WHO IS MISREPRESENTING?

This morning's Advertiser, refer-

ring to an article in the Bulletin onFriday, says:

"Before condemning strangers, however, for writing sensational re-

ports concerning our domestic affairs,it will be well for the Uullltin tomend its own conduct in niisrepre-scntiii- i!

Ilawaiiuus, as was done in itsissue of June 1, under the heading of'Our Annexation Minister,' where analleged interview was made the basisof censuring the Hawaiian Ministerat Washington lor Heiitiments winchho never uttered, and which aieknown to be contrary to his views onHawaiian politics."

To prove it- - cliaige of ntisrepre--icutatio- n

against this taper, lite Ad-

vertiser quotes from the New YorkShipping and Commercial List an in-

terview with Minister Smith, diffeiingmaterially in sentiments from that inthe Herald quoted by the Bulletinon June llh. Had we come acrossthis interview in the List, nothingwould have given us more pleasurethan to have reproduced it. But, usit happened, several interviews inutlicr papers with the Minister, all ofa uature similarly compromising lothat in the Herald, i cached the Bul-

letin. It was lime to censure theMinister, tin ample period havingelapsed, prior lo the republication ofthe Herald's interview, for the Min-

ister to have acknowledged or deniedthe authenticity of previous inter-

views telegraphed all over the UnitedStates, lo which the Bullktin hadconspicuously drawn attention.

However, the censure in this paperwas made conditional it had a big"ii" in it. The interview was editor-

ially introduced in these words, "Heis reported to Itavo said:' and fol-

lowed by the editorial remark, "Thereis a hope left that to the lively ima-

gination of the correspondent pari atleast of the humiliation may be at-

tributed." To characterize bucli

caicful treatment of the reportedwords of a public man as "inisre-picbcnluliu-

is itself misrepresent-ation of a lather cool and deliberatekind.

Tlicru U one point in tho interviewof .Minister .Smith published In theAd vei titter, in icgaid to wltiuh itwould he a credit to his wisdom if ittune pioved u misrepresentation.

This is where the Minister is reportedto lmvo snid, "The American Con-

gress has a fashion of abrogatingtreaties at its own fico will," andthen in the next breath to have plead-

ed for "a perpetual treaty of freetrade," which "would at once inspireus witli confidence and rest our variousbusiness enterprises on a stablebasis." Where is the perpetuity of

any treaty to come from, which is atthe mercy of a Com;rc33 that "has afashion of abrogating treaties at itsown free will?

When Minister Smith denies theauthenticity of the interview purport-ing to have been given by him to theWashington correspondent of theNew York Herald, it will be timeenough for the Advertiser to talkabout misrepresentation on accountof the republication of that inter-

view.

THE STUDENTS LEAD.

There was a poor attendance atthe baseball game on Saturday between the llawaiis and Ktuneha-meha- s,

which pel haps influenced thegame to a certain degree. The lla-waiis put up poor ball as was ex-

pected, considering that they veryseldom practice. The game ended17 to 2 in favor of the students.

titions from various districts that theduty on rice he retained. Tabledfor consideration with bill.

Kanealii, Kaiinamano and Ed-

monds. All tabled for future consid-eration.

Rep. Knmaitoha presented peti-tions, (1) that licenses he granted toallow the distillation of liquors; (2)to allow the sale of wines and beer.Laid on the table for considerationnith bills.

Tabled. Also, that an appropriation be made for aroad from Hilo through Puna. ToPublic Lands. Also, that the sum of$1500 he appropriated for the im-

By Uep. Bush, from 13 voters ofHonolulu, that a new Constitution begranted. Tabled for bill.

Minister Whiting announced thatthe Report of the Attorney-General- 's

Department was printed in Englishand ready for distribution ; the Ha-

waiian version would he presentedwhen the printing was finished.

Rep. Wilder, from the Committeeon Commerce, presented the follow-

ing report on Bill No. 11, relating totho duties on coffee, viz. :

"Your committee beg leave to re-

port that they have hud under con-

sideration Bill No. 11. This is a billto increase the duties on coffee to 12cents per lb. We do not understandthis to boa bill to increase the revenue, but if passed no doubt it would havethat effect to a small extent. Asthe amount of coffee raised in thisKingdom is not near enough for ourhomo consumption as we find fromthe report of the Collector-Genera- l,

that for the year ending December31, 18U1, there was imported intothis Kingdom 122,710 ills, and3000 lbs. exported. We find thaithe present duty u coffee is (i centsper lb. In the minds of yniir com-

mittee, coffee is not one of the Insurebut one of the most commonarticles of food, used in almost everyfamily.

"We are also aware that the in-

come of every family in this Kingdom has been greatly reduced, owingto the great depression in all kindsof business. And in the minds ofyour committee it would be great in-

justice (more particularly to the poorclasses) to do anything that wouldadd to thu presuut cost of living. Therefore your committee would re-

commend that the further consider-ation ot this bill be indefinitely post-poned." Signed 113-- all the membersof the committee.

There was considerable discussionon a motion to adopt the report ofthe committee. A motion to acceptthe report and place on table for con-sideration with the bill was finallyadopted.

At 12 o'clock the Assembly tookrecess until 1 :30 o'clock.

This event formed a fitting closeto the Anniversary exercises of theHawaiian Evangelical Association, which has been in session the lusttwo weeks. Thu attendance hasbeen very good. It is hard toeradicate inbred notions from awhole peoplu in two geneiations, andthe process is not yet complete. THE EXAMINER Ofl HAWAIIAN was uuablo to trott!ai Ufcs ami iro 'fATrT VArirsrnAFFAIRS. PV- - l" Dolht of authority in IIo- - J UJO-J-

NJN QTnolulu Admirn lrnwn is no morn U-- a

EoiTott liULM.ris:Every now and then some of the

newspapers in the United Stales sendreporters to the Hawaiian islands, presumably for the purpose of keep-ing the American public informed inthe matter of Hawaiian affairs. It isdillleylt to imagine anything morewildly wide of the truth, more in-

sufferably impertinent, than tlio ef-

forts of these knights of the ink-po- t.

