great first try. Convertibles are allowed without a roll bar. All you need is a helmet and the right attitude. For the autocrosses in Shelton, some of us make a weekend social event of it and stay at the Little Creek Casino near Shelton. For more information about autocross, you can contact Wes Holmes, Tim Cox or Kevin Jewell.

Seattle in September 2008 (SIS V)By Michael & Jane Armstrong

Calling all Crew! SIS 2008 is picking up steam…. On July 16th, we held our 2nd meeting. We decided to adopt a nautical/naval theme. A contest to design the logo is described ion the next page. We have a hotel selected and soon we

will have our contract and rates finalized. You will love what we have found. We are planning to hold a publicly visible (and publicly attended) Show & Shine. Our hotel venue is perfect for the valve cover races, a welcoming reception, and the Sunday banquet with raffles, trophies and awards. We will finalize the cruise particulars at the next meeting. Do we go on Lake Washington or Elliot Bay? Should we do a sit-down dinner or buffet/reception? Then it is on to entertainment, caterers, etc.We need more ideas and a bunch more people to come to help pull together the details. Workers, idea folks, promoters, high and low energy types; ALL are welcome. You know, the kind of people we have in our club. So if you fit any of these descriptions, join us. This month’s meeting lasted just one hour. Our next meeting is 7 pm., August 20th, Round Table Pizza, Overlake/Redmond. Come early for pizza or salad.Questions? Or if you can’t make the meetings, but you want to help with a part of the event, please contact us.

Page 10: NCRS Jay Cockrum (360) 387-3163 JJJ.Cockrum@wavecable.com NWACC Tim Cox (425) 488-9613 Tim@CorvetteMarqueClub.com NCM Wes Holmes (425) 255-5837 Wes@CorvetteMarqueClub.com CHAPLAIN

How would you like a free hotel night at Seattle in September V?September 14-16, 2008Aye, aye, matey, that is correct.

All you have to do is win theContest for the SIS 2008 logo design.

The logo will be used on event apparel, printed materials, and who knows what else (perhaps caps, prizes, banners). The SIS committee will choose the winning design concept at its October meeting. Our theme is nautical. As many of you know, the Corvette name originated with a class of naval ships (similar to frigates) and goes back to the 1600’s with sloops. Well, since the 2008 event will include a cruise, we thought the nautical/naval theme would be perfect. Get creative. Keep in mind that the design must be reproducible and cost effective too. Keep it simple. The committee and its experienced logo advisors, that include Oran and our apparel manufacturer, reserve the right to tweak the chosen design to show it and the club in the best light. The absolute-latest deadline is the October CMCS club meeting. But you can mail your design to the club mailbox anytime. Enter as many times as you wish. The postmark date will be used as a last resort to decide between ties. So launch your idea soon. Just mark the envelope:SIS 2008 Logo Contest (or words to that effect). That’s all. Get your design shipshape and win that berth!

The Membership Tachometerby Michael Dail

We had a great club sponsored 4th of July picnic which certainly set the Marque for all future club sponsored picnics. The weather cooperated and a great time was had by all. In addition to the BBQ and the games, two new couples joined the club, bringing membership to 286.

Paradesby Jim McDonnell

Past ParadesAs of August 1st, CMCS has been in 5 parades. July 4th saw 4 Corvettes at Kirkland and 14 more in the Bothell Parade. Next was Redmond on July 7th. We had 10 Corvettes in the parade. Four carried dignitaries. After the parade most went to

the Mill Creek Corvette Show.Greenwood did not need as many Corvettes this year but several turned out on July 25 for an evening parade. Afterward we went to Dick's Drive-In for some great hamburgers. The Seafair Torchlight Parade was on Saturday July 28. Fifteen Corvettes participated. Seafair was very happy to have us.

