As I write this, we are in
our last days of 2020. What a year! January will be my last month as Moderator, and next month you’ll be reading Pastor Jen Bloesch’s first Communicator article in this space.
When I addressed the congregation at the January 2020 Annual Meeting, I borrowed Wisconsin’s own motto, “Forward!” The pandemic caused us to pause to redefine what that meant, but we’ve made some amazing strides this year, growing in ways we didn’t know were possible.
While time seemed to stand still during March and April, it’s remarkable how quickly the rest of the year flew by. And yet, amidst “unprecedented times” and a year filled with transitions, we remain a vibrant and healthy congregation. As I’ve spoken to several people outside of MCC who are seemingly astonished by this as other churches struggle.
Despite the challenges we’ve endured, the list of accomplishments for 2020 is L-O-N-G. I could not be prouder of how people have stepped up and adapted this year, given both the expected and unexpected changes we have experienced. Staff and volunteers have had to redefine not just what they do, but how they accomplish their objectives. Members previously nervous about embracing technology are joining meetings and fellowship groups on a regular basis. Board and Council members reached out to nearly every active family before Christmas to ensure we continue to maintain community, especially with those who are struggling to adapt to this new reality.
And despite a spike in unemployment and economic uncertainty, our congregation has graciously maintained giving. We were able to reinstate the Benevolence Fund to help members in need, and we are wrapping up a
successful pledge campaign for 2021. Financial stability continues to be a strength of MCC.
I’ve listed just a few of our successes this year. At our upcoming Annual Meeting, you’ll have the opportunity to review our impressive financial results for the past year, approve our balanced budget for the new year, and hear about the accomplishments of staff, the Boards, and the congregation as a whole. The Annual Meeting is scheduled for Sunday, January 31, at 9:30am, via Google Meet. I hope to see you there!
I’ve received some kind and reassuring words from several of you over the last few weeks – thank you. But, honestly, no Moderator could succeed in this role without the support of strong staff and the effectiveness of the Church Council, and all the Boards and Committees that make so much of what MCC does, “happen”. We are very fortunate to have so many bright, dedicated volunteers that work tirelessly together toward the success of the MCC and its missions.
MCC is in excellent hands with your upcoming Moderator, Alin Pop-Vicas, and Moderator Elect, Steve Weber. They are already working together to plan February’s Leadership Advance for new and returning Board and Council members, and set the tone for 2021.
Thank you for your trust and support this year. I am looking forward to all the good that 2021 can bring us, including the availability of COVID-19 vaccinations and the hope that we can worship and meet in person again safely.
Blessings to you for a Happy New Year! Kristin Friel, Moderator

Thank You from the Board of Worship
Well, it’s that time of year when saying “Thank You” is important as we remember the many gifts Middleton Community Church received in 2020. “Gifts” you say and the Board of Worship replies, “yes – gifts galore!” So, the Board would like to say Thank You to all for the following gifts received in 2020: ● The Gift of Anne Tennies and her
professional video production skills. Moving everything online is not something we would have been able to do without Anne who was able to, on a weekly basis, take numerous recordings and weave them together with the end product a worship service we all were thankful for…. Thank You, Anne
● The Gift of Barbara Brown and her musical acumen. Without hesitation (well maybe there was a moment or two), Barb quickly moved to recording music and organizing special music for each worship service. Music at MCC has always been a special part of our service and Barb didn’t let us down. It remained the thread that pulled it all together to put us in a worshipful place. She also brought us the joy of seeing Zeke, her dog, every Sunday….. Thank You, Barb
● The Gift of Darci Warner and her creative Children’s Sermons. It takes a true gift of imagination to bring the scriptures to our children in a meaningful and magical manner with an inventiveness that enthralled children and adults alike. With inspiration and ingenuity every week, what can we say but… Thank You, Darci
● The Gift of Our Many Vocalists and Instrumentalists. At MCC we are truly blessed with many talented musicians, whether vocal or instrumental. They all stepped up to record music that made our worship “sing!” We know that doing those recordings involved hours of effort and for that we say…. Thank You, MCC Musicians
● The Gift of our Liturgists and their creative readings. Too many to name here, but the Board offers thanks to ALL who volunteered to read the Call To Worship and Scripture…. And read it while creatively involving the entire family!! You all made a difference and brought smiles to our faces as we connected with each other online…. Thank You, Sunday Liturgists
● The Gift of our Sanctuary Arts Team, led by Jacci See. Even though the building was closed, some of our worship was recorded in the Sanctuary. Without blinking an eye, the Team did what they do best – decorated the Sanctuary for each season, culminating with a serene and sacred Christmas backdrop. For ensuring that our worship background represented the season, we say…. Thank you, Sanctuary Arts Team
● The Gift of our member Retired Ministers – Gail O’Neal & Dave Werner. As the saying goes, “When one door closes, another opens” and Gail and Dave graciously entered – willing to go the extra mile and serve in a co-pastor position as we searched for an Interim Minister. Quickly adjusting to the ins and outs of recording the service, something just as new for both of them as it was to all of us, Gail and Dave smoothly led worship without missing a beat. It doesn’t seem like enough, but we ALL say…. Thank you, Gail & Dave
And, finally, to all the members of the MCC Boards and Council – thank you for seeing us through this year and supporting all the ministries at MCC as we strove to maintain our calling as Christians.
Blessings to all and here’s to a 2021 filled with joy and love as we reunite once again at Middleton Community Church
🎉 Happy New Year One & All! 🎉