In these later limes there appears inthe San Francisco Examiner a lettersigned Fred. M. Soincrs. I have nottthe pleasure of knowing Mr. isomers.'Ii he is as unscrupulous in oiliermailers as he is in tilings Hawaiian,I should think him nn excellent mannot lo know. The unmeasured ef-- f

i outcry of speaking of the Queenand her court as "the dtibky Queenof Hawaii and her opera bouffecourt," Is simply an insult to everycitizen in the country. Who is thismau, Somcrs, that he should freelyaccept tlm hospitalities of Honolulusociety, and thus speak of our insti-tutions? The indelicacy of Ids lan-

guage will surely mark him as un-

worthy of attentions, which, 1 amtold, he is by no means aver.--e to re-

ceive. The portraits of Wilcox andV. V. Ashford are said to be those ofthe leaders of tlio native and foreignrevolutionists. Now, to a residentof Honolulu, such a description issimply ridiculous. Who are the for-

eign revolutionists led by V. V. Ash-

ford? There may possibly be one orIwo of the captains andspectacled loungeis who own alle-

giance to the lately departed colonel, but certainly none other. To readthe article of Fred. M. Somcrs, andto examine the very warlike counter-feit presentiments of these leaders ofmen, one would be disposed to dreamof deeds ot heroism, of lightingagainst oppression, of

" some Village Hampden who withdauntless breast

The petty tyrant of his llelds withstood.'"

The facts of the case, however, arefar different. They remind one ofthe story of the poor little schoolboywho, when asked by the irascibleschoolmaster, "Who signed theMagna Charta?" replied in appeal-ing tone, "Please, sir, it wasn'tme." So with these warlike revo-lutionists. They held meoliijgs atnight. They induced very simple-minde- d

natives to swear that theywould cut each other's throats if llieyever betrayed secrets which theyafterwaids swore never existed;they wore going to seize the Palaceand the Miniiteis and the Judiciary. But when the arrests were made,"Oil, what a difference in the morn-ing!" They literally whined,"Please, sir, it wasn't me." Alltheir courage seemed to have oozedout of their fingers' ends; and whenthe redoubtable V. V. Ashford es-

caped on a technicality of evidence, what did he do? Did lie rally hisscattered forces? Did he face themusic? No, sir. He preferred toslink out, and lie slunk, I supposeon the theory and practice that hethat fights and runs away, lives tofight another day.

Imagine the representative of theExaminer publishing the views ofBush ! Supposing a Hawaiian, wish-

ing to learn American policy, shouldseriously study the views of Dr.O'Donnell in San Francisco, or ofthe Chicago Anarchists! It would beabout as wise. Now, sir, is this arevolution? May thoic men becalled revolutionists? Ought notthey rather to sing

'I'm a villain of the deepest die-T- hat

Is I should like to be "When the arrest of a dozen men, amongst whom there is only one ofany ability at all, can com-

pletely crush ihe actions of a fewweak-minde- d malcontents, is it fairto publish to the world in the col-

umns of the Examiner that we havehad a revolution which badly scaresthe Crown and court of Hawaii.Surely Mr. Somcrs is either a weak-minde- d

man, or an unscrupulouspenny-a-line- r, high priced at thatligurc.

Kvery kind of measure has beenfreely discussed during these timesof monetary depression cheap lab-

or, tariff reform, annexation and newconstitution; but if Mr. Somcrs im-

agines that a vote on these islandswould lie for annexation with theUnited States, lie is unquestionablyin this, as in other matters, lamenta-bly misinformed. According to myestimate ninety-nin- e out of everyhundred would vote the oilier way.Mr. Somers quotes a conversationwith Admiral lkown. The Admiralbluntly refused to discuss the con-troversy between the revolutionistsand the Government. Will MrSomers have the goodness to formu-late his ideas ofgtlmt couliovcrsy?Ileally I, for one, cannot find outwhat the conti ovorsy was, or that thei owas any controversy, unless it aroseout of the disappointment of some ofthe revolutionists in not obtainingolllce, and they accordingly said"Poor natives!" and revolutionized. But all these men arrested swore thatthey weio not i evolutionists, hut thatthey were merely seeking their rightsby constitutional methods. So .Mr.Soincrs would oblige us by a list ofhis revolutionists Admiral Brownis reported to have saitl that he hadtho general permission from the Gov-irnme- nt

to land troops ut any timefor shore drill, and that he should utonce mail hhisclf of this permissionto send u guard to the AmericanMinistry and Consulate, This seemsto me to he a remui liable intention toabuse u fiiendly permission lo laudtioops for drill. Assuming that Mr.Soiiicih is correct in his report, I

cannot help thinking that the admiralwould exceed his right picposleronslyif lie piitftiiiucd to laud Ins troops fornut reiikou hut for drill, unless ut therequest of tlio (ioveruincnt, or un-tu- w

lie yliuiild see Unit the Government

than the Commander of the Fnsann. He did not land troopB in Chile, dur-ing the civil war, he has 'no tight toland them hero. The Government isperfectly able to cope with all suchpetty combinations as llic Ashford-Wilco- x

revolution. The trouble doesnot ariso from such things as thesethings from which no country is fiee. But the real uneasiness for Hawaiicomes from unscrupulous and inso-lent writers like Mr. Somers, whoseonly aim is to make a sensation forothers and a living for themselves.
