MCL in injured by a force applied to the outer aspect of the knee joint, that tends to wedge open the knee joint on the inside, with the foot firmly planted on the ground.

무릎관절의 운동 At the beginning of flexion (bending), the femur rotates laterally a tiny bit which relaxes the tension in the collateral ligaments. This allows flexion to occur. During flexion, the menisci (espe-cially the lateral meniscus) are pulled to the back of the knee. At maximum flexion, the PCL is pulled tight, preventing the femur from sliding forward on the tibia. As the knee extends (straightens), the condyles of the femur roll on the tibial condyles like a rocking chair. Near the end of exten-sion, the medial femoral condyle slides backward a bit, the ACL is pulled tight preventing further sliding, and the femur rotates slightly to the inside, tightening the collateral ligaments.
