CAROLYN’S CORNER

Thank you for electing me to serve a second two-year term as President of the Hawaii District of United Methodist Women. I have enjoyed representing you at California-Pacific UMW and United Methodist Church events, plus having the opportunity to visit my family in the Pacific Northwest. This past year also had several “50th Celebrations” in my life. I attended the 50th Anniversary Celebration of my college graduation and now have lived in Hawaii for 50 years, as I came here on a teaching contract in 1961.

We experienced a great annual UMW celebration at Kilohana UMC in September. Your Hawaii Team went to California in October to attend the Cal-Pac UMW officer training and annual celebration in Los Angeles, where we got to meet and hear our Women’s Division General Secretary, Harriet Jane Olson.

On February 18, 2012, the Mid-Winter Event, co-sponsored with the Cal-Pac UMW, will be at Waianae UMC. The theme is “Partnering with Others in Mission” and a panel will focus on Women’s Division’s Top 4 Initiatives: Climate Change, Domestic Violence, Human Trafficking & Immigration, and Mission Opportunities (Ubuntu Day of Service) for hands-on work during the event. Invite your young women! The Conference did give us a total of $500 for air scholarships to active neighbor island units. All UMW Units and women interested in the work of United Methodist Women are welcome at all of Hawaii’s District events, plus Conference events. Put on your calendars the following dates in 2012:

We have learned from the Conference Mission Coordinator for Membership Nurture and Outreach that while our UMW Units did have Charters, but what is more important is that you are either an “Active” or “Inactive” Unit. I also learned that “Charters” is no longer the correct term, but should be called “Certificate of Organization”. This past year several churches in Hawaii have chosen to let their United Methodist Women Units become “Inactive”. When new leadership arrives (and it will in the future), they just need to submit the names of at least three leaders, make a pledge to missions, and will once again be welcomed back as an “Active” or “Re-organized” UMW Unit. Churches that have never had an Active Unit will go through a process of organization. Our MNO Mission Coordinator can help. We hope that someday there will be an active UMW Unit at every United Methodist Church. (See pgs. 29—33 in the UMW Handbook)

Your Hawaii UMW District Team is now ready to join you, “Hand in

Hand” as we follow the UMW 2012 program book, Walk With

Wholeness, and have the opportunity to guide your officers and

Units. Please put January 14, 2012, on your calendars, as this is the date of our Local Unit Training, and it will again be at Christ UMC in Honolulu. Air scholarship money is available for active neighbor island units.

Vice President cont.

That’s what Christmas is all about. Jesus is the only one who can make it possible for us to stand in the presence of His Father and receive heaven as our eternal home. He didn't need a title or a crown or recognition or money. Jesus has never needed those things to change people's hearts and neither do you. His love is enough to bring you joy, peace, happiness and eternal assurance. And this priceless gift is available to every person on earth! MELE KALIKIMAKA, HAUOLI MAKAHIKI HOU! Vice President – Leola Nisa

Greetings in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ! My name is Leola Nisa. I am with great honor and humility, given this opportunity to serve once again on our Hawaii District Team as your Vice President. I truly thank God for all of you and all what you do. Your participation and service in all of our events throughout the year, has helped each one of us to grow spiritually rich together in the Lord. This growth equips us to be able to reach out and share these gifts in our communities, in the nation, and in the whole world fulfilling the PURPOSE of UMW, beginning at our back door to the ends of the earth! Let us not forget the greatest of all Leaders—who came to this earth not to be served, but to serve others. On that night, He transformed the world. He shattered all of our man-made power structures and gave the poor and humble in spirit a chance to be great. He gave each of us an opportunity to become a child of God.

Committee on Nominations – Penny

Brouillette

My name is Penny Brouillette. My husband, Dennis & I moved over to Honolulu, Hawaii, in 2007 for his health, leaving our three daughters, son-in-laws, and seven grandchildren in the mainland. I have been involved with different ministries here at Aldersgate United Methodist Church, to be celebrating their 100 years in 2012. These ministries include Sunday school classes, witness ministry, bible study, choir, our church prayer coordinator, and United Methodist Women's ministries. Last year, I became our church’s UMW Vice President, and now a new member of the UMW district’s Committee on Nominations. I pray I can be of much value to our UMW ministries globally, and our Lord in this appointed position, which I am very thankful for. Hawaii District Secretary – Ellen Owens

