CAMPUS ICONS AND TRADITIONS
The University SealThe University Seal is separated into four quadrants each identifying a part of the rich culture that makes California State University, Northridge unique.
The San Fernando Mission heritage is depicted by the arched adobe columns; The feather quill pen and parchment represent scholarship. The geomorphology of the San Fernando Valley is created by the surrounding Santa Monica, San Gabriel, and Santa Susana Mountains, along with the Chatsworth Hills. The Sun, which is both in our moniker, C “SUN,” as well as an attractive environmental feature which Southern California is famous for.
The typography that surrounds the pictograms was originally designed in a serif face, similar to Times Roman. It was updated to the unique sans serif face by Randall Tucker, then director of Reprographics in the early-eighties, under the direction of President James W. Cleary.

The Honors Convocation MedallionThe Honors Convocation Medallion symbolizes academic and/or personal achievement by members of the graduating class who have met the established criteria. The Honors Convocation Medallion was designed to commemorate this occasion and features the University Seal in pewter with red and black backing, which are two of the University’s school colors. The Honors Medallion is worn by the recipient at his or her college ceremony.
The Presidential MedallionThe Presidential Medallion symbolizes the authority of the office of President of the University. It is invested upon the University President by the Chancellor, who confers the authority and responsibilities of the office. It is worn on official occasions with academic regalia.
The Presidential Medallion of California State University, Northridge was designed by former professor David Elder of the Department of Art 3-D. The medallion reproduces the University’s seal. It was cast in brass at the University’s Fine Arts Foundry in 1970 and has been used in all University ceremonial occasions since that time. The University MaceA mace is a ceremonial staff used as a symbol of authority. In the Middle Ages the mace was a heavy club with a spiked or flanged metal knob at one end, used chiefly by knights to crush the armor of opponents. Royal bodyguards often carried maces to protect their monarch in processions. By the 14th century, maces had become more ceremonial in use and were decorated with jewels and precious metals, losing their war-club appearance. Maces were no longer used as weapons after the 16th century.
The California State University, Northridge Mace was presented to the University by the Bibliographic Society of CSUN (precursor to the Friends of the Library) to commemorate the occasion of the University’s 25th Anniversary. The soaring bird atop the staff symbolizes academic freedom, while the silver marks the Silver Anniversary of CSUN. It was carried in 1983 for the first time in the Commencement Processional by Norman E. Tanis (then Director of University Libraries, and Executive Secretary of the Bibliographic Society), who acted as Sergeant-at-Arms. The mace was constructed by a former CSUN student, Jeffrey Roter, who is the owner of a lighting manufacturing company in Chatsworth.
The Matador Statue - History of an IconIn 1958, students at then San Fernando Valley State College selected “The Matador” as the official mascot out of 158 recommendations. The students hoped to establish a tradition and find an icon around which to rally and represent the courageous character of the university. Their foresight was wise, and through the years students and alumni adopted The Matador as a symbol of California State University, Northridge’s spirit – nicknaming the gymnasium “The Matadome” and posing for pictures with “Matty,” Northridge’s costumed cheerleader.
The original statue campaign was launched by a campus committee in 1989. The Department of Art hosted a contest to come up with a design. The committee selected a design created by alumnus Frank Panaro ’84 (Physics), ’90 (Art). The design went to the foundry; however, plans stalled after the 1994 Northridge earthquake. Unfortunately, due to overriding campus priorities following the earthquake, the statue was never completed and the original full-size clay molds deteriorated and had to be destroyed. To celebrate the 50th anniversary of Cal State Northridge in 2009, a campus-wide committee, under the leadership of the late Vice President for Student Affairs Terry Piper and then Associate Vice President for Student Affairs William Watkins ’74 (Urban Studies), convened to rekindle the effort. The original designer was not available so the committee began a nationwide search for an artist to bring to fruition the 20-year-old vision. In 2010, Jon Hair, a North Carolina-based sculptor, was commissioned to create and install a bronze Matador statue.
4
The Matador Statue fundraising committee launched a drive to raise $150,000 to build a larger-than-life-size bronze statue, the first of its kind on campus. Alumni rallied to support the initiative and no state funds were used. This iconic bronze sculpture salutes the courage, grace, creativity, ability and strength of Cal State Northridge’s students, alumni and the entire campus community. The statue is located across from the Matador Square in the area west of the University Student Union and east of the Oviatt Library. For more information about the statue fundraising campaign, visit www.csunalumni.com.