Future ParadesSaturday August 4th, has two parades. The Magnolia parade will be in the morning and the Lake City Grand Parade will be in the evening. There are openings for you to join us in either or both. Both are short and easy to navigate. The Issaquah Salmon Days Parade, on Saturday, October 6, will be our last parade for the year. The crowd is large and enthusiastic about the wonderful Corvettes. We have lunch after the parade at Newcastle Golf Club.It is not too late to join us. We always have a good time.

• August 4th - Saturday - Magnolia Parade - Gather 9:30 am at 34th & West Raye. Parade at 10:30 am.

• August 4th - Saturday - Lake City Grand Performance Parade. Gather 5:30 pm at NE 135th st. and Lake City Way. Parade at 7 pm. We may carry a few celebrities.

• October 6th - Saturday - Issaquah Salmon Days Parade. Gather at Krispy Kream Donuts in Issaquah. We do not carry dignitaries.

Please contact me if you wish to make one or more of these parades.

SOVREN Vintage Races - Event Reportby Kevin Jewell

Many members of the club participated in the car corral and enjoyed the vintage races on June 30. The vintage races are organized by SOVREN (Society of Vintage Racing Enthusiasts) and all net proceeds benefit Children’s Hospital. This year the races netted $728,000 for Children’s. Spectacular day, great races, and a charity benefit to boot. Consider attending next year.

14th Annual “Take Me Out To The Ball Game”with the Everett Aquasox - Saturday August 4th

by Ben BenninghoffThis year “Marques” our club's 14th anniversary outing with the Everett Aquasox baseball team. This outing has been a club favorite over the years giving us another opportunity to show off our Corvettes inside the ballpark while getting ‘free’ reserved seating along the first base side. This year we’re again going to organize a food drive for the local food bank in Everett while conducting a car show for the fans; kind of a mini ‘show-n-shine’ where the people attending the game will cast their vote for their favorite car. And how are they going to do that? Glad you asked. Instead of ballots being passed out, the fans will place their non perishable food items in storage bins placed in front of each car. The winner will be the car receiving the most items and/or cash donations where a can will be placed as well so those wishing to make a cash/check donation to the food bank can do so. Somewhere around the 7th or 8th inning an announcement will be made and the trophy awarded to the winner. Talk about a win-win situation, it doesn’t get any better than this. So now you have an extra incentive to join in on the fun this year and help others out in the process. You can begin to arrive at the ballpark after 3 pm but before 5 pm due to traffic, both foot and vehicle traffic at the ballpark. Once parked inside the south fence, break out your picnic baskets on the lawn and eat to your heart’s content. All food items must be packed up and put away prior to the gates opening at 6 pm. After that you are welcome to sit in the reserved bleachers along the first base side, mingle with other club members alongside the Corvettes, or go for a bread-bowl filled with hot steamy Ivar's clam chowder, hot dogs, pretzels, pizza, and ice-cold beer or other beverages of your choice.

The Aquasox are celebrating their annual salute to the '60's with their “FrogStock” night, so bring your tie dye t-shirts and tight jeans and join in on the spirit. Those sporting the best period clothes from the 60s just might win something memorable. Bring something warm to wear, it does get cool after the sun goes down, and a seat cushion for your you know what. After all, those are real wooden bench seats with real wooden splinters, and I don't care how good a friend you are, you'll be taking them home with ya! And bring some

food item donations with you.For more information:

Okay, I know last month I promised to talk about the Road Tours feature of the web site, but if you haven’t noticed that feature is not available yet. So I decided to talk about a feature that is becoming more popular: Classified AdsUnlike submitting photos to the web site, ads are not limited to only club members. Anyone who has registered on the site can submit an ad. Of course they still have to meet our guidelines and get approved by the Ads Moderator. Also keep in mind that your ad will only be viewable for 30 days. After that you will get an automated e-mail letting you know when your ad has expired.Let’s get started by submitting an ad:1. Login to the web site2. Click on any of the Classified categories in the left navigation3. Click on the button to view the “Submit/Manage

