FOREWORDIn this twenty-third volume of the

Tecoan we present to you a pictorial

year of life at East Carolina Teachers

College. We have tried to make it repre-

sentative. Our college days will soon be

gone and we will join that group of

people called the "Alumni of E. C.

T. C." It is our hope that in years to

come this book will afford some joy

by recalling to you old acquaintances

and experiences, and if, by chance, you

gain some inspiration from these pages,

our work shall not have been in vain.

This is your Yearbook, and it is

through your cooperation that the 1945

Tecoan has been published. We hope

you like it.

DEDICATIONTo Dr. Paul A. Toll, in recognition of his great service ren-

dered to East Carolina Teachers College, we dedicate the nine-

teen hundred forty-five Tecoan. During the nine years that

Dr. Toll has been a professor at this institution, students have

learned to know and love him as a teacher, adviser, and friend.

So it is with the greatest respect and utmost esteem that we

dedicate this book to him.

Ailing Presidcii

The President

Dear Seniors:

We have been delighted to have you as citizens on the campus at East CaroHna

Teachers College during the past four years. Your Alma Mater and the State of North

Carolina will profit by your having been here. Commencement day will conclude, for some

of you, your college experience with its pleasant associations. Its opportunities for the

acquisition of knowledge and the development of personal skills, habits and attitudes

under faculty guidance become for you now a pleasant memory. I hope the experience

has been all and more than you expected when you came as a Freshman ; that it has

contributed abundantly to the enrichment of your personalities; that you may reap the

fruits of this experience during each succeeding year of your lives; and that you may be

able and willing to share these fruits to enrich the lives of others who have been less

fortunate. May your influence, skill and talents be given generously to help lift a stricken

world from its present unfortunate plight into the light of a better day.

HowardJ.

McGinnis, Acting President.

Administration

The college cannot guarantee success to every student who enters

its doors. All it guarantees is opportunity, guidance, companionship and

good will. I trust you have made use of the opportunities offered, and

that you have gained much from your stay at East Carolina Teachers

College.

Annie L. Morton.

To YOU TO WHOM commencement this year will mean most—congratu-

lations. May it be a commencement in the truest sense of the word, and

may your four years at East Carolina Teachers College have greatly

increased within you higher ideals, higher morals, and a keener desire

with a stronger determination to do your utmost to make this unsettled

world a happier place in which to live. May your lives be challenges

to all who follow you here.

SENIOR CLASSWe are the second War Class. When we enrolled as Freshmen in

the fall of 1941, there were three hundred and one girls and thirty-

seven boys. In the fall of 1944, the Senior class enrollment numbered

one hundred and fifty-four girls and three boys. Although the war has

kept us from being a normal class, there has been no lack of school

spirit or cooperation. Instead, our class has always shown a spirit of

cooperation and leadership comparable to that of any other group of

students on our campus.

Muriel Whitehurst, Vice-President

Page 29: digital.lib.ecu.edu · HEARMEDFORCES DavidOwens AlvahPage DorothyW.Parks EdwardG.Patrick G.A.Patterson AltonPayne FrancisD.Peel GilbertPeel,Jr. ThomasPerkins DonaldL Jeans Do: Lewil

For four years we have worked together—hard, faithfully, and patiently. It was with the help

and guidance of our competent advisers, Miss Pearl Chapman and Dr. M. N. Posey, that we have

successfully sponsored five dances and our Senior play. We have been a busy class—a class that

has striven to uphold the high standards set by the classes which preceded us.

To those of us who were called upon to serve our country in war, we wish a safe return.

Though you could not graduate with us we feel that you are with us still—members of a class

that will do its best to carry on in the free and peaceful nation you are so bravely trying to preserve.

Our Junior Class of 1944-45 boasts one hundred and seventy-five members, ten of whom are

boys.

A number of the Junior Class members have contributed to the war effort by roUing band-

ages, buying war bonds, and participating in such drives as those for the World Student Service

Fund and the Red Cross.

The Juniors claim a large percentage not only of the members but also of the officers of

clubs and organizations on the campus.

The class entertained the Freshmen at a dance during the winter quarter and will sponsor

the Junior-Senior dance in early spring.

