3. Work hard
4. Play hard
5. Read the literature
Extract from “What makes a good PhD student?”, Nature, vol 441, 11 May(2006), p.254 by Georgia Chenevix-Trench
6. Plan your days and weeks very carefully 7. Keep a good lab book, and write it up every day 8. Be creative 9. Be active, not passive, in your approach to research10. Go to as many seminars as you can and all of them in your general area11. Make the most of any opportunities to attend a conference or workshop12. Practice your writing in any way you can13. Plan to work abroad at some point
14. Take a notepad and write down the action items when you meet with your supervisor15. Buy yourself a lap top if you can possibly afford it16. Make the most of any opportunities to talk about your work17. Look ahead18. Set yourself deadlines and try to keep them19. Think very early and very carefully about what you plan to do after your PhD20. Start collaboration21. Take courses which you need extra help in
22. Get involved in institute or department events23. Work out if you are a good collaborator, or more suited to working alone
• Ultimately, to be a successful research scientist you need to be at least four of the following:
1. extremely motivated 2. creative 3. very smart 4. very hard working 5. very skilful in the lab or at the computer 6. very lucky
The stories of Da Vinci and Newton tell us that your success depends 95% on yourself and only 5%
on your professors!
