Neck masses are common in the general population and represent a wide array of pathologies. • The likelihood for any given neck mass diagnosis is most closely related to the patient's age. • Inflammatory neck masses are the most common neck masses in pediatric and young adult age groups. • Congenital neck masses are rarely seen in older adults, and the possibility for malignancy must be thoroughly investigated in this group of patients. • The unknown primary squamous cell carcinoma of the neck represents a special entity and diagnostic paradigm. A specific protocol must be followed when patients with unknown primary squamous cell carcinoma of the neck are being evaluated, with the main goal of locating the primary lesion in a mucosal site.