SOPHOMOREThe Sophomore Class of East Carolina Teachers College is now two

years old. During its Freshman year the class sponsored the Freshman-

Junior Dance and several parties and took an active part in many stu-

dent affairs.

At the beginning of the new school year, 1944-45, the Sopho-

more Class had several new members and a new group of officers. The

faculty advisers are Dr. R.J.

Slay and Dr. Karl V. Gilbert.

The Sophomore-Senior D.mce, given on December 9, 1944, by the Sophomore Class in honor

of the Senior Class, was a gala affair with Wintertime as the theme. This and other activities of

the class will long be remembered, and each one will be proud to say, "I was a member of the

Sophomore Class of East Carolina Teachers College in the year 1944-45."

This Sophomore Class will be remembered for many things, but its outstanding virtue is the

ability to work together in any undertaking, no matter how large or small the task may be.

From this virtue has come the success of the Sophomore Class, and with this year of success

behind us we look forward to our Junior year of working and succeeding together.

FRESHMANOne year of college life gone by—and what a year this has

been.

It all began for us last fall with a week of orientation—

a

week of seeing new faces and finding our way around in a new

place, a week of rushing from meeting to meeting, a week of

meeting new people who have become our friends and class-

mates.

It wasn't long before we found out what the required courses

were and what Registration Day meant. We learned about

dormitory meetings, mass meetings, council meetings, club meetings, and meet-

ings of all icinds. We attended handbook classes every night for a week and

then took a test on all the rules and regulations. Then came Rush Week with

all of its crazy initiations, but we lived through that, too.

Classes started and we worked very enthusiastically. After the first week or

two, we felt like veterans going from class to class. We were no longer home-

sick and we were learning to love college life.

During the year we elected our class officers; we sponsored a dance honor-

ing the Juniors; we joined the different organizations, we participated in school

activities and took part in the athletic programs; and we did our school work in

a very commendable manner.

Now that we have successfully completed our Freshman year, we are ready

to venture into the second year of our college life.

Student Cooperative Council

Thk Student Cooperative Council of 1944-45 has endeavored to

serve the student body of East Carolina Teachers College in a diligent

democratic manner as the legislative branch of the Student Cooperative

Government Association. These efforts have not always resulted in

effective government, but perhaps they have advanced a little further

the principles of democratic intelligent self-government.

Amanda EtheridgePresident of Student Cooperat

Government Association

Women's Judiciary

The Women's Judiciary of East Carolina Teachers College is com-

posed of nine members elected by the student body. The function of

this body is to handle all disciplinary cases of women students. In an

effort to maintain high standards of conduct on our campus, the judiciary

meets ever)' week to discuss problems of major and minor importance.

This year's work has been very successful.

Marjorie PrivottCkurmMi of Women s Judiciary

Chairman of Aien's Judiciary

Men's Judiciary

The purpose of the Men's Judiciary is to act as a judicial body in

all matters concerning discipline of men students. Because of the war

and the present national emergency only a small number of men students

enrolled for 1944-45; therefore the activities of the judiciary were

greatly reduced.

Young Women's Christian Association

The Young Women's Christian Association was organized

on the campus in 1909. With a present membership of approxi-

mately three hundred, it continues to be the largest organization

on the campus. The Friday and Sunday night vesper services

provide opportunities for the students to use their talents crea-

tively. The Y. W. C. A. and Y. M. C. A. have cooperated in

sponsoring Religious Emphasis Week and the World Student

Service Fund, as well as in bringing noted lecturers, travelers,

and other speakers to the campus.

Young Men's Christian Association

In spite of the small number of men students on the cam-

pus this year the Y. M. C. A. has had a very successful year.

Approximately ninety-five per cent of the dormitory students

joined the "Y" this year.

Working with the Y. W. C. A., the "Y" has constantly

tried to keep religious activities before all the students. Dur-

ing the fall, the two organizations sponsored the World Student

Service Fund drive and Religious Emphasis Week. At intervals

throughout the entire year, the two "Y's" brought to the cam-

pus outstanding religious speakers, including Dr. Sherwood

Eddy, lecturer and author.

