ADOPT A HERITAGE: Apni Dharohar, Apni Pehchan (1/2)

• Launched in September 2017, an initiative of the Ministry of Tourism, in collaboration with the Ministry of Culture and the Archaeological Survey of India.

• Under the scheme, the government invites entities, including public sector companies, private sector firms as well as individuals, to develop selected monuments and heritage and tourist sites across India.

• Development of these tourist sites calls for providing and maintaining basic amenities, including drinking water, ease of access for the differently abled and senior citizens, standardized signage, cleanliness, public conveniences and illumination, along with advanced amenities such as surveillance systems, night-viewing facilities and tourism facilitation centres.

ADOPT A HERITAGE: Apni Dharohar, Apni Pehchan

• The sites/monument are selected on the basis of tourist footfall and visibility

• The government has put up a list of over 93 ASI monuments that can be bid for by private and public sector firms, as well as individuals.

• So far, 31 agencies or Monument Mitras have been approved to adopt 95 monuments/tourist sites. (as on May 2018)

Note: The oversight committee also has the power to terminate a memorandum of understanding in case of non-compliance or non-performance.

Monument Mitras

• The sites can be adopted by private and public sector companies and individuals — known as Monument Mitras — for an initial period of five years.

• The Monument Mitras are selected by the ‘oversight and vision committee,’ co-chaired by the Tourism Secretary and the Culture Secretary, on the basis of the bidder’s ‘vision’ for development of all amenities at the heritage site.

• No financial bid involved.

• The corporate sector is expected to use corporate social responsibility (CSR) funds for the upkeep of the site.

• The Monument Mitras, in turn, will get limited visibility on the site premises and on the Incredible India website.

Page 12: uttarakhandtourism.gov.in...Jantar Mantar, Delhi Apeejay Park Hotels Kaziranga National Park, Assam JTI Group Sibsagar Monuments (Assam): Rang Ghar, Kareng Ghar, Shiva Daul JTI Group

A win-win for corporate houses

1. Tremendous brand visibility as the footfalls and media coverage is guaranteed by the heritage sites itself.

2. The prestige that the association bestows on the brand adds much value to the brand’s image.

3. The gain to the brand image far outweighs the cost of maintenance and upkeep of the site; elevate its status internationally.

4. The equity and value of the brand is significantly improved in the eyes of all stakeholders by sustaining its efforts in this direction.

As a community, we all need to do our bit to protect and preserve historical monuments

(They were imprisoned by the British), who after escaping imprisonment captured the story of this region in their book, “Seven Years in Tibet”. •Nelong Valley opens for tourists from April 15 to November 15. Sati Ghat-Kankhal, Haridwar

• Located at Kankhal Chowk Bazaar, Kankhal, Haridwar, Sati Ghat has attracted pilgrims and visitors for centuries. The Sati Ghat has its historic significance as in the past the ghat was used for locating the cenotaph/ memorial of the Sati (Parvati).

• The region in Haridwar celebrates the myth of Shiva and Parvati, where Parvati, angry over her own father’s insult to her husband, the lord of the worlds, Shiva, immolated herself at the spot where the Daksh Mandir stands in this city.

• Sati Ghat is close by to the holy river Ganga - In the present context when the practice of Sati is abandoned, The ghat is used for asthivisarjan or the immersion of ashes after cremation. People from across the world come to immerse the ashes of their dear ones.

• Series of Samadhis or memorials are located at the ghat, whose architectural style and construction materials reflect the influence of different periods.

• Also a host to the famous, Vishwakarma Temple and Mithilesh Sanatana Dharma School, both showcasing prestigious architecture.
