Heat and Changes of State
Mr. Perez
Everything made of molecules (or atoms or particles) has heat.
Heat depends on the size AND temperature of an object
Even cold things have heat
Bill Nye Recap
Temperature, thermal energy and heat are all closely related but are NOT the same thing.
Thermal energy- the total energy of all the particles in an object
Heat- is the transfer of thermal energy from a warmer object to a cooler object We measure heat in JOULES
What is heat?
Temperature- average kinetic energy of the particles in an object Measurement of how hot or
cold something is
Temperature
When matter changes from one state of matter to another through a loss or addition of heat, it is called a change of state
Everything is made of matter!
Changes of State
Read p. 47 The three main states of matter
are1. SOLID2. LIQUID3. GAS

Particle spacingPrepare a table like this
Solids have a definite shape and a definite volume
Particles in a solid do not move very fast and are very close together; they vibrate in place
A solid that absorbs heat will cause it to melt
A solid that absorbs an extreme amount of heat will cause it to sublimate
Solids
Liquids do not have a definite shape, but do have a definite volume
Particles in a liquid are further apart than a solid and move a lot quicker
A liquid that absorbs heat will cause it to vaporize (evaporate)
A liquid that releases heat will cause it to freeze (solidify)
Liquids
Gases have no definite shape or volume
The particles in a gas are very far apart and move very quickly
A gas that releases heat will cause it to condensate
A gas that releases and extreme amount of heat will cause it to go through depositionGases