My name is Ellen Owens. I served four years as the Secretary of Program Resources and have moved to District Secretary for the next two years. I am a member of Kilohana United Methodist Church. I am a retired Middle School teacher of Language Arts and Social Studies, but have had a variety of jobs that required teaching students of all ages and levels. Currently, I spend my days being a docent at the Honolulu Academy of Art; quilting in my home studio and reading a wide variety of books—mysteries, historical pieces, and romance as well as those books on the UMW Reading List. I am also working on getting at least 45 minutes of exercise per day by walking with a neighbor or going to CURVES. As the Hawaii District moves to being a “green” unit, I hope to be able to communicate by e-mail with those who need help with UMW questions on the Reading Program and brochures. E-mail address: [email protected]

School of Christian Mission cont. Four full time and eleven half scholarships will be available. Look for the form(s) at a later date. These are the studies: Haiti: Offers “an overview of the cultures that shaped Haiti’s past and the ongoing legacy of colonialism, along with glimpses into the heart and soul of Haiti’s people Through pictures and Creole adages.” It will also include the impact of the January 12, 2010 earthquake. Poverty: “Our Christian faith invites each of us and our faith communities to become agents of God’s compassion and healing in a wonderful world. Poverty is a human rights issue with grace impact on women and children.” One of the chapters will address: Are we avoiding or encountering the poor? Immigration in the Bible: This study shares “the study of the Bible as a narrative of immigrants and migration. Exploring the Biblical and theological understandings of immigration, immigrants, and migration, this study seeks to enable you the participants to examine what it is to be a sojourner and to live into the Biblical mandate of hospitality for “the stranger” and “aliens” in our midst.

Message cont. I would also like to remind you to empty your treasuries. What does this mean? Remit monies which are over what you need for your unit’s operating budget for January 2012. The District will be doing the same. We will only leave what we need to spend for the month of January, and the rest will all be sent to the Cal-Pac UMW. Also, please consider a contribution to our Kokua Fund. It’s being used to offer airfare scholarships to UMW units from the neighbor islands. It always feels good and uplifting for all of us that our sisters can come and join in our district’s UMW celebrations.

Let's continue to encourage our units to give to missions. Give much, give little...? Our Father in Heaven knows what we can and besides, He owns all what we have. Consider the widow's offering that put in two very small copper coins worth only a fraction of a penny. “Jesus said, ‘I tell you the truth, this poor widow has put more into the treasury than all the others. They all gave out of their wealth; but she, out of her poverty, put in everything—all she had to live on.’ (Mark 12: 41—44)" One last reminder, please make your checks payable to Hawaii District UMW and mail to Emma Gaboy, 3985 Ohuohu Road C3, Koloa, HI 96756. If you have concerns, you may also send an e-mail to [email protected] or call at 808-639-1244. Thank you.

YOUR CONTRIBUTIONS HELP TO BUILD UNITED METHODIST WOMEN

Treasurer – Emma Gaboy

My full name is Fatima Gaboy, but I prefer to be called by my nickname, Emma. I was born and raised in the Philippine. I’m single and living with my 92 year old mother on the beautiful island of Kauai. I enjoy nature, the outdoors, and traveling too. I migrated to the United States on December 23, 2004, and since then became an active member of the West Kauai United Methodist Church, also having involvement with their United Methodist Women unit. In 2009, one member from my church’s Board of Trustees recommended me to the Hawaii District UMW, which I later served on the Committee on Nominations. During my second year of service with the District, I accepted the challenge to become the Treasurer. The 2011—2012 term will count as my second year in the position...thriving and still learning. I love mission which is reaching out to the least of our brethren. Being in this position is the least service I can do to support mission work to youth, children, and women.

Message Aloha to my fellow treasurers of the Hawaii District UMW Units. Only a few more days and 2011 will come to an end. For you who remitted your pledges, I thank God for you. Your efforts and contributions are not in vain. For the rest of you that have not completed pledges for 2011, you still have a few more days left to send. Summary of your remittances will be presented during our Local Unit Training on Saturday, January 14, 2012 at Christ UMC, and please make sure to be there. Block your calendar now. Let us come together and “Walk with Wholeness: Hand in Hand” on that day as we share our time and knowledge about our work as treasurers.
