CUNEIFORM Sumerians were the first people

to develop a system of writing. This is called cuneiform. The symbols represent sounds.

Cuneiform is considered the first alphabet.

Wrote on clay tablets using a pen-shaped tool with a pointed end.

CUNEIFORM Farmers could record which crops

they grew each year. Write down plans for future planting. Merchants were able to keep detailed

record of their trades. Laws could be put in writing and

people in different areas would all know the same rules.

Records could be kept when people did not agree about the law.

As a group, make a new set of notes on the 1X2 card you were given to include only the MOST important notes.

an invitation to send to hunter gatherers in the area, inviting them to settle along the Euphrates River. Include the advantages of settling down and why the Euphrates River would be a desirable place to live.