Your Ad(s)” area4. Unless you have created ads already, the only radio button option will

be CREATE NEW AD5. Fill out the form

• Select the Ad Type from the dropdown list• Entering a year is optional since parts are not always associated

with one year• Enter the price of the item you are selling. If you are looking for an

item, or don’t want to list the price, enter 0.00• Put in the name of the item (i.e. 1998 Silver Coupe)• Enter a description with a maximum of 1000 characters. This

should be more than enough• If you want to list OBO, select the Or Best Offer checkbox

• Check the box to list your e-mail address in the ad. If not, you will need to make sure your contact information is listed in the ad description

• Don’t worry about the Item is sold checkbox. This is for later on when you have sold your item

6. Click on Submit Ad and you are doneYou should now see another radio button in the list below the CREATE NEW AD with the name of the item you just submitted. If you click on this you can make changes to that ad. Additionally, you can now submit photos for this ad…Here’s how:1. Click on the radio button for the “1998 Silver Coupe” ad you just submitted above2. Scroll down the page to find the Ad Photos section3. Click on the Browse… button to look for the photo on your local hard drive4. Click the Submit Photo buttonNOTE: The same photo limitations apply here that were outlined for submitting photos to the site.If you have any questions or issues with your ads, feel free to e-mail me ([email protected]) or use the Feedback form on the web site.

Riding the Rogue (SOCA) - Event Reportby Ken & Jean Fiorentino

Jean & I went to this event, sponsored by the Southern Oregon Corvette Association, held July 13/15, 2007 in Grants Pass Oregon. We met our friends from Diablo Valley Corvettes of Northern California. There were 218 cars registered. The theme was Riding the Rogue. The weather humid and the temperature hovered at about 95 degrees. We placed 2nd in class in the Show & Shine (2005-2007 Stock), held at the hotel lodge on the river bank. A great place to spend the weekend with good Corvette people. We enjoyed the entire event. They had a Poker Run, a River Boat Run and other fun driving events. There was no autocross. The food was good, the location was great. We recommend you try this event in 2009 at this same location. SOCA alternates this event with another Oregon club every other year. In 2008 it will be in Bend. Jean & I would like to be CMCS Coordinators for this event.

Mill Creek Show - Event Report & Winnersby Lorrie Montgomery

Saturday, July 7th was another one of our beautiful sunny days in Seattle...just perfect as a matter of fact. About 80 degrees with a slight breeze. Who could ask for anything better? Well, we could! Like the 134 shiny Corvettes that came to the Mill Creek All Corvette Car Show. And what a great venue. The City of Mill Creek had their annual festival which included shopping at the many stores, plenty of food,

plenty of booths, a Doggy Diving Contest, and lots of entertainment including Elvis! In the middle of it all was this year's All Corvette Show organized by Jay and Jan Cockrum. Everything from organization, to promotion, to obtaining sponsors, to gathering raffle prizes was all handled by Jay and Jan. Of course we can't forget the CMCS members who gave of their time and energy both in the planning and the day of the event and Corporate Sponsors Kompact Kar Korner, North Bend Chevrolet, William McElroy Investments, Quiznos Subs, Lee Johnson Chevrolet and People's Bank. Thank you all for helping to make this an extremely successful event. Following are the winning Corvettes as artfully announced by our emcee of the day, Lance Lambert.

LeMay Car ShowAugust 25, 2007

Thirty years ago, Harold and Nancy LeMay opened their estate and car collection to the various car clubs and friends for an informal picnic and display. Nancy continued the tradition after Harold’s death and today thousands of people visit the two sites in Tacoma (buses provided to take you between sites) on the open house. Many car clubs will also display their cars, so there are literally a thousand cars to see. The $10 entry donation ($20 for a family of four) will help to build the permanent LeMay collection museum planned near the Tacoma Dome. If you have never been to the LeMay show, this is a must see. Hours are 9 am to 5 pm and the wise go early. For more information, go to www.lemaymuseum.org.
