How is th programm aliata rcogis?

The programme is validated and quality

be an increased number o competitive

    applications rom non-UK graduates.

    Successul completion o the Foundation

    competently and proessionally in a

    patient-centred, multi-proessional

environment, and to equip you or

    a career o lie-long learning and

    proessional development.

By using a Problem Based Learning

    (PBL) curriculum, the programme

    expertly incorporates virtual patients and

virtual clinics into the learning process

    to supplement the more experiential,

    hands-on clinical practice.

In particular the course provides a

    strong emphasis on proessional and

    clinical practice with guided support

    towards the United States Medical

    Licensing Examination (USMLE).

The rst two years o the programme

are spent at SGUL, comprising clinical

science in year one and transitionalclinical practice in year two. There will

be 18 weeks o clinical attachments

    during the transitional clinical practice

year in hospitals and general practices

in London and the surrounding areas.

These give students a rm grounding

or urther clinical rotations in the US or

other international clinical sites, and will

also allow students to have an insight

into the National Health Service (NHS),

one o the best healthcare delivery

systems in the world. The nal two years

(three and our) are spent in clinical

practice in the United States and/or

How is th programm aliata rcogis?

The programme is validated and quality

assured by St Georges, University o

    London. Successul completion o the

programme leads to the award o an

MBBS degree rom St Georges Hospital

    Medical School, a constituent college

o the University o London (our ormal

title), allowing or direct progression into

    proessional medical practice.

The clinical years take place in the

United States or other INTO St Georges,

    University o London aliated

    international clinical-training sites and

students are prepared or the USMLE.

At the end o the course you will receive

your MBBS degree, which is a primary

    medical qualication (PMQ). Holding

a PMQ entitles you to provisional

    registration with the General Medical

Council, subject only to its acceptance

that there are no Fitness to Practise

concerns that need consideration. In the

UK provisionally registered doctors canonly practise in approved Foundation

Year 1 posts: the law does not allow

    provisionally registered doctors to

undertake any other type o work.

To obtain a Foundation Year 1 post you

would need to apply during the nal year

    o your undergraduate course through

    the UK Foundation Programme Oce

    selection scheme, which allocates these

posts to graduates on a competitive

basis. So ar, all suitably qualied UK

graduates have ound a place on the

Foundation Year 1 programme, but this

cannot be guaranteed, or instance i

there were to be an increased numbero competitive applications rom

    non-UK graduates.

    Successul completion o the Foundation

Year 1 programme is normally achieved

within 12 months and is marked by the

    award o a Certicate o Experience. You

would then be eligible to apply or ull

    registration with the General Medical

Council. You need ull registration with

a licence to practise or unsupervised

medical practice in the NHS or private

practice in the UK. Although thisinormation is currently correct, students

need to be aware that regulations in this

area may change rom time to time.

While the St Georges MBBS is

    recognised by many dierent countries,

applicants are advised to check with their

own individual national authority i they

aspire to practise in their home country.

    Acamic cott

    The programme is underpinned

    by our themes:

    Basic and Clinical Sciences

    Patient and Doctor

    Community and Population Health

    Personal and Proessional

    Development.

Basic and Clinical Sciences is the

largest theme in terms o its content,

as it incorporates the majority o the

    actual knowledge students require to

qualiy. However, all our themes are

o equal importance in equipping the

student or a proessional lietime as

    a medical practitioner.

    Approachs to larig

    The curriculum adopts a learner-centred

    approach, where the emphasis is

on both learning and teaching. The

overall objective is to increase your

    understanding and your skills. Methods

o learning have been devised to help

you in a structured and eective way,

    including:

    Problm Bas Larig ocusing

on a central case as a starting point

to allow you to understand the relevance

o your learning to your uture clinical

practice as a doctor. Other learning

activities, such as lectures, lab work,

    clinical demonstration, clinical and

    communication skills, medical law

and ethics, are related to the weeks

    central case.

    dirct sl-larig where the

teacher sets objectives but you take

responsibility or deciding how and when

to achieve them, thus ensuring you are

    an active participant.

    Stimulatig teaching methods and

teacher roles are designed to stimulate

inquiry, not be a substitute or it.

    Itgrat giving clinical relevance

to all that you learn, as well as making

the process o learning relevant and

    interesting. This ensures that clinical

skills and practice are underpinned by

a rigorous understanding o the basic

sciences in a way that encourages

    deep learning.

Clar larig objctis to act as

    a means o communication between

    programme organisers, teachers

    and yoursel, and allow co-ordination

    between programme outcome, what is

taught, and the assessment o learning.

    Spiral curriculum designed to help

you revisit, deepen and extend your

    knowledge, skills and understanding.

    Apart rom traditional lecture based

learning, there are also many small

    group sessions such as Problem

    Based Learning and clinical skills.

I particularly like the peer tutoring

    system where upper year students

    will lead teaching sessions such

    as clinical skills and anatomy.

    This oers senior students an

opportunity to reinorce theirlearning and to improve teaching

    and communication skills. As a

    junior student, getting to know

    INTO SGUL has incorporated test

    preparation or the United States

    Medical Licensing Exams (USMLE) and

    residency advising, so that students

will have the support needed to be

successul. The USMLE exams are a

series o exams that are taken by all

students who are looking to become

licensed to practise medicine in the US.

The USMLE exams covered and taken

during the INTO SGUL programme are:

USMLE Step 1, USMLE Step 2 CK and

USMLE Step 2 CS. The Step 1 exam

ocuses on basic sciences and a passing

score on this exam is required in order

to progress on to clinical placements in

the US. To help make sure students are

on track or this exam, we will be utilising

    both o-the-shel and comprehensive

exams rom NBME. Step 2 CK assesses

    a students clinical knowledge and

    Step 2 CS assesses standard-patient

    clinical skills. Most students will

take the Step 2 exams during theirnal year o clinical placements.

The USMLE Step 3 exam is not

included in our curriculum as this

    is a postgraduate clinical skills

    assessment and is generally taken

ater the rst year o postgraduate

    training in a residency programme.

    All international medical graduates

(IMGs) must also be certied by the

    Educational Commission or Foreign

Medical Graduates (ECFMG) in order to

move on in the residency application

    process. ECFMG certication requires

you to have passing test scores on the

USMLE Step 1, Step 2 CK and Step 2

CS exams, and a valid medical degree.

The SGUL MBBS is approved or

    ECFMG certication.

Throughout all years o study, students