Tradition of the RoseRed roses are to be laid at the base of the Matador Statue by every Matador who wants to commemorate or celebrate a significant achievement or a time of overcoming a worthy adversary, including (but not limited to):· Passing a difficult test or class· Overcoming a personal obstacle or difficulty· Joining a significant campus organization· Achieving a degree· Getting a new job or promotion· Celebrating a personal milestone (birthday, engagement, wedding, death)· Athletic teams celebrating successful games or conference play· Departments celebrating achievements or marking milestones· Significant occurrences in the life of the campus community
HISTORY
The Academic Dress The most important centers of intellectual life in the 10th century were the monasteries, the segment of society least affected by the disorders of the time. The relative stability of the monastic life left monks free to develop systematic graded education for the first time in Western society. The first students were the monks and priests themselves, and the costumes they wore were more for protection from the elements than as distinctive regalia for the scholarly way of life. Caps were a necessity in the cold drafty buildings, and capes and hoods were worn for warmth.
In later centuries, as the British universities passed from the control of the ecclesiastics, the costumes took on brighter colors, and the hood, a stole-like garment, was singled out as the item to be made distinctive for various degrees by color, trimming and lining.
The traditional attire worn at Commencement Exercises had its beginnings in the Middle Ages when the university first developed as an institution of higher learning.
The use of caps, gowns, and hoods has been continuous in the United States since Colonial times - the tradition having been transplanted from Oxford and Cambridge to the New World; however, the dress code was modified and vivid colors so prevalent in Great Britain were eliminated. Prior to 1895, faculty academic costumes varied widely from university to university. Since few people knew the distinguishing marks or colors for the various degrees, the dress code was standardized for all American universities. Students began a movement which would spread throughout the country to make academic regalia an integral part of the Commencement ceremony. A desire to make the festivities more impressive, as well as to add grace and dignity to the function, led to the success of this endeavor.
CSUN Cap and Gowns At California State University, Northridge, the baccalaureate candidates wear a wide-sleeved gown and the master’s candidates wear a gown with slit sleeves. Both groups wear caps with colored tassels. The lining of the master’s hood matches the tassel color, which identifies the College in which the degree has been taken. All graduates must wear the required academic dress for their degree. Graduates not properly dressed will not be permitted to participate in the commencement ceremony.
Eligible students may rent their Cap and Gown at the Matador Bookstore on the days of GradFest. If you do not pre-order your regalia, you must visit the Bookstore during business hours up until the
5
week before the Commencement Ceremonies, Friday, May 16, 2014, to rent your regalia. Starting May 5, 2014, students will be able to pick-up their rentals, which will include their official name card that must be retained for the ceremony. All rented regalia should be returned at the conclusion of your College’s Commencement Ceremony either to drop-off points at each Commencement site or at the Matador Bookstore. The cap and tassel are yours to keep. A late fee will be assessed for rentals not returned by the deadline. Please bring late returns to the Matador Bookstore.

Graduates should arrive robed and ready to line-up for the processional no later than 60 minutes before the ceremony is to begin in order to check-in. At the Commencement ceremony, students possessing an official name card will be directed to the graduate check-in area.
Students without their official name card will be directed to a graduate check-in tent. Students must retain the official name card until collected by the name reader during the ceremony.
The graduate check-in area for the Commencement Ceremonies will be at the south end of the Sierra Quad.
Look for the directional signs to the graduate check-in. Faculty and staff from your College will be supervising the line-up procedure for the processional. Please follow their instructions.
GRADUATE BEHAVIOR
Commencement is a dignified occasion. Participants are expected to conduct themselves accordingly. The behavior of each graduate helps to set the tone for this important event. Graduates and families look forward to this milestone with excitement and anticipation. For many guests, Commencement is their first visit to our campus. The ceremony and appropriate behavior by the graduates will create positive memories for all who attend. Students and guests are expected to remain seated until the ceremony has concluded.
Alcoholic beverages are strictly prohibited. Any alcoholic beverages discovered on the premises will be confiscated. Any graduate or guest obviously intoxicated or under the influence of a controlled substance will be removed from the Commencement site and are potentially subject to arrest.