Annual Meeting - Sunday, January 31, 9:30am Our Annual Meeting will be our next official
congregational meeting, during which we will be voting to accept the 2020 church financial statements, the 2021 operating budget, and the various Board and Council reports on activities and accomplishments during 2020. This meeting also marks the transition among those church leaders who will be stepping down, and those new leaders assuming new roles beginning in 2021.
If you attended our congregational meeting in November, you may have noticed that we had 65 “units” participate – some individuals, some couples or families. Amazing attendance for an online event! And it was such a treat to see so many of you that we haven’t seen in far too long! We hope to see even more of you at the Annual Meeting on January 31.

Lunch Bunch Update The Tuesday Lunch Bunch is waiting to
resume the monthly luncheons until it is safe for the group to gather in person. This group normally meets monthly at various local restaurants for food and fellowship. If you have
any questions, please call Rose Ann Sprang at 831-6486.
We’re looking forward to seeing you again and wish you a happy new year!
Let’s Keep Talking About Race Maybe you find yourself exhausted by these
ongoing conversations, and I get it, I do! But how are we to bring about change if we just say ‘I’ve done enough, I don’t need to do more”? This very thought has crossed my mind from time to time. Last month when I was looking for a storybook to be part of the upcoming Dreaming of a New Now MLK jr, when I came across the book Equality’s Call. The book has a recurring refrain that has stuck with me weeks later, “A right isn’t right, until it’s granted to all.” So, the conversations can’t end. They must continue until we’ve achieved equality for all! Won't you join us in growing your knowledge and understanding? This month we will look at implicit bias and how it affects our actions and words.
Watch these two videos at your own leisure, and then join us on January 27 at 6:30 pm in the Google Meet.
How Racial Bias Works--And How To Disrupt It (a 14 minutes TED Talk) and Prejudiced thoughts run through all our minds--the key is what we do with them. (a short article and 20 minute TED Talk)
These conversations are hard, but we can’t do better until we know better. So let’s talk on January 27 at 6:30 pm. Join the video meeting: Race

Mind/Body/Spirit This mindfulness group meets every Thursday. Throughout November we will be reading and discussing Eckhardt Tolle's book The Power of Now. I like this summary of the book: Eckhart Tolle explores presence, thinking, and spirituality to help you understand what presence means, how thinking and non-acceptance drive a lot of human pain, and how to live a life that reduces suffering. Also, each week we begin with a check-in about the events of each other's lives, and how we're working and living during a pandemic. Everyone is welcome, even if you haven't been reading the book. Please join us! Contact Brian for more information.
Join the Zoom video meeting: Mindfulness
Coffee and Conversation meets at 8:00am on the first and third Wednesdays. In November, we’ll begin reading Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents, by Isabel Wilkerson. The church will not be ordering books to distribute, so each participant is responsible for ordering their own print or digital copy. C&C Reading Schedule: Jan 6 - Part Five (Chapters 19-24): The Consequence of Caste
Jan 20 - Parts Six and Seven (Chapters 25-Epilogue): Backlash and Awakening
Yoga: Jane Mirshak is offering Breath, Movement and Shakti Naam Yoga Classes online! For more information feel free to reach out to Jane directly by email or 917-670-6794.
Tuesday Night Fellowship meets online on Tuesday evenings, beginning at 6:30pm. Until the group chooses another line of study, we are watching online videos from the Living the Questions series “Dream, Think, Be, Do” and sharing in conversation. Participants are encouraged to select a video and lead discussion. Links to the videos will be shared in the e-newsletters. Learn more.