As a part of the year's activities, the Young Men's Chris-

tian Association mailed Christmas cards to former East Carolina

Teachers College students who are now in service. The "Y"

also sponsored devotionals in the boy's dormitory for the bene-

fit of the dormitory students. In December the "Y" in co-

operation with the Counselor to Men gave a buffet supper for

all men students.

The students majoring in the various courses offered at E. C. T, C. have

organized for their own benefit and enjoyment departmental clubs. The active

clubs are the Commerce Club, English Club, Home Economics Club, Mathe-

matics Club, Science Club, International Relations Club, Association for Child-

hood Education, Future Teachers of America, Jarvis Forensic Club, Alumni

Sons and Daughters, Alpha Alpha Sigma, Phi Sigma Pi, Sigma Pi Alpha,

Pi Omega Pi, and the Chi Pi Players.

The college motto "To Serve" is upheld better no place on the campus

than in the departmental clubs as it is the aim and objective of every organ-

ization to serve our country, our community', our school, and members.

The purpose of the departmental organizations is both educational and

social. The different groups study their particular subjects and related topics.

They gather and disseminate knowledge of the modern movements and trends,

promote the progressive type of education, and attempt to raise the standard

of the professional training for teachers and leaders. The clubs strive to help

its members to become better acquainted with one another by bringing them

together and affording opportunities for closer associations. The best traditions

of the school are supported and intellectual activities are encouraged. Scholar-

ship, citizenship, and desirable character traits are recognized and emphasized.

Cooperation among the students in order to do a definite job is one of the fine

practices of the clubs and each student is given an opportunity to develop

his talents and express himself.

The organizations have a regular time each month for their meetings.

Special meetings and social gatherings are held in addition to the scheduled

ones. The programs are varied and interesting consisting of student, faculty,

and outside speakers, games, debates, and programs for fun.

Each student is encouraged to join the organization of his major subject.

The requirements for membership are stated in the club's constitution which

has been approved by the Student Cooperative Council. The officers and ad-

visers are elected by the members of the club. The president is a member of

the Student Cooperative Council.

The work of the departmental organizations is very profitable to the

school and to each student. The above pictures are of the leaders of the de-

partmental organizations.

Publications BoardThe Publications Board consists of two mem-bers at large from the student body, the editors,

business managers, and faculty advisers of the

three publications on our campus—the Tecoan,

the Teco Echo, and the Pieces O' Eight.

The Board has tried to give the students

an opportunity to express their opinions, has

encouraged creative and imaginative writing,

and has offered journalistic experience to the

interested students. The work of this body is a

tradition which we hope will have an everlast-

ing life at East Carolina Teachers College.

and because of other handicaps, it has been difficult to make every part of this book just

as you might like to have it. We have tried to make the 1945 Tecoan a forerunner for

bigger and better annuals in years to follow, and we hope it is one you can be proud

The business staff is justly proud of the amount of advertising it has obtained this

year, and is grateful to the firms who have helped to make the publication of the 1945

Tecoan a financial success.

We wish to express our appreciation to our advisers, Dr. R. j. Slay and Dr. E. R.

PIECES 0' EIGHTThe aim of Pieces O' Eight this year has been to make it a magazine

that the students appreciate and enjoy. Contributions have come from

wide and varied sources and by working together, we have given and

gained new ideas. The magazine has tried to provide an escape from

the war by humorous and witty features, but also, to broaden and en-

lighten the mind with more serious and informative subjects. P/eiei

O' Eight belongs to the students and we have endeavored to help the

students realize this by participation and interest.

through programs based on some study of selected

Wherever possible we have helped to entertain

the artists and service men who have been guests of

the college; we have helped in Red Cross work and

war fund drives; we held our yearly dance in the

spring; and we, in cooperation with the two other

literary societies, had a very impressive May Day Pro-

LANIER SOCIETYDuring the school ^'har of 1944-45, the Sidnc-y Lanier

Society has sought through its regular programs to instill

within the minds and hearts of its members a deeper ap-

preciation for Lanier, that great Southern poet. In addition

to these programs, the two activities in which one hundred

Laniers have been most interested are the fall dance with a

Christmas theme which our society sponsored and the May

Day Program on which we worked in cooperation with

the other societies.

The Laniers have had a happy and profitable time to-

gether, and they expect next year to be even better.
